Chapter 13: The Truth Behind The Disappearance

I didn’t sleep that night.

The wedding ended hours ago, but I was still sitting in the hotel room, surrounded by things that were supposed to represent happiness.

My wedding dress hung near the window.

Flowers from the ceremony sat on the table.

The rings were beside the bed.

Everything looked perfect.

Except my life no longer felt simple.

David sat in the chair across from me.

He had stayed.

Of course he had.

He didn’t ask if he could.

He didn’t make a dramatic promise.

He simply stayed.

The way he always did.

“Are you sure you want to know everything?”” he asked quietly.

I looked at him.

“No.””

His eyebrows lifted slightly.

“But I need to.””

He nodded.

That was David.

He never pretended hard truths were easy.

He just believed I was strong enough to face them.

Rachel had sent me the photo of the letter.

The first page.

Enough to prove she wasn’t lying.

But not enough to answer everything.

The letter was written by a man named Thomas Hayes.

Michael’s father.

My grandfather.

The same man who created the trust.

The same man who had watched David raise me from a distance.

I opened the message again.

The first line still hurt.

“Michael did not leave because he had no choice.””

I looked at David.

“Did you know?””

He was silent.

That silence answered me.

“You knew something.””

He rubbed his hands together.

“I suspected.””

“Suspected?””

He nodded.

“Your grandfather told me there were things about Michael’s departure that didn’t make sense.””

“What things?””

David looked down.

“Michael disappeared too quickly.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“Your father was struggling. That part was true.””

David paused.

“But people who are afraid usually leave slowly.””

I listened.

“They hesitate. They call. They check in.””

His voice softened.

“Michael vanished.””

I thought about my childhood.

The unanswered questions.

The empty spaces.

The birthdays where I looked toward the door.

“He never called.””

David shook his head.

“No.””

“Why didn’t anyone investigate?””

My mother answered from the doorway.

I turned.

I didn’t even hear her enter.

“Because we were trying to survive.””

She stepped inside.

Her face looked older than yesterday.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

“I was raising a child. I was working. I was exhausted.””

She sat beside me.

“And when someone leaves, sometimes you spend years trying to understand why instead of asking who wanted it to happen.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

She looked at David.

Then away.

“We don’t know.””

I hated that answer.

Not because it was wrong.

Because it meant there were still missing pieces.

Then David pulled something from the wooden box.

Another document.

“You never showed me this.””

He shook his head.

“Because I wasn’t sure what it meant.””

I took it.

It was an old bank record.

My eyes moved across the page.

A payment.

A large payment.

Sent to Michael.

The date was one month before he disappeared.

The sender’s name was hidden.

But the account number was visible.

“Can we find out who owned this?””

David nodded.

“Your grandfather tried.””

“And?””

“He never finished.””

“Why?””

David looked at me.

“Because he got sick.””

My mother covered her mouth.

I stared at the document.

Someone had paid Michael to leave.

Someone had erased my father from my life.

But why?

Then my phone buzzed.

Rachel.

I answered immediately.

“Emma?””

“Yes.””

“I found another page.””

My heart raced.

“What does it say?””

She was quiet.

“Emma…”

“What?””

“It mentions David.””

I looked at him.

“What about him?””

Rachel swallowed.

“It says your grandfather didn’t just choose David as your guardian.””

A cold feeling spread through me.

“What else?””

She whispered:

“He chose David because he knew someone would try to take you away.””

The room went silent.

I looked at David.

“What does that mean?””

He didn’t answer.

And that scared me.

Because David always had an answer.

“David.””

He closed his eyes.

“I didn’t want you to know this part.””

“Know what?””

He looked at me.

“The reason I became your guardian wasn’t only because Michael left.””

My heart pounded.

“Then why?””

May you like

His voice was barely audible.

“Because someone tried to take you before.””
