Chapter 8: The Secret Buried for Twelve Years

My father sat in his armchair while Evelyn placed a cushion behind his back. Max settled at his feet, his golden head resting against Dad's slipper.

The sight should have comforted me.

Instead, I couldn't stop thinking about Dad's words.

“What did you keep hidden?”” I asked.

Dad looked down at his hands.

“Twelve years ago, Daniel didn't just take money from the company. He took a document that could have destroyed someone else's life.””

Evelyn opened her briefcase again.

“Richard, are you sure you want to discuss this tonight?””

Dad nodded.

“Michael deserves to know why his brother has returned.””

Vanessa remained near the doorway, clutching her handbag.

“I think this is getting out of hand,” she said.

“We should all calm down and talk tomorrow.””

“No,” Dad replied.

“Tomorrow is what Daniel has been counting on.””

He looked at me.

“Do you remember the construction company I owned before I retired?””

“Of course.””

I'd spent summers there as a teenager, sweeping the workshop and carrying paperwork between the offices. Daniel had worked there full-time after college.

Dad had built the business from two pickup trucks and a rented garage into a company employing dozens of people.

“Twelve years ago,” Dad continued, “we were preparing to bid on a major public infrastructure contract. Daniel was responsible for the financial records. A few days before the bid, Evelyn discovered that several confidential documents had disappeared.””

Evelyn nodded.

“One of those documents contained evidence of improper payments made by a subcontractor. The information was important because it showed that someone had been bribing a procurement officer.””

I frowned.

“Who?””

Evelyn took a sheet from her folder.

“His name was Robert Keane. He was a senior executive at the subcontracting company.””

The name meant nothing to me.

Dad continued.

“Daniel had become friendly with Keane. He insisted the man was trustworthy. When the documents went missing, Daniel accused Evelyn of trying to sabotage the bid.””

“Why would he do that?”” I asked.

“Because Daniel had already promised Keane access to our company's confidential pricing information,” Evelyn replied.

“In exchange, Keane promised him a lucrative consulting position.””

I stared at my brother's old bank statements.

“So the missing money was connected to that deal?””

“Partly,” Dad said.

“But the bigger problem was the document Daniel took.””

Evelyn reached into her briefcase and removed a sealed envelope.

“The original records contained evidence that Keane had authorized payments through an intermediary. Daniel believed that if those records disappeared, no one could prove what had happened.””

“Did Dad have copies?””

“Yes,” Evelyn answered.

“But the originals were important because they contained handwritten notes and a signed acknowledgment.””

Dad leaned forward.

“I confronted Daniel. I gave him a chance to return the documents and tell the truth.””

“What did he say?””

Dad's eyes grew wet.

“He said I was trying to ruin his life. He accused me of favoring you because you had never challenged me.””

I remembered Daniel's bitterness. Even as children, he'd accused Dad of treating me differently.

But Dad had never stopped supporting him.

“What happened after that?”” I asked.

“Daniel left,” Dad said.

“He told everyone I had stolen money from his business and forced him out. I allowed people to believe there had been a private disagreement because I didn't want the employees dragged into a public scandal.””

Evelyn folded her hands.

“Richard also believed Daniel would eventually return the documents.””

“Did he?””

“No,” Dad replied.

He paused, then looked directly at me.

“Three months ago, Daniel called me. He said he wanted to reconcile. He claimed he had proof that Keane had framed him.””

“Was that true?””

“I don't know. He asked me to meet him privately. I agreed because he's my son.””

Dad's voice trembled.

“He told me the original document could clear his name. He said he would return it if I helped him settle his debts.””

I felt sick.

“So he was blackmailing you?””

“He called it a family arrangement.””

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“He told me your father had destroyed his life. He said Richard kept evidence that could send him to prison.””

Evelyn turned toward her.

“And you believed him?””

“He showed me letters. He said he had been trying to repair the damage for years.””

“Did he show you the original document?””

“No.””

“Did he show you any proof that Richard had framed him?””

Vanessa's mouth tightened.

“No.””

Evelyn nodded sadly.

“Then he gave you a story designed to make you feel sorry for him.””

Vanessa looked toward the floor.

Dad reached for the sealed envelope.

“Michael, the original document is not here. I don't know where Daniel has hidden it. But he believes I still have a copy that could expose him.””

I stared at the envelope.

“What's inside?””

“A letter I wrote to Daniel twelve years ago. I asked him to return what he had taken and offered to help him start over.””

“Did he respond?””

Dad shook his head.

“No. But last month, someone broke into my old office and searched the filing cabinets.””

My heart pounded.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I thought it was connected to Daniel's debts. I didn't want to frighten you.””

Evelyn's face had grown pale.

“Richard, did you report the break-in?””

“Yes. The police took a statement, but nothing appeared to be missing.””

“Except the trust documents,” I said.

Dad nodded.

“I kept copies at home. Daniel knew that.””

The pieces were coming together. Daniel had returned under the pretense of reconciliation, searched for the trust agreement, and recruited Vanessa to help him gain control of Dad's affairs.

But there was still one question.

“Why does the old construction document matter now?”” I asked.

Evelyn took a slow breath.

“Because Robert Keane is the buyer.””

Silence swallowed the room.

I stared at her.

“The man involved in the bribery scandal?””

“Yes. He has spent years trying to acquire properties connected to Richard's old business. The house is valuable, but the trust contains something else that interests him.””

“What?””

Evelyn looked at Dad.

Dad closed his eyes.

“A storage unit,” he whispered.

“One I haven't opened in twelve years.””

“What is inside?””

“The original construction records. Everything I could preserve before Daniel disappeared.””

Evelyn nodded.

“Richard placed those records in secure storage after the scandal. The unit is registered under the trust. If Daniel obtains control of the trust, he may be able to access it.””

My skin prickled.

“Then the house sale is a distraction.””

“Possibly,” Evelyn said.

“Or it's a way to obtain control of the trust and everything connected to it.””

Vanessa sank into a chair.

“I didn't know about the storage unit.””

Dad looked at her.

“But you knew about the sale.””

She began to cry.

“I thought Daniel just wanted the money.””

Evelyn's voice softened, but her words remained firm.

“You helped him attempt to take control of an elderly man's property. Whether you understood the entire plan or not, you need to tell the truth now.””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“I will.””

Before anyone could respond, my phone rang.

The caller ID displayed a name I hadn't seen in twelve years.

Daniel.

I answered without speaking.

For several seconds, neither of us said anything.

Then my brother's voice came through, calm and almost cheerful.

“Michael. I hear you've been asking questions.””

I looked at Dad.

He had gone completely still.

Daniel continued.

“Listen carefully. Whatever Vanessa has told you, don't believe it. She's only a small part of what's happening.””

“What are you doing to Dad?””

A pause.

Then Daniel laughed softly.

“Trying to protect him from the truth.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What truth?””

His voice dropped.

“Ask Dad who signed the original contract with Robert Keane.””

The call ended.

I turned toward my father.

May you like

His face had gone gray.

And when I asked him whether Daniel was telling the truth, Dad looked away and whispered, “I signed it.””
