Chapter 12: The Truth About My Mother
The world seemed to stop.
I couldn’t hear anything.
Not the restaurant.
Not the people around me.
Only one sentence.
*He hid the reason your mother died.*
I looked at my father’s brother.
“You’re lying.””
Michael looked hurt.
“I wish I was.””
My security team moved closer.
But I raised my hand.
“Let him talk.””
Ethan looked at me.
“Emma…”
“No.””
I kept my eyes on Michael.
“I need answers.””
Michael nodded slowly.
“I was there twenty-five years ago.””
My heart raced.
“At the partnership meeting?””
“Yes.””
“With my mother?””
“Yes.””
He looked down.
“Your mother discovered Daniel Whitmore was stealing from the company.””
I listened carefully.
“She found evidence.””
“What evidence?””
“The original contracts.””
I remembered what Ethan said.
“The document.””
Michael nodded.
“Yes.””
My hands tightened.
“She was going to expose them.””
“Then what happened?””
Michael looked away.
“Your father found out.””
I froze.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
The restaurant suddenly felt too bright.
Too loud.
Michael continued.
“But he wasn’t helping Daniel.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He was trying to protect your mother.””
That didn’t make sense.
“Then why hide it?””
“Because after your mother died, your father believed the Whitmores would come after you.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Michael looked at me.
“You were three years old.””
I remembered almost nothing.
“He was terrified.””
“Terrified of what?””
Michael’s voice dropped.
“That they would finish what they started.””
I looked at Ethan.
Then back at Michael.
“Then why did Patricia say my father was hiding something?””
“Because she knew your father carried guilt.””
“What guilt?””
Michael hesitated.
Then:
“Your father made a mistake.””
My heart sank.
“What mistake?””
“He trusted the wrong person.””
Silence.
“Who?””
Michael looked directly at me.
“Me.””
Nobody spoke.
I felt like the ground disappeared.
“You?””
He nodded.
“I helped Daniel.””
My anger rose.
“Then why are you acting like you’re saving me?””
“Because I spent twenty-five years regretting it.””
I stared at him.
“You helped destroy my family.””
“Yes.””
“And now you want forgiveness?””
“No.””
His eyes filled with guilt.
“I want you to survive.””
Before I could respond, Ethan suddenly looked toward the window.
“Wait.””
Everyone turned.
A black SUV had stopped outside.
Ethan’s face changed.
“That’s my mother’s car.””
My blood ran cold.
Patricia.
Again.
But this time, she wasn’t alone.
A man stepped out beside her.
Older.
Cold expression.
Daniel Whitmore.
The man behind everything.
Michael whispered:
“He found us.””
The restaurant doors opened.
Patricia walked in first.
She looked calm.
Almost relieved.
Then Daniel entered behind her.
He looked directly at me.
And smiled.
“Emma.””
I felt my father’s absence beside me.
Because he had stayed behind.
Because he knew.
This moment was coming.
Daniel approached slowly.
“I’ve waited a long time to meet you.””
I stood my ground.
“You destroyed my family.””
He smiled.
“No.””
He looked at Ethan.
“Your family destroyed itself.””
Then he turned back to me.
“Your mother left you something.””
I froze.
“What?””
Daniel smiled wider.
“The document everyone has been searching for.””
My heart raced.
“Where is it?””
He leaned closer.
“Your father knows.””
I stared at him.
“Then why tell me?””
His smile disappeared.
“Because your father never told you the most important part.””
A pause.
Then:
“Your mother didn’t die because of us.””
The room went silent.
Daniel whispered:
“She died because she was betrayed by someone she trusted.””
I felt my breath stop.
“Who?””
Daniel looked toward the restaurant entrance.
And my father walked in.
His face was filled with fear.
Because he knew the truth was finally coming out.

Daniel smiled.
“Ask your father.””
