Chapter 9: The Betrayal Inside My Own Home

I stared at the name on the screen.

My mind refused to process it.

“No.””

My voice was barely a whisper.

My father looked at me.

“Emma?””

I pointed at the screen.

“That’s not possible.””

Rachel looked uncomfortable.

“Do you know this person?””

I nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

My father stepped closer.

“Who?””

I couldn’t answer immediately.

Because saying the name out loud would make it real.

Finally, I whispered:

“Uncle Michael.””

The room went silent.

My father’s brother.

The man who had attended my wedding.

The man who gave a speech about how happy he was for me.

The man who hugged me and said Ethan was “a wonderful choice.””

My father looked stunned.

“Michael?””

Rachel nodded.

“The email account is linked to him.””

I grabbed the tablet.

The message was brief.

*She knows too much. We need to handle this before she talks.*

My blood ran cold.

“He wanted to stop me.””

My father’s face changed from shock to anger.

“I trusted him.””

I looked at him.

“You didn’t know.””

“But I should have.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Don’t do that.””

He looked at me.

“Do what?””

“Blame yourself for someone else’s betrayal.””

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Rachel interrupted.

“We need to be careful.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because if Michael has been working with Patricia, he may know everything.””

My father immediately reached for his phone.

But before he could call, another message appeared.

This time on my phone.

Unknown number.

A photo.

I opened it.

My heart stopped.

It was Michael.

Standing outside Ethan’s house.

Last night.

After I left.

Underneath the photo was a message.

*You should have stayed quiet.*

I felt ice move through my veins.

“He’s watching me.””

My father took the phone.

His expression became terrifyingly calm.

“He made a mistake.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“He showed us he’s afraid.””

The next few hours moved quickly.

Security was increased.

Lawyers were contacted.

Every piece of evidence was copied.

But I couldn’t stop thinking about one thing.

How many people had known?

How many people had smiled at me while hiding the truth?

That evening, I returned to the house where I grew up.

Not Ethan’s house.

Mine.

The place where I once felt safe.

I walked into the living room.

Everything looked normal.

Family photos.

Old books.

Memories.

Then I noticed something.

A framed photo on the shelf.

My wedding photo.

Someone had turned it face down.

I picked it up.

Behind the frame was a small envelope.

My name was written on it.

Not printed.

Handwritten.

My father saw it.

“Emma?””

I opened it carefully.

Inside was one page.

No signature.

Just a message.

*If you are reading this, they already know I betrayed them.*

I looked at my father.

“What is this?””

I kept reading.

*I never wanted this to happen. But Patricia threatened me. She knew something about our family that could destroy us.*

My hands shook.

The next sentence was worse.

*Ethan was never the real danger.*

I stopped.

My father noticed.

“What?””

I turned the paper.

He read the final line.

And his expression changed.

Because the person who wrote the letter wasn’t Michael.

It wasn’t Patricia.

It wasn’t Ethan.

It was someone else.

Someone who had been protecting a secret for years.

May you like

The letter ended with:

*Emma, your father has been lying to you too.*
