Chapter 13: The Betrayal Nobody Expected

For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.

The woman on the phone waited.

I looked at Zoria sitting beside me.

She was watching my face carefully.

“Daniel?”” the woman asked.

“Are you still there?””

“Yes.””

My voice sounded distant.

“Who is the application advisor?””

“My name is Laura Bennett. I work with Westbridge University’s admissions review team.””

I gripped the phone tighter.

“What does she have to do with this?””

Laura took a breath.

“During our final review, we found inconsistencies in the timeline of the withdrawal request.””

I looked toward the house.

Everything felt like it was happening again.

Another document.

Another secret.

Another person making choices for my daughter.

“What inconsistencies?””

“The request was submitted before the meeting where Mrs. Davis supposedly convinced Zoria to withdraw.””

I frowned.

“That’s impossible.””

“It shouldn’t be.””

My stomach tightened.

“Are you saying someone planned this before Melissa talked to her?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Zoria.

Her expression changed.

She understood.

This was bigger than our family.

“Who is Laura Bennett?”” she whispered.

I covered the phone.

“She works with the university.””

Zoria stood.

“Why would she be involved?””

I didn’t know.

And that scared me.

I returned to the call.

“What happens now?””

Laura answered carefully.

“We need Zoria to come in tomorrow. There are questions about whether someone influenced the original scholarship process.””

I nodded.

“We’ll be there.””

After I ended the call, Zoria sat quietly.

For the first time in days, she looked tired instead of hurt.

“I thought it was over.””

I sat beside her.

“I know.””

She looked at me.

“When does it stop?””

I didn’t have a perfect answer.

So I gave her the truth.

“When people keep hiding things, it takes time for everything to come out.””

The next morning, Zoria and I arrived at Westbridge University.

Andrew was waiting for us.

He looked serious.

“I wish we were meeting under better circumstances.””

Zoria forced a small smile.

“So do I.””

Inside the office, another admissions officer joined us.

She introduced herself as Laura Bennett.

I immediately recognized her from the phone.

She looked uncomfortable.

“Zoria, I want to start by saying something important.””

Zoria nodded.

“Okay.””

“You were not responsible for any of this.””

My daughter looked down.

“I know.””

But I knew she still carried some of the blame.

Laura opened a file.

“We discovered that your application advisor accessed your student records multiple times.””

Andrew continued.

“The unusual activity started shortly after your scholarship was awarded.””

Zoria frowned.

“Why?””

Laura looked at the papers.

“That is what we are investigating.””

I leaned forward.

“Did she communicate with Melissa?””

Laura paused.

“Yes.””

Zoria closed her eyes.

Another betrayal.

“Why?””

Laura answered honestly.

“We don’t know yet.””

After the meeting, Zoria and I sat outside the building.

She looked exhausted.

“Everyone knew pieces of my life.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

“But me.””

She touched her chest.

“I didn’t even know my own story.””

I wanted to fix it.

I wanted to tell her everything would be easy now.

But I couldn’t lie to her.

So I said:

“You know something important.””

She looked at me.

“What?””

“You know who you are.””

She was quiet.

Then she smiled slightly.

“I guess I do.””

That evening, Melissa asked to speak with us.

When we arrived home, she was sitting at the kitchen table.

No excuses.

No explanations.

Just a tired woman looking at the damage she had caused.

“I need to tell you something.””

I sat down.

“What?””

Melissa looked at Zoria.

“The advisor contacted me first.””

My daughter froze.

“What?””

Melissa nodded.

“She told me she could help change your path.””

I stared.

“Change your path?””

Melissa swallowed.

“She convinced me that keeping you close was the right thing.””

Zoria looked devastated.

“So she encouraged you?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Melissa started crying.

“Because I was ashamed.””

The room went quiet.

Then Melissa reached into a drawer.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“I kept this because I couldn’t admit what I did.””

She handed it to Zoria.

“What is it?””

Melissa whispered:

“The first message she sent me.””

Zoria opened it.

She read silently.

Then her face changed.

“What?””

I looked at her.

“What does it say?””

She handed me the paper.

My eyes moved across the page.

And one sentence made my blood run cold.

*“If we remove Zoria’s scholarship, she will have no reason to leave home.””*

I looked at Melissa.

Then at Zoria.

Because suddenly we understood.

This was never about helping anyone.

Someone had been trying to control her future from the beginning.
