Chapter 13: The Truth My Father Could Never Say

My father stood at the entrance of the restaurant.

For the first time in my life, I saw fear in his eyes.

Not worry.

Not concern.

Fear.

Daniel Whitmore smiled like he had been waiting for this exact moment.

“Tell her.””

My father didn’t move.

The entire restaurant felt frozen.

I looked between them.

“What is he talking about?””

My father opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

“Dad.””

My voice cracked.

“Tell me.””

He slowly walked toward me.

Every step looked heavier than the last.

“I wanted to protect you.””

I shook my head.

“Everyone says that.””

My voice grew louder.

“Everyone says they lied because they were protecting me.””

I pointed toward Daniel.

“Patricia said she was protecting her family.””

I pointed toward Ethan.

“He said he was protecting me.””

Then I looked at my father.

“And now you say the same thing.””

My father lowered his eyes.

“I know.””

“Then stop protecting me.””

The silence that followed was painful.

Finally, he nodded.

“Your mother didn’t die in an accident.””

My entire body went cold.

I had spent my whole life hearing the same story.

A rainy night.

A car crash.

A tragedy nobody could prevent.

But now my father was telling me it was a lie.

“She was investigating Daniel,” he continued.

Daniel’s smile faded slightly.

“She found proof that he had been stealing from our company for years.””

I looked at Daniel.

“You killed her.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

“No.””

My father stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Daniel looked amused.

“You still lie beautifully.””

My father ignored him.

“Your mother discovered the original partnership documents.””

“The ones proving the fraud?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you reveal them?””

My father looked at the floor.

“Because they disappeared.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“The night your mother died, the documents were gone.””

I looked at Michael.

My uncle looked away.

“You think Michael took them?””

My father didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

Michael stepped forward.

“I did.””

Everyone turned.

His voice shook.

“I took them.””

My anger returned.

“Why?””

“Because Daniel threatened my family.””

He looked at me.

“I thought I was saving myself.””

I stared at him.

“And my mother?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“I didn’t know what would happen.””

My father closed his eyes.

“That’s the part I never told you.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“Your mother knew Michael was involved.””

I froze.

“She knew?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did she trust him?””

My father’s voice became quiet.

“Because she believed people could change.””

The words hurt.

Because they sounded like something my mother would have said.

Daniel stepped forward.

“This is touching.””

Everyone looked at him.

“But none of this changes the fact that your father hid the truth.””

I turned toward Daniel.

“You’re enjoying this.””

He smiled.

“Because everyone thinks I’m the villain.””

“You are.””

He shrugged.

“Maybe.””

The answer surprised me.

Then he continued.

“But your father made choices too.””

My father looked at him.

“Enough.””

Daniel laughed.

“Still trying to control the story?””

I looked at my father.

“Is there more?””

He hesitated.

That hesitation broke my heart.

“Dad.””

He nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

I waited.

“The night your mother died…”

His voice became rough.

“I was supposed to be in that car.””

Nobody spoke.

“What?””

My father looked at me.

“She found out Daniel planned to confront her.””

My breathing stopped.

“She asked me to meet her.””

“Then why weren’t you there?””

His eyes filled with pain.

“Because I received a message telling me she changed locations.””

My father looked at Michael.

“And that message came from my brother.””

Michael closed his eyes.

“I was manipulated.””

“But you sent it.””

“Yes.””

The truth finally settled.

Not one villain.

Not one betrayal.

A chain of decisions.

A series of people choosing fear over honesty.

Then Daniel smiled.

“Now you understand.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

His smile faded.

“I understand something else.””

I stepped closer.

“Everyone here made mistakes.””

I looked at Ethan.

“Some unforgivable.””

Then Daniel.

“But you built your entire life on destroying other people.””

For the first time, Daniel looked angry.

Good.

Because I was done being afraid.

Then my father reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small envelope.

“I found this two days after your mother died.””

My heart stopped.

“What is it?””

He handed it to me.

“My mother left it for me.””

I opened it.

Inside was a single page.

Only a few words.

My hands shook as I read them.

*The original document is where Emma will always be safe.*

I looked up.

“What does that mean?””

My father stared at the letter.

“I never understood.””

Then I noticed something.

A symbol in the corner.

A symbol I had seen before.

On an old necklace my mother left me.

Daniel’s expression changed.

Because he recognized it too.

May you like

And for the first time…

he looked afraid.
