Chapter 7: The Reason He Returned

I stared at the note at the bottom of the document.

The letters blurred for a moment.

Not because I couldn’t read them.

Because I didn’t want to.

Sometimes the truth is frightening before you even know what it says.

David gently took the paper and looked closer.

His face became serious.

“Emma…”

“What?””

He hesitated.

That hesitation scared me more than anything.

“Read it.””

I looked down.

The note was short.

Only one sentence.

“Contact daughter after learning about inheritance.””

My stomach dropped.

I looked at Michael.

“What inheritance?””

He didn’t answer.

The silence was enough.

“Michael.””

He rubbed his forehead.

“I didn’t know how to explain.””

“Explain what?””

He looked around the parking lot.

At the church.

At the reception hall.

At the people celebrating inside.

Then he lowered his voice.

“Your grandfather left something for you.””

I froze.

“My grandfather?””

“My father.””

I stared at him.

The man I had never met.

The man whose name barely existed in my childhood.

“He left me something?””

Michael nodded.

“When he passed away, there was a trust.””

“A trust?””

“Yes.””

“And you knew about this?””

Michael looked away.

“I found out recently.””

The anger I felt was different this time.

It wasn’t the anger of a daughter who felt abandoned.

It was the anger of someone who finally understood the pattern.

“You found out I had money.””

“That’s not what happened.””

“Isn’t it?””

Michael stepped forward.

“Emma, I came because I wanted a relationship with you.””

“Then why did you bring a bill?””

He had no answer.

David stood quietly beside me.

As always.

Not interrupting.

Not controlling.

Just there.

Michael noticed him.

“You think you’re better than me?””

David shook his head.

“No.””

“Everyone thinks you’re the good guy.””

David’s expression didn’t change.

“I never asked anyone to think that.””

“Then why are you still here?””

David looked at me.

The answer was simple.

“Because Emma asked me to stay.””

Michael went silent.

That one sentence said everything.

I folded the document.

“Is that why you came back?””

Michael looked at me.

“I told you. I wanted to fix things.””

“Answer the question.””

His jaw tightened.

Then he finally said:

“At first…”

I waited.

“At first, I wanted to know about the inheritance.””

The honesty hurt.

Even though I had expected it.

He continued quickly.

“But then I met you.””

I looked away.

“Don’t.””

“What?””

“Don’t tell me meeting me changed everything.””

His face fell.

“Why?””

“Because I spent my whole life hoping you would come back because you missed me.””

I pointed at the document.

“But you came back because someone told you I had something.””

Michael looked devastated.

“I’m not proud of that.””

“No.””

My voice became quieter.

“You’re not.””

A long silence followed.

Then David spoke.

“Emma.””

I turned.

“You don’t have to decide anything tonight.””

I looked at him.

“Why are you still protecting me?””

A small smile appeared.

“Because that’s what I do.””

That broke me.

Because he didn’t say it like he was sacrificing.

He said it like it was obvious.

Like loving me was the easiest thing in the world.

I looked back at Michael.

“What did you expect when you came here?””

He swallowed.

“I don’t know.””

“That’s the problem.””

He looked down.

“I thought maybe…”

He stopped.

“Maybe what?””

“Maybe you would need me.””

The words were quiet.

Almost childlike.

And for one second, I saw something different.

Not the man who disappointed me.

A scared person who realized he missed his chance.

But regret was not the same as being a father.

I turned away.

“I need time.””

Michael nodded.

“I understand.””

Did he?

I didn’t know.

But for the first time, I didn’t feel responsible for making him feel better.

I walked back into the reception hall with David beside me.

The box was still in his hands.

The envelope was still in mine.

Two objects.

Two stories.

One showed me what someone wanted from me.

The other showed me what someone had given.

Then my mother appeared near the entrance.

Her face was pale.

She looked at the papers in my hand.

Then at David.

And immediately, she knew.

“You found out.””

I stared at her.

“You knew?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

“Everyone knew except me?””

She shook her head.

“No, Emma.””

She reached for my hand.

“There’s something else you need to know.””

I pulled back.

“What else could there possibly be?””

My mother looked toward David.

Then whispered:

“David almost left your life once.””

I froze.

“What?””

May you like

She took a shaky breath.

“And I was the reason.””
