Chapter 12: The Family I Never Knew Existed

I couldn’t speak.

The reception hall suddenly felt miles away.

The music.

The laughter.

The guests.

Everything disappeared.

There was only the voice on the phone.

“My half-sister?””

The woman took a breath.

“Yes.””

I looked at David.

He immediately noticed something was wrong.

“Emma?””

I covered the phone.

“I’ll explain later.””

Then I walked farther away.

“How do you know who I am?””

The woman hesitated.

“Because I’ve known about you for years.””

My chest tightened.

“Years?””

“Yes.””

“Then why are you calling now?””

A long silence.

Then:

“Because I found something.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What?””

“Something my father left behind.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Another secret.

Another thing Michael never told me.

“What did he leave?””

“A letter.””

My heart sank.

“Another letter?””

“Yes.””

She sounded nervous.

“It was addressed to you.””

I looked at David.

His face was serious.

“Why would your father leave me a letter?””

The woman answered quietly:

“Because he was afraid you would find out the truth from someone else.””

I felt a chill.

“What truth?””

The woman took a breath.

“My father had another family before he came back into your life.””

I froze.

I already knew I had a half-sister.

But hearing it was different.

“Did Michael know you contacted me?””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because he doesn’t know I found the letter.””

I looked back toward the reception.

Through the glass doors, I saw Michael standing alone.

The man who had returned claiming he wanted to rebuild our relationship.

The man who had never mentioned another daughter.

“How old are you?”” I asked.

“Twenty-four.””

I closed my eyes.

Twenty-four.

Almost my age.

“How long have you known about me?””

“Since I was seventeen.””

My heart dropped.

“Seven years?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

She became quiet.

Then said:

“Because my father didn’t want you to know.””

I felt something inside me break.

Again.

Another person had made a decision about my life without asking me.

“Rachel…”

“Yes?””

“Why are you telling me now?””

Her voice softened.

“Because I read the letter.””

“And?””

“It said something I couldn’t ignore.””

“What?””

She whispered:

“My father knew he failed you.””

I looked down.

“He admitted that?””

“Yes.””

A strange feeling passed through me.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

Something else.

A need to understand.

“Can I see the letter?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Tomorrow.””

I nodded.

Then she added:

“There’s something else.””

“What?””

“The letter mentioned David.””

My entire body went still.

“David?””

“Yes.””

“How does my father know David?””

The woman hesitated.

“He wrote that David was the reason he knew what a real father looked like.””

I looked at David.

The man standing quietly nearby.

The man who never demanded to be chosen.

“Rachel…”

“Yes?””

“What exactly did the letter say?””

Her voice became barely a whisper.

“It said…”

A pause.

“That Michael didn’t leave because he was scared.””

I held my breath.

“Then why?””

The answer came slowly.

“He left because someone offered him money to disappear.””

My blood ran cold.

Someone offered him money?

I looked through the glass doors at Michael.

And for the first time…

I wondered if the story I knew wasn’t just incomplete.

Maybe it was completely different.

The call ended.

I stood there frozen.

David approached carefully.

“Emma?””

I looked at him.

“Someone paid Michael to leave.””

His expression changed.

“What?””

I handed him my phone.

He listened to the silence after the call.

Then he looked toward Michael.

And for the first time that night…

David looked angry.

Not for himself.

For me.

Because if Rachel was telling the truth…

then my entire childhood had been built on a lie.

May you like

And somewhere in the past…

someone had decided I was better off without my own father.
