Chapter 10: The Man Who Came Back Too Late
The man standing at my front door looked like someone who had spent years carrying a question he was afraid to ask.
His eyes stayed fixed on Zoria.
Not on me.
Not on Melissa.
Only her.
“Is she really my daughter?””
The words were quiet.
But they changed everything.
Zoria stood behind me, frozen.
I could see the confusion on her face.
She had spent days discovering one hidden truth after another.
And now another person from her past was standing in front of her.
Melissa stepped forward.
“Thomas…”
His eyes moved toward her.
“You told me she didn’t want to know.””
Melissa’s face went pale.
Zoria looked between them.
“What does that mean?””
Nobody answered.
That silence was enough.
I stepped outside.
“Thomas, you need to explain.””
He nodded slowly.
“I know.””
He looked ashamed.
“I should have come years ago.””
Zoria finally spoke.
“Why didn’t you?””
Her voice wasn’t angry.
It was worse.
It was hurt.
Thomas looked at her.
“Because your mother told me you hated me.””
Melissa closed her eyes.
“Thomas.””
“No.””
He looked at her.
“I’m done letting you speak for everyone.””
My chest tightened.
Another person had been making decisions for Zoria.
Another person had decided what she should know.
“What happened?”” I asked.
Thomas took a breath.
“After we separated, Melissa told me she wanted full distance. She said Zoria was young and confused.””
He looked at Zoria.
“She told me you didn’t need me.””
Zoria’s eyes filled.
“Did you believe her?””
Thomas looked down.
“At first.””
That answer hurt.
“But later?””
“I tried contacting her.””
Melissa interrupted.
“Thomas, this isn’t helping.””
I turned toward her.
“Actually, it is.””
She went quiet.
Thomas continued.
“I sent letters. I called. I visited.””
Zoria looked at her mother.
“Is that true?””
Melissa didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
I felt anger building again.
But this time, I wasn’t only angry for Zoria’s future.
I was angry for all the years she lost.
Thomas looked at her.
“I’m not here to replace anyone.””
His eyes moved toward me.
“I know Daniel raised you.””
Zoria looked at me.
Then back at him.
“I don’t know what I’m supposed to feel.””
Thomas nodded.
“You don’t have to feel anything today.””
That surprised me.
He wasn’t demanding forgiveness.
He wasn’t acting like he could walk back into her life and erase eighteen years.
“I just wanted you to know the truth.””
Zoria sat down.
For a while, nobody spoke.
Then she asked:
“Why now?””
Thomas looked at Melissa.
“Because I found out about the scholarship situation.””
Melissa looked shocked.
“How?””
“Rachel contacted me.””
Everyone froze.
Rachel.
Again.
I stared at him.
“Why would Rachel contact you?””
Thomas hesitated.
“Because she felt guilty.””
Zoria looked confused.
“About what?””
Thomas reached into his jacket.
He pulled out an envelope.
“I was given this.””
I took it.
“What is it?””
Thomas looked at Melissa.
“Something she wrote.””
Melissa’s expression changed.
“No.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
I read the first lines.
My hands tightened.
It was from Melissa.
But it wasn’t recent.
It was years old.
The letter explained why she kept Thomas away.
And one sentence made my stomach drop.
*“If Daniel knows the truth, he might leave.””*
I looked up.
Melissa was crying.
“You were afraid I would leave?””
She nodded.
“I was afraid everyone would leave.””
I stared at her.
“And you thought lying was the way to keep people?””
She whispered:
“I didn’t know any other way.””
Zoria stood.
“I need air.””
She walked toward the door.
I wanted to follow.
But she stopped.
“Dad.””
I looked at her.
“Let me go alone.””
Those words hurt.
But I understood.
She needed space.
After she left, I turned toward Melissa.
“I need to know everything.””
She looked exhausted.
“Everything?””
“Yes.””
No more pieces.
No more surprises.
She nodded.
Then whispered:
“There is one more thing.””
My stomach sank.
“What?””
Melissa looked toward the door where Zoria had disappeared.
“Thomas isn’t the only person who has been looking for her.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Melissa’s face turned pale.
“Someone else from her past knows about the scholarship.””
I stared at her.
“Who?””
May you like
She took a shaky breath.
“Someone who believes Zoria belongs to them.””
