Chapter 4: The Signature That Wasn't His

I had seen my father's signature thousands of times.

It was on birthday cards, school permission slips, loan documents, and the first check he ever wrote to help me start my business. His handwriting had always been unmistakable: the capital R leaned slightly to the right, and the final stroke of his surname ended in a short, sharp line.

The signature on the letter looked almost identical.

Almost.

"Who had access to Dad's personal documents?"" I asked.

Vanessa stood near the kitchen island, gripping her handbag so tightly that her knuckles had turned white.

"I don't know what you're implying.""

"I'm asking a simple question.""

"Then ask your father. Maybe he signed it and forgot.""

Dad slowly shook his head.

"I didn't sign that paper.""

Vanessa threw her hands up.

"How convenient!""

I placed the document on the table.

"Stop shouting at him.""

"I'm not shouting!""

"You just accused an eighty-two-year-old man of forgetting that he signed a document declaring himself incompetent.""

Her mouth tightened.

For the first time since I'd arrived home, she had nothing to say.

I pulled out a chair and sat beside Dad.

"Tell me everything you remember about Tuesday. Start from the beginning.""

Dad rubbed his knees before answering.

"Vanessa told me she had scheduled a checkup. She said you wanted to make sure I was healthy enough to keep living here.""

"Did she say I asked for it?""

"Yes.""

I looked at Vanessa.

She turned toward the sink.

Dad continued.

"She drove me to the clinic. Before we went inside, she gave me some papers to read. She said they were routine forms.""

"Did you sign anything?""

"No. I asked her why one of the pages mentioned property, and she told me not to worry about it.""

"What happened after the appointment?""

Dad hesitated.

"She left me in the waiting room and went outside to make a phone call. When she came back, she said the doctor needed more time to review my condition.""

"How long were you there?""

"Nearly three hours.""

I glanced at the clock.

Dad had been away from the house for almost half the day, and I hadn't known anything about it.

"Did you call me?""

"I tried.""

His answer came so quietly that I almost missed it.

I took his phone from the table and checked the recent calls. Three calls to my number appeared on Tuesday afternoon. All had gone unanswered because I'd been in a meeting.

There was also a text message.

Michael, please call me when you can. I need to ask you something about the house.

I'd never seen it.

"Why didn't you tell me she was taking you to the doctor?"" I asked.

Dad lowered his eyes.

"She said you were busy. She told me if I caused trouble, you'd send me somewhere and stop visiting.""

My chest tightened.

"She said that?""

He nodded.

Vanessa suddenly turned around.

"That's not what I said!""

Dad looked at her.

"You said Michael had a life of his own and wouldn't want to spend it looking after me.""

"I was frustrated!""

"You said I was becoming a burden.""

Vanessa slapped the counter with her palm.

"Because you were! Do you have any idea how difficult it is to live with someone who needs help getting dressed, who can't climb stairs, who leaves things everywhere?""

Dad looked down at his cardigan.

"I dress myself.""

"Not every day!""

"Vanessa," I warned.

She grabbed her wineglass, discovered it was empty, and shoved it into the sink hard enough to make it clatter.

"You want the truth? Fine. I was tired of being the only person dealing with him. Daniel offered a solution, and I listened.""

I stood.

"What solution?""

"Professional care. A proper facility. Somewhere he could be monitored.""

"Then why hide it from me?""

"Because you would have said no!""

"Maybe because you were planning to have him declared incompetent without telling his own son!""

She flinched.

Dad reached into the notebook and removed another folded paper.

"This was in the bedroom," he said.

It was a handwritten list of financial accounts, property details, and contact information. Several entries had been highlighted in yellow.

At the bottom, someone had written:

Once authority is granted, transfer the house proceeds into the holding account before Michael learns about the sale.

My fingers tightened around the paper.

"What's the holding account?""

Vanessa looked toward the front door.

I stepped into her line of sight.

"Don't even think about leaving before you answer.""

She lifted her chin.

"You can't keep me here.""

"I'm not keeping you anywhere. But I am asking you a question.""

"I don't know anything about a holding account.""

"Then why is your name written beside it?""

She stared at the paper.

The silence lasted too long.

Dad suddenly reached for my arm.

"Michael, there's something else I haven't told you.""

I turned toward him.

"What is it?""

"Two weeks ago, Daniel came to the house while you were at work.""

I felt a chill travel down my back.

"My brother was here?""

Dad nodded.

"He told me he wanted to apologize. He brought flowers and sat with me in the living room. For a while, I thought he meant it.""

"What did he say?""

Dad's eyes grew distant.

"He said he wanted to make things right before it was too late. Then he asked whether I'd ever consider selling the house.""

I looked at Vanessa.

She didn't deny it.

"Did you agree?"" I asked Dad.

"No. I told him this was my home, and I intended to stay here as long as I could.""

"What did Daniel do?""

Dad swallowed.

"He said I wouldn't have much choice once a doctor confirmed I couldn't make decisions for myself.""

The room seemed to shrink around me.

I looked at the forged letter again.

The signature wasn't merely an imitation. It was part of a plan that had begun weeks before the appointment.

And Daniel had been inside our house.

"Did he take anything?"" I asked.

Dad nodded toward the hallway.

"My file folder. The one with the trust documents and my medical records.""

I turned toward Vanessa.

"Where is that folder?""

She stared at me without blinking.

Then she whispered something I hadn't expected.

"Daniel has it.""

Before I could respond, my phone vibrated.

A message had arrived from an unknown number.

If you want to know what your wife and brother have really been planning, check the security footage from Tuesday afternoon.

A second message followed.

But don't tell Vanessa you've seen it.

I raised my eyes.

May you like

My wife was watching me.

And judging by the sudden fear on her face, she knew exactly who had sent the messages.
