Chapter 13: The Trap Hidden in Plain Sight

Ethan’s words stayed in my mind long after the phone call ended.

Someone wanted us to believe Vanessa stole the tuition money.

Not because she was innocent.

She wasn’t.

She had lied.

She had hidden accounts.

She had made decisions that hurt our family.

But someone else had taken advantage of those mistakes.

Someone had pushed the first domino.

And then waited for everything to fall.

“Ethan,” I said, “what did you find?””

“I found an email.””

“From who?””

“I don’t know.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Read it to me.””

There was a pause.

“Dad, it’s weird.””

“What do you mean?””

“It looks like a school payment confirmation.””

I frowned.

“Confirmation?””

“Yes. But it was canceled before the school received it.””

My heart started beating faster.

“Send it to me.””

A few seconds later, my phone buzzed.

I opened the attachment.

At first glance, it looked normal.

A tuition payment receipt.

Ethan’s name.

The college.

The exact amount.

Twenty thousand dollars.

But at the bottom was a cancellation notice.

The payment had been reversed.

The date was the morning after I transferred the money.

The same day Vanessa bought the handbag.

I looked at her.

“She did try to pay.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“What?””

I turned the screen toward her.

She read it.

Then covered her mouth.

“I didn’t cancel it.””

I believed her.

Because the confusion on her face was impossible to fake.

“Who had access?”” I asked.

Vanessa shook her head.

“Only me.””

“Think.””

She closed her eyes.

Then suddenly opened them.

“Tyler.””

The name hung in the air.

“What about Tyler?””

“He helped me set up the payment system.””

I stared at her.

“You gave him access?””

“I didn’t know he could change anything.””

The anger returned.

Not at Vanessa.

Not this time.

At the person who had manipulated every weakness in this family.

I called the attorney immediately.

Within hours, we were back in his office.

He reviewed the documents.

Then the email.

Then the transaction history.

“This changes things,” he said.

“How?””

“Because this shows intent.””

“Whose?””

He looked at Vanessa.

“Your brother’s.””

Vanessa looked down.

The pain on her face was different now.

Not guilt.

Betrayal.

“I trusted him.””

The attorney continued.

“Someone canceled the payment, then created a situation where you looked responsible.””

I leaned forward.

“Why?””

“To destroy trust between you and your husband.””

The answer was obvious.

Richard.

He needed Vanessa isolated.

He needed me angry.

He needed the family fighting instead of looking at him.

The plan had worked.

Almost.

The attorney pulled up another document.

“This was found in the company records.””

I read the page.

It was a communication between Richard and Tyler.

The date was two days before the tuition payment.

The message was short.

*Once the family turns against her, she’ll have no reason to fight.*

My stomach turned.

They weren’t just stealing.

They were breaking her.

That evening, I confronted Tyler.

He answered the door with a surprised expression.

“You again?””

I held up the printed messages.

His face changed.

Just for a second.

But I saw it.

“You used her.””

He stepped back.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“I understand perfectly.””

He laughed nervously.

“You think Vanessa is some innocent victim?””

“No.””

That surprised him.

I continued.

“She made choices. Bad ones.””

His smile faded.

“But you knew exactly what you were doing.””

He looked away.

“You’re blaming the wrong person.””

“Am I?””

He was silent.

Then he said something that confirmed everything.

“She always chooses family.””

I stared at him.

“You knew that was her weakness.””

He didn’t answer.

“You used the fact that she loved you.””

His expression hardened.

“Love makes people stupid.””

The cruelty of those words made my blood run cold.

Before I left, I asked one final question.

“Did Richard tell you what he planned to do after taking the company?””

Tyler smiled.

A small, nervous smile.

And that was when I knew.

He wasn’t in control.

He was just another person being used.

“He never planned to give me anything,” Tyler whispered.

The confidence disappeared from his face.

“I made a mistake.””

I turned toward him.

“What mistake?””

His voice lowered.

“Trusting Richard.””

As I walked away, my phone rang.

It was the attorney.

His voice was urgent.

“We found something else.””

“What?””

“A transfer.””

“From where?””

He paused.

“Richard’s account.””

“To who?””

I stopped walking.

May you like

Because I already knew the answer.

“Your wife.””
