Chapter 8: The Person Who Signed The Second Form
I barely slept that night.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Zoria standing in that apron.
I saw her holding dirty plates.
I saw her believing she had lost her future.
And I saw Melissa sitting there, knowing the truth.
But Andrew’s words kept coming back.
Melissa wasn’t working alone.
The next morning, I met him at the university.
He had a folder on the table.
Not the yellow one from the party.
A new one.
“This is about the enrollment delay,” Andrew said.
I sat down.
“Who else was involved?””
Andrew opened the folder.
“We found a second authorization request.””
I frowned.
“Signed by who?””
He turned the paper around.
I saw the name.
Rachel.
My stomach sank.
“She signed it too?””
Andrew nodded.
“She contacted the university claiming she was assisting the family.””
I closed my eyes.
Rachel.
The person who finally admitted the truth had also been part of hiding it.
“Why would she do that?””
Andrew folded his hands.
“That is something your family needs to discuss.””
I drove home feeling like I was carrying another weight.
When I arrived, Zoria was sitting in the living room.
Melissa was across from her.
They weren’t arguing.
They were just sitting there.
That somehow felt worse.
“Dad?””
I looked at Zoria.
“We need to talk.””
Melissa immediately looked nervous.
“What happened?””
I placed the folder on the table.
“Rachel signed another form.””
Zoria froze.
“She did?””
Melissa looked down.
“I told her not to.””
I stared at my wife.
“You knew?””
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
Zoria looked devastated.
“Everyone knew except me.””
“No,” I said quickly.
She looked at me.
“Dad.””
“I didn’t know.””
She nodded slowly.
“I know.””
But I could hear the pain behind those words.
Melissa stood.
“Zoria, I was trying to fix it.””
“Fix it?””
Melissa nodded.
“Yes.””
Zoria looked at her.
“You kept breaking things.””
The sentence made Melissa cry.
“I know.””
For the first time, she didn’t defend herself.
She just admitted it.
I looked at her.
“Why Rachel?””
Melissa sat down.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Afraid enough to involve your sister?””
She nodded.
“I thought she would understand.””
Rachel arrived an hour later.
When she walked in, she immediately knew.
Nobody needed to explain.
She saw the folder.
“I guess you found out.””
Zoria looked at her.
“Why?””
Rachel’s face fell.
“Because Melissa convinced me you were going to abandon your family.””
Zoria stared.
“I was going to college.””
“I know.””
“That’s not abandoning anyone.””
Rachel looked ashamed.
“I know that now.””
I stepped forward.
“No.””
Everyone looked at me.
“You don’t get to say you know that now.””
My voice was calm.
“But I do want to understand.””
Rachel nodded.
“I thought I was helping Melissa deal with her fear.””
“And what did you think would happen to Zoria?””
Rachel had no answer.
That was the hardest part.
Nobody had considered the person at the center of all this.
My daughter.
That evening, Zoria packed a small bag.
I watched her carefully.
“Where are you going?””
She looked at me.
“I’m staying with you.””
I nodded.
Then she added:
“But I need space from Mom.””
Melissa stood nearby.
The pain on her face was obvious.
But for once, she didn’t argue.
She just nodded.
“I understand.””
Later that night, I found Melissa sitting alone in the kitchen.
“I lost her.””
I leaned against the doorway.
“You hurt her.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
There was a long silence.
Then she whispered:
“I never told you the whole story.””
I looked at her.
“What else is there?””
Melissa looked toward the stairs.
“Before Zoria got the scholarship…”
She stopped.
“Before that?””
She nodded.
“There was another reason I was afraid of her leaving.””
My heart sank.
“What reason?””
May you like
Melissa looked at me.
“Because Zoria was going to find out who her biological father really was.””
