Chapter 7: The Woman Who Knew My Brother's Secret

The knock came again.

Three sharp strikes against the front door.

Vanessa backed away from the kitchen table as though the sound itself had threatened her.

“Don't open it,” she whispered.

I stared at her.

“You just told me I needed to ask Dad about the past. Now you're afraid of the person who might explain it?””

“Michael, please. You don't know what you're getting involved in.””

“Then tell me.””

She shook her head.

Another knock sounded.

I walked to the front door and opened it.

A woman in her late sixties stood on the porch, dressed in a navy coat despite the warm Atlanta evening. Her silver hair was pulled into a neat bun, and she held a leather briefcase against her side.

Her eyes moved past me toward the hallway.

“Is Richard here?”” she asked.

“Who are you?””

“My name is Evelyn Brooks. Your father asked me to come if anything happened to him.””

My stomach tightened.

“What do you mean, if anything happened to him?””

Evelyn looked at my face, then lowered her voice.

“Has Daniel contacted him recently?””

I stepped aside.

“Come in.””

The moment Evelyn entered the living room, Vanessa appeared at the end of the hallway.

“You have some nerve showing up here.””

Evelyn didn't even look at her.

“Good evening, Vanessa.””

“Get out of my house.””

Evelyn set her briefcase on the coffee table.

“It's Richard's house. And you know that better than anyone.””

Vanessa's face reddened.

“You have no idea what you're talking about.””

“I know about the medical appointment. I know about the application for financial authority. And I know someone has been trying to sell a property they have no legal right to sell.””

Vanessa's lips parted.

I stepped between them.

“Before anyone says another word, I want answers. Who are you, and why did my father leave instructions for you?””

Evelyn studied me carefully.

“Your father and I worked together for nearly thirty years. We met when he was a young construction supervisor. He helped me establish a small contracting company after my husband died, and we eventually became business partners.””

“I've never heard of you.””

“That was intentional.””

“Why?””

Evelyn opened her briefcase and removed a thick folder.

“Twelve years ago, your brother Daniel was accused of diverting money from a construction project your father had financed. Richard believed the matter could be handled privately. He gave Daniel a chance to repay what was missing.””

Vanessa interrupted.

“That isn't true.””

Evelyn finally turned toward her.

“You were not there.””

“I know what Daniel told me.””

“And that is precisely the problem.””

I felt a knot forming in my stomach.

“How much money was missing?””

“Approximately four hundred thousand dollars,” Evelyn answered.

“Some funds were recovered, but not all of them.””

I remembered the argument Dad had refused to discuss. Daniel had left the family after accusing our father of controlling his life. I'd always assumed it was another dispute over money.

“Did Dad report him to the police?”” I asked.

“No. Richard was devastated. He wanted Daniel to make things right without destroying his future.””

“Then why did Daniel disappear?””

Evelyn's expression softened.

“Because your father discovered that the missing money was not the whole story.””

She opened the folder and placed several bank statements on the table.

The transactions were dated twelve years earlier. Several large transfers had been made from a company account to a private business Daniel controlled.

But one transfer stood out.

It had been authorized using my father's name.

“That's impossible,” I said.

“Dad would never have approved this.””

“He didn't,” Evelyn replied.

“Someone forged his signature.””

I looked up sharply.

“Daniel?””

“We couldn't prove who did it. Your father chose not to pursue criminal charges at the time because he believed a public investigation would ruin several employees who had nothing to do with the theft.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Daniel said Richard stole the money from him. He said his father destroyed his business and then threatened to send him to prison.””

Evelyn's voice remained calm.

“Daniel told you that?””

“Yes.””

“Then he lied.””

Vanessa looked as if she'd been slapped.

I pulled out a chair.

“Why would Daniel come back after twelve years and target Dad's house?””

Evelyn took a folded document from the folder.

“Because Richard recently changed the trust's terms.””

My pulse quickened.

“What changed?””

“Your father discovered that Daniel had accumulated substantial debts. He also learned that Daniel had been approaching people connected to the old construction company, claiming he was entitled to money that had been withheld from him.””

She placed the document in front of me.

“Richard added safeguards to prevent the trust's assets from being transferred without independent review. He also designated a successor trustee in case he became incapacitated.””

“Who?””

Evelyn met my eyes.

“Me.””

I stared at her.

“Dad appointed you to protect the house?””

“To protect the trust. The house is only one of its assets.””

Behind us, Vanessa made a small, strangled sound.

Evelyn glanced toward her.

“Did Daniel tell you that the house was worth eight hundred and fifty thousand dollars?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

“He told me the buyer had offered that amount,” I said.

Evelyn nodded slowly.

“Then he's moving faster than I expected.””

“Why?””

“Because the trust contains a provision that could prevent him from benefiting if the property is sold under fraudulent circumstances.””

I leaned forward.

“What provision?””

Evelyn closed the folder.

“I need to speak to Richard before discussing the full terms. But I can tell you this: if someone has attempted to forge his signature or misrepresent his medical condition, the trustee can seek an immediate injunction to stop any unauthorized transfer.””

“Can we stop the sale?””

“If we act quickly.””

Vanessa suddenly stepped toward the front door.

“I need to call Daniel.””

Evelyn stood.

“No.””

Vanessa spun around.

“You don't get to tell me what to do!””

“I am telling you that if you warn Daniel, you may give him an opportunity to destroy evidence.””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“You don't understand. He said everything was already arranged.””

My blood ran cold.

“What does that mean?””

She looked at me, then at Evelyn.

Finally, she whispered, “Daniel said the buyer had already paid a deposit.””

Evelyn's expression changed.

“How much?””

“Fifty thousand dollars.””

“Where did the money go?””

Vanessa pressed her hands over her mouth.

“I don't know.””

Evelyn immediately took out her phone.

“I need to contact the attorney handling the trust. Now.””

Before she could dial, footsteps sounded in the hallway.

Dad stood at the bedroom doorway, leaning heavily on his cane. Max walked beside him.

“Richard!”” Evelyn exclaimed, hurrying toward him.

Dad looked at her and gave a tired smile.

“I wondered how long it would take you to come.””

She took his hand.

“I should have come sooner.””

He shook his head.

“No. You came when I needed you.””

Then Dad turned toward me.

“Michael, there's something else about Daniel you need to know.””

His gaze shifted toward Vanessa.

“He didn't come back to sell the house because of his debts.””

Dad paused.

May you like

“He came back because he knows what I kept hidden twelve years ago.””

And for the first time, Evelyn looked genuinely afraid.
