Chapter 2: The Signature That Exposed Everything

Nobody moved after Andrew Collins finished speaking.

It felt like the entire backyard had stopped breathing.

My wife, Melissa, who always seemed to have an explanation for everything, suddenly looked like she had forgotten how to speak.

I watched her carefully.

For years, I had seen her control every room she entered.

She controlled conversations.

She controlled decisions.

She controlled how people viewed our family.

But now, standing in front of a university admissions officer, she looked completely different.

“Mr. Collins,” Melissa finally said, forcing a small smile.

“I think there has been some misunderstanding.””

Andrew didn’t smile back.

“I don’t believe there has.””

He opened the folder.

“I contacted Zoria after noticing unusual activity regarding her scholarship status.””

My daughter covered her mouth.

“You contacted me?””

Andrew nodded.

“Yes. You never confirmed the withdrawal personally.””

Melissa immediately interrupted.

“She changed her mind.””

Andrew looked at her.

“Did she?””

The question hung in the air.

Zoria stepped closer.

“No.””

Her voice was quiet.

“I never contacted the university.””

I looked at my wife.

“Then who did?””

Melissa looked uncomfortable.

“Daniel, this is not the place.””

I almost laughed.

“Not the place?””

I pointed around us.

“This is the place where you made our daughter serve food because you wanted everyone to believe she failed.””

A few guests started whispering.

Melissa’s eyes narrowed.

“You’re embarrassing me.””

I shook my head.

“You embarrassed her.””

Kendra suddenly stood.

“Mom…”

Everyone looked at her.

Melissa’s expression changed.

“Kendra, sit down.””

But Kendra didn’t.

“I didn’t know she was going to lose it.””

Zoria looked at her.

“You knew?””

Kendra looked away.

“I knew Mom wanted me to have a chance.””

My stomach dropped.

I had always tried to treat Kendra like my own child.

I helped with homework.

I attended school events.

I never wanted her to feel like an outsider.

But now I was realizing there were things happening in my house that I didn’t know about.

Andrew looked at Kendra carefully.

“Can you explain what you mean?””

Melissa stepped forward.

“That is enough.””

“No,” I said.

My voice surprised even me.

“No more stopping people from telling the truth.””

The backyard became quiet again.

Andrew turned a page in the folder.

“We received a withdrawal request three weeks after Zoria’s acceptance.””

He looked at my daughter.

“You were supposed to attend orientation next month.””

Zoria nodded.

“I was.””

Andrew continued.

“The request stated that you wanted to give up your scholarship voluntarily.””

He paused.

“But when we reviewed the communication history, there were several inconsistencies.””

Melissa crossed her arms.

“This is ridiculous.””

Andrew looked at her.

“Is it?””

He removed a document from the folder.

“There were messages sent from an email account connected to this household.””

My heart sank.

Melissa immediately said, “Anyone could have accessed that.””

Andrew nodded.

“Correct.””

Then he looked at Zoria.

“Which is why we requested confirmation.””

He pulled out another paper.

“And when your daughter refused to confirm the withdrawal, we reopened the case.””

Zoria started crying.

“I thought it was too late.””

Andrew shook his head.

“No. Your scholarship was placed on hold pending investigation.””

I looked at my daughter.

She had been carrying this pain alone.

She thought her dream was gone.

She thought she had disappointed me.

I walked toward her and hugged her.

“I’m sorry.””

She cried into my shoulder.

“I thought you would be angry.””

“Angry?””

I held her tighter.

“I’m angry that you thought you had to handle this by yourself.””

Behind us, Melissa let out a frustrated breath.

“This is all being blown out of proportion.””

I turned around.

“No.””

My voice was calm now.

“This is exactly the size it needs to be.””

She stared at me.

“You’re choosing her over me?””

I couldn’t believe what I heard.

“She is our daughter.””

Melissa’s face hardened.

“She’s not the only child in this family.””

Kendra looked hurt.

“That’s not fair, Mom.””

Melissa looked at her.

“Stay out of this.””

Andrew closed the folder.

“Mrs. Davis, there is another issue.””

My wife froze.

“What issue?””

He looked at the papers.

“The university received additional information about why the scholarship was supposedly withdrawn.””

I felt a strange chill.

“What information?””

Andrew looked at Zoria.

Then at Melissa.

“The claim was that Zoria was no longer interested in attending because she wanted to focus on family responsibilities.””

Zoria shook her head.

“I never said that.””

Andrew nodded.

“I know.””

He reached into the folder and pulled out one final envelope.

“This statement was submitted with the withdrawal request.””

Melissa’s face turned pale.

I stepped closer.

“What statement?””

Andrew looked directly at my wife.

“The one explaining why Zoria supposedly chose to give up her future.””

He slowly opened the envelope.

“And the person who wrote it made one mistake.””

Melissa stopped breathing.

Andrew looked around the silent backyard.

“They used details that only someone inside this family would know.””

May you like

Then he turned the paper toward himself.

“And that person signed their real name at the bottom.””
