Chapter 4: The Man From the Past
The man who walked through the dealership doors looked like someone who had never been afraid of consequences.
He wore a dark gray coat, expensive shoes, and a calm expression that made the entire room feel colder.
My father stopped breathing for a second.
Not because he was scared.
Because he recognized him.
“Lucian.””
The name left my father’s mouth like a warning.
The man smiled.
“Adrian.””
Nobody moved.
Even Carolina looked confused.
She had clearly expected someone powerful.
But she had not expected someone who could make my father look genuinely shocked.
Lucian slowly walked across the showroom, his eyes moving over the luxury cars, the employees, and finally me.
“So this is where you’ve been hiding your daughter.””
I immediately disliked the way he said it.
Not because of the words.
Because of the ownership behind them.
My father stepped in front of me.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
Lucian laughed softly.
“Still protective after all these years.””
“Leave.””
“Before we talk?””
“There is nothing to talk about.””
Lucian stopped.
“Really?””
He looked around.
“Because from what I see, there is a lot to discuss.””
Carolina looked between them.
“Mr. Moretti, who is this?””
My father didn’t answer.
Lucian did.
“I’m someone who helped build this company.””
The employees exchanged confused looks.
My father’s expression hardened.
“You helped build nothing.””
Lucian’s smile faded slightly.
“That’s not what the documents say.””
My stomach tightened.
Documents.
That word had already appeared twice today.
“What documents?”” I asked.
My father looked at me.
“Valeria.””
His voice was gentle.
But I knew he was trying to protect me from something.
Lucian noticed.
And smiled.
“That’s the problem with Adrian. He always thinks hiding things is the same as protecting people.””
My father’s eyes narrowed.
“Be careful.””
“Or what?””
The room became silent.
Lucian stepped closer.
“Are you going to remove me like you removed me ten years ago?””
Nobody understood.
But my father did.
And I could see it in his face.
This was not a business disagreement.
This was personal.
“Daniel,” my father said quietly, “take everyone to the back office.””
The employees hesitated.
“Now.””
They obeyed.
Within seconds, only four people remained in the showroom.
Me.
My father.
Carolina.
And Lucian.
I looked at my father.
“You never told me about him.””
“I never wanted you involved.””
“That’s not an answer.””
Lucian smiled.
“She’s smarter than you think.””
My father ignored him.
“Valeria, trust me.””
“I do.””
I looked at Lucian.
“But I also know when someone is hiding something.””
For the first time, my father looked hurt.
Not angry.
Hurt.
And that made me realize this secret was bigger than I thought.
Lucian walked toward one of the cars on display.
“You know what’s funny?””
Nobody responded.
“Everyone thinks Adrian Moretti built this empire alone.””
He touched the hood of the vehicle.
“But before the world knew his name, there were two people.””
My father’s voice became colder.
“Stop.””
“Adrian and Lucian.””
I looked at my father.
“You worked together?””
My father said nothing.
Lucian answered for him.
“We were partners.””
“Were?””
“Yes.””
He turned.
“Until Adrian decided one person deserved all the credit.””
“That’s a lie,” my father said.
“Is it?””
Lucian pulled a folder from his briefcase.
He placed it on the nearest table.
“Maybe we should let the documents speak.””
My father didn’t move.
“Where did you get those?””
Lucian smiled.
“From where all truths eventually come from.””
He tapped the folder.
“Records.””
I walked closer.
My father immediately said:
“Valeria, don’t.””
But I did.
Because I was tired of being protected from reality.
I opened the folder.
The first page showed old company records.
Partnership agreements.
Ownership percentages.
My eyes moved quickly.
And then I saw something.
A signature.
My father’s.
But next to it was something I had never seen before.
A second agreement.
One that transferred control of a major company division.
To Lucian.
I looked up.
“Dad?””
His expression changed.
“Those documents are incomplete.””
Lucian laughed.
“Of course you’d say that.””
My father grabbed the folder.
“You have no idea what you’re looking at.””
“Then explain it.””
He went silent.
That silence scared me more than any answer.
Because my father always had an answer.
Always.
Lucian watched carefully.
“You never told her.””
My father looked away.
“Told me what?””
Lucian stepped forward.
“That your father didn’t just lose a partner.””
My heart started beating faster.
“What does that mean?””
Lucian looked directly at me.
“It means someone destroyed my life to protect this company.””
My father’s voice turned sharp.
“Enough.””
“No.””
Lucian smiled.
“Not this time.””
He pointed at the folder.
“The truth is finally coming out.””
Then he looked at Carolina.
“And you.””
Carolina froze.
“What?””
“You thought you were protecting luxury cars.””
She said nothing.
“But you were protecting a company built on a secret.””
The words hung in the air.
I looked at my father.
May you like
And for the first time in my life…
I wondered if the person I trusted most had been hiding something from me.
