Chapter 3: The Lie He Told Everyone
By noon, my name was everywhere.
Not because I wanted it to be.
Because Ethan wanted a story.
And he had created one.
I sat in my father’s office staring at the news article on my laptop.
The headline was carefully written.
*Local Businessman’s Daughter Accused Of Destroying Husband’s Family After Wedding Dispute.*
My hands tightened around the edge of the desk.
“He moved fast,” I whispered.
My father stood near the window.
“He was prepared.””
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
He turned around.
“It means this wasn’t just anger.””
He walked toward the desk.
“People don’t build a public story in one night unless they already know what they want others to believe.””
I read the article again.
Every sentence made me feel sick.
According to Ethan, he had only asked me to “help around the house.””
According to Ethan, I had “overreacted.””
According to Ethan, my father had “threatened” him.
None of it mentioned the towel.
None of it mentioned Patricia laughing.
None of it mentioned him blocking the door.
My father sat across from me.
“Did he ever act like this before?””
I hesitated.
That question hurt more than I expected.
Because I started searching through memories.
Small moments.
Little comments.
Things I ignored because I loved him.
“He used to criticize my clothes sometimes.””
My father stayed silent.
“He said I was too independent.””
Another memory surfaced.
“He told me his mother would teach me how to be a proper wife.””
My father’s expression darkened.
“And you thought that was normal?””
I looked down.
“I thought he was joking.””
A knock interrupted us.
My father’s assistant entered.
“Mr. Carter, Ethan’s attorney is on the phone.””
My stomach dropped.
“Attorney?””
My father picked up the phone.
“Yes?””
He listened.
His expression changed slightly.
Then he handed the phone to me.
“He wants to speak with you.””
I stared at the phone.
Then answered.
“Hello?””
Ethan’s voice came through.
It sounded different.
Controlled.
Cold.
“Emma.””
I said nothing.
“You’re making a mistake.””
I closed my eyes.
“Are you threatening me?””
“No.””
A pause.
“I’m warning you.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“About what?””
His voice lowered.
“About what happens when people find out the truth.””
I laughed quietly.
“The truth?””
“Yes.””
He sounded confident again.
“You think your father can protect you forever?””
My father watched me carefully.
I stood up.
“What truth are you talking about?””
Ethan didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“The truth about why you married me.””
My blood went cold.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
“That’s insane.””
“Is it?””
The call ended.
I stared at the screen.
My father immediately stood.
“What did he say?””
I looked at him.
“He said people will find out why I married him.””
For the first time, my father looked confused.
And that scared me.
Because my father always had answers.
“What does he know?”” I asked.
He didn’t respond.
The silence between us grew heavier.
Then his assistant rushed back into the room holding a document.
“Mr. Carter…”
She looked nervous.
“There’s a problem.””
My father took the papers.
His eyes moved across the first page.
Then the second.
Then he slowly looked at me.
“Emma…”
I stood.
“What is it?””
He didn’t answer right away.
Instead, he placed the document on the desk.
And I saw Ethan’s signature at the bottom.
Along with my own.
A contract I had never seen before.
A contract dated three months before our wedding.
My father whispered:
“He didn’t marry you for the reason you thought.””
May you like
And then he turned the page.
The final line made my entire body go cold.
