Chapter 6: The Truth He Wanted To Hide
I didn’t take the envelope.
Not immediately.
After everything that happened, I was afraid of paper.
A piece of paper had changed my entire understanding of my life.
The first envelope showed me what Michael wanted.
The second one threatened to show me what he had hidden.
“What is it?”” I asked.
Michael held it tightly.
“Proof.””
“Proof of what?””
He looked at David.
“I think you should hear this from me.””
David’s expression remained calm.
“Then tell her.””
Michael hesitated.
That hesitation told me more than his words.
A person with the truth doesn’t need time to prepare.
They just speak.
“I was young,” Michael said.
I almost laughed.
Because that was the same excuse he had given me months ago.
“I know.””
“No, Emma. You don’t.””
His voice became defensive.
“I was twenty-one. I had no money. No support. I was scared.””
I nodded.
“Okay.””
He looked surprised.
“Okay?””
“Yes. I understand being scared.””
“Then you understand why I left.””
I looked at him.
“No.””
His face fell.
“I understand fear.””
I glanced at David.
“But I don’t understand leaving.””
Silence.
Michael looked away.
“I made mistakes.””
“Twenty-six years of mistakes?””
He flinched.
“That’s not fair.””
“No?””
My voice shook.
“Because I remember every birthday you missed. Every school event you weren’t at. Every time I wondered why other kids had fathers who showed up.””
Michael lowered his eyes.
“I thought your mother hated me.””
David finally spoke.
“She didn’t.””
Michael looked at him.
“You don’t know that.””
“I do.””
“How?””
David’s voice stayed quiet.
“Because I was there when she waited for your calls.””
Michael froze.
I looked between them.
“What?””
David continued.
“She defended you for years.””
Michael said nothing.
“She told Emma you were trying.””
My chest tightened.
My mother had protected him too.
“Why?””
Michael looked broken for a second.
Then his expression changed.
“I had problems.””
“What kind?””
He looked at the envelope.
“Things I couldn’t fix.””
I stepped closer.
“Then why come back now?””
He looked at me.
And that was the question he didn’t want.
The question that mattered.
“Why now, Michael?””
His silence filled the space.
David didn’t say anything.
He didn’t need to.
Finally, Michael answered.
“Because I found out you were getting married.””
I waited.
“And?””
He swallowed.
“I realized I was about to miss another important moment.””
I looked at him.
“So you came because you didn’t want to miss the wedding.””
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
“But not because you wanted to know me?””
Michael opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
The truth hurt more than any lie.
Then he looked at the envelope.
“I wanted to make things right.””
“By charging me?””
His face turned red.
“I didn’t mean it like that.””
“But you did.””
He looked away.
The reception music continued behind us.
A celebration.
A family gathering.
But I suddenly understood something.
Families weren’t created by moments.
They were created by thousands of ordinary days.
The days nobody filmed.
The days nobody applauded.
The days when someone stayed.
Michael slowly handed me the envelope.
“Read it.””
I looked at David.
He didn’t tell me what to do.
He never did.
I opened it.
Inside was a document.
At the top was a date.
The date I was born.
Below it was a signature.
Michael’s signature.
And another name beside it.
My mother’s.
But what shocked me wasn’t the signature.
It was the sentence written underneath.
A sentence I had never seen before.
“I voluntarily gave up my parental rights so another man could raise my daughter.””
My hands went cold.
I looked up at Michael.
“You signed this?””
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
His voice was barely a whisper.
“Because back then…”
He looked at David.
“…I knew I wasn’t the father she needed.””
The answer should have satisfied me.
But something felt wrong.
Because if Michael knew that…
why did he come back now demanding to be called my father?
And then David noticed something I didn’t.
A small line at the bottom of the document.
His face changed.
“Emma…”
I looked at him.
“What?””
David pointed.
“There’s another date.””
I leaned closer.
My heart stopped.
Because the date was only six months ago.
The day Michael first contacted me.

And beside it was a note.
A note that explained why he really came back.
