Chapter 5: The Promise She Broke

I spent the entire night sitting at the kitchen table.

The same table where Ethan had studied for his exams.

The same table where Vanessa and I once planned our future.

I remembered those conversations.

We were younger.

Hopeful.

We talked about buying a bigger house someday.

Taking a family vacation.

Watching our kids graduate.

I never imagined that years later, I would be sitting in the same place trying to figure out what parts of my marriage were real.

At six in the morning, Vanessa walked into the kitchen.

She looked exhausted.

For the first time in days, she looked less angry and more afraid.

“We need to talk.””

I looked up.

“We’ve been talking.””

“No. We’ve been fighting.””

She pulled out a chair.

“I want you to understand why I did what I did.””

I didn’t answer.

She continued anyway.

“When I married you, I had nothing.””

“That’s not true.””

“It is.””

She looked down at her hands.

“Everyone thought I was fine because I had Mason. But I was drowning.””

I listened.

Not because I forgave her.

Because I needed to understand.

“Tyler was the only person who helped me back then,” she said.

“When he started making money, he promised he would take care of me.””

I frowned.

“Take care of you?””

“Yes.””

“And that’s why you hid money?””

She nodded.

“He put money aside for me.””

“Why?””

“Because he knew I had sacrificed for him.””

I leaned back.

“Vanessa, you have spent years protecting Tyler.””

She didn’t deny it.

“He was family.””

“And Ethan?””

Her eyes lowered.

I saw the answer before she spoke.

“I thought Ethan had you.””

I shook my head.

“You keep saying that like having a father means he doesn’t need a mother.””

She wiped her eyes.

“I made a mistake.””

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“But it wasn’t one mistake.””

She looked at me.

“You made hundreds of decisions.””

The room went silent.

A few hours later, Ethan came by to pick up some things from home.

Vanessa tried to act normal.

“Do you want lunch before you go?””

Ethan looked at her.

“No.””

It was the first time I had ever seen him reject her.

Not angrily.

Just emotionally.

And I knew that hurt her.

But I also knew he was allowed to hurt.

She had taken something from him that money couldn’t fix.

The feeling that his mother would choose him.

After Ethan left, Vanessa sat on the couch.

“He hates me.””

I stood near the doorway.

“He’s hurt.””

“Same thing.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Hate means you don’t care anymore.””

She looked at me.

“He still cares.””

“Yes.””

“And that’s why this hurts.””

For a moment, she looked like the woman I married.

The woman who cried during sad movies.

The woman who held my hand when my father died.

The woman I thought I knew.

Then my phone rang.

It was the bank.

I stepped outside to answer.

The representative had discovered something unusual.

A transfer.

A large one.

Made two days before I found the handbag receipt.

My heart tightened.

“Can you tell me who authorized it?””

The representative paused.

“Yes.””

I looked back through the window.

Vanessa was sitting alone.

Waiting.

“Who?””

The answer made my blood run cold.

Because it wasn’t Vanessa.

May you like

It wasn’t Tyler.

It was Ethan.
