Chapter 8: The Person She Was Protecting

I read the name three times.

My mind refused to accept it.

The transfer was made to Mason.

Vanessa’s son.

For years, I had believed the story.

Mason was the one who needed help.

Mason was the one who struggled.

Mason was the reason Vanessa made sacrifices.

But the documents told a different story.

I drove home immediately.

When I walked inside, Mason was sitting at the dining table.

He looked surprised to see me.

“Hey.””

I placed the papers down.

“Mason, I need to ask you something.””

His smile disappeared.

“Okay.””

“Did you know about your mother’s private account?””

His eyebrows pulled together.

“What private account?””

I studied his face.

He wasn’t acting.

He genuinely didn’t know.

“Did she ever give you money outside of tuition?””

“No.””

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

He looked hurt.

“Why are you asking me this?””

I sat down.

“Because she sent money to you.””

His expression changed.

“What?””

I turned the document toward him.

He read the transfer.

Then shook his head.

“I didn’t ask for this.””

“I believe you.””

Mason looked toward the hallway.

“Where is Mom?””

“She’s at work.””

He stared at the paper.

“I thought she told you I was the problem.””

The words caught me off guard.

“What?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“She always compared me to Ethan.””

I blinked.

“Compared you?””

“Yes.””

Mason laughed sadly.

“She said Ethan had everything figured out. That I needed more help.””

I leaned back.

All this time, I thought Vanessa had been choosing Mason over Ethan.

But maybe she had been using both of them.

“You and Ethan were never the problem,” I said.

Mason looked at me.

“Then what was?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I was still trying to understand.

When Vanessa came home that evening, both boys were waiting.

She stopped when she saw them.

“What’s going on?””

Mason held up the document.

“Mom.””

Her face went pale.

“You weren’t supposed to see that.””

That sentence told us everything.

Mason stood.

“How long?””

She looked at him.

“How long what?””

“How long have you been making decisions for me without telling me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was protecting you.””

“No.””

His voice was stronger than I had ever heard.

“You were controlling everything.””

Vanessa looked at Ethan.

Then at Mason.

“I did what I thought was right.””

Ethan shook his head.

“You never asked us what we wanted.””

Nobody spoke.

That was the truth.

She had spent years making choices for everyone.

Then calling it love.

I stepped forward.

“Where did the money really come from?””

Vanessa looked away.

“I told you.””

“No.””

I held up the document.

“You told me about Tyler.””

I pointed at the transfer.

“But not this.””

She stayed quiet.

“Who else?””

Her face changed.

A small reaction.

But enough.

“There’s someone else.””

Mason looked confused.

“Mom?””

Vanessa sat down.

“I didn’t want you involved.””

“Who?””

She closed her eyes.

“My father.””

I froze.

Her father had been gone for years.

At least, that was what I believed.

“What about him?””

She looked at me.

“He left behind debts.””

“Debts?””

“Yes.””

“And you paid them?””

She nodded.

“With what?””

She didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

I already knew.

Our money.

Our savings.

Ethan’s tuition.

Everything.

But then Vanessa said something that changed the entire story.

“I wasn’t just paying his debts.””

I looked at her.

“What else?””

She swallowed.

“He left something behind.””

“What?””

“A company.””

I frowned.

“What does that have to do with anything?””

She looked at the three of us.

Then whispered:

“I own part of it.””

The room went completely silent.

A company.

A hidden inheritance.

A secret account.

Suddenly, none of it made sense.

If Vanessa owned something valuable, why had she taken our money?

Why had she risked destroying our family?

Then she opened another folder.

Inside was a document with a signature.

Her father’s signature.

And one sentence highlighted in yellow.

I read it.

Then I looked at Vanessa.

Because the document revealed the real reason she had been hiding everything.

May you like

She wasn’t trying to save money.

She was trying to keep someone else from finding it.
