Chapter 14: The Final Confession

Nobody believed what they were hearing.

Not even my father.

“You’re dead.””

My grandfather laughed quietly through the phone.

“People believe what they are told.””

My father grabbed the phone from my hand.

“Where are you?””

“Still trying to control everything, Adrian?””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“You destroyed this family.””

My grandfather laughed.

“No.””

A pause.

“You destroyed this family when you chose strangers over your own blood.””

My father’s face turned red.

“You manipulated everyone.””

“I protected what was mine.””

Lucian stepped closer.

“Your company?””

“My family’s company.””

Lucian laughed bitterly.

“You never built it.””

My grandfather ignored him.

“You were all so focused on money and reputation that you missed the truth.””

My father tightened his grip.

“What did you do to my wife?””

Silence.

A long silence.

Then:

“I didn’t kill her.””

Nobody breathed.

“But you know what happened.””

“Yes.””

My father’s voice became quieter.

“Tell me.””

My grandfather sighed.

“She came to me.””

My stomach tightened.

“She wanted to expose everything.””

“Yes.””

“What did you do?””

“I tried to convince her.””

“Convince her to stay silent?””

“Yes.””

The honesty was terrifying.

“And when she refused?””

Silence.

Then:

“She left.””

My father’s eyes narrowed.

“She disappeared.””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

My grandfather didn’t answer.

That was enough.

My father’s hand trembled.

“You know.””

“I know everything.””

I stepped forward.

“Why did you call me?””

The voice became softer.

“Because your mother wanted you to know.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She knew you would discover this one day.””

My grandfather continued.

“She knew Adrian would protect you with lies.””

My father looked hurt.

But he didn’t deny it.

“She left the evidence for you.””

I looked at the flash drive.

“Why?””

“Because you were the only person she trusted.””

The call ended.

Just like that.

Everyone stood frozen.

Then my father spoke.

“We need to find him.””

Carolina shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

“What?””

“He wants you to find him.””

A chill went through me.

“Why?””

“Because this was never about hiding.””

Carolina looked at the flash drive.

“This was about controlling when the truth came out.””

We returned to my father’s house.

The flash drive contained one video.

My mother appeared on the screen.

Older.

Tired.

But smiling.

My entire body froze.

“Valeria.””

Her voice.

After all these years.

“I don’t know when you’ll see this.””

My father sat beside me.

Unable to move.

“If you are watching this, it means the truth finally reached you.””

My mother looked directly into the camera.

“Your grandfather made terrible choices.””

She paused.

“But your father made a different mistake.””

My father lowered his eyes.

“He believed protecting you meant keeping you away from pain.””

I felt tears forming.

“That was never what I wanted.””

The video continued.

“I wanted you to grow up knowing the truth, even if it hurt.””

My mother smiled sadly.

“Because truth hurts once.””

A pause.

“Lies hurt every day.””

Nobody spoke.

Then she said:

“There is one final thing you need to know.””

My heart stopped.

“Your grandfather did not act alone.””

The room went silent.

My father looked up.

The video continued.

“He had someone inside the family helping him.””

I looked at Gabriel.

Lucian.

Carolina.

Everyone.

My mother’s voice became quieter.

“And that person is still alive.””

The video ended.

A final message appeared on the screen.

One name.

Not Marco.

Not Carolina.

Not Lucian.

A name none of us expected.

*Adrian Moretti.*

My father stared at the screen.

“No.””

I looked at him.

My entire world shattered.

“Dad…”

He looked at me.

And for the first time…

I saw fear.

May you like

Not because he was accused.

Because he knew something I didn’t.
