Chapter 7: The Man My Father Never Forgave
The message stayed on the screen.
You found the truth too late. The original documents are already gone.
Nobody spoke.
The computer fan hummed quietly, filling the silence that had swallowed the room.
I stared at those words, trying to understand what they meant.
The original documents were gone.
Not missing.
Not stolen.
Gone.
Someone was confident enough to tell me that.
Someone who knew exactly what we had found.
I slowly turned toward Emily.
“Who sent this?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
Ryan stepped closer to the computer.
“Check the sender.””
I clicked on the message details.
Unknown.
No number.
No email address.
Just a blank account.
Ryan’s face darkened.
“That’s not normal.””
I looked at him.
“You know a lot about this.””
He didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“My father taught me how to hide things.””
The words hit me.
“You said your father was innocent.””
Ryan looked at the paused image on the screen.
“I thought he was.””
He walked closer.
“My whole life, I believed your father destroyed him.””
I looked at the photograph again.
The man beside Emily.
Ryan’s father.
“What was his name?””
Ryan swallowed.
“Michael Carter.””
The room became colder.
Emily looked at him.
“You never told me your full name.””
Ryan gave a bitter smile.
“You never asked.””
I stared at Emily.
“You knew.””
She closed her eyes.
“I knew his last name.””
“And you still brought him here?””
Her voice cracked.
“I didn’t know who he was at first.””
“But you found out.””
“Yes.””
“When?””
She didn’t answer.
I already knew.
“Before today.””
She looked away.
That was confirmation.
I stepped back.
The woman I had shared a home with had been carrying secrets from the beginning.
My father’s warning wasn’t about one betrayal.
It was about a web of them.
Ryan picked up the flash drive.
“Your father knew my father was involved.””
I nodded.
“But he never told you.””
“No.””
“Why?””
I looked at the video still paused on my father’s face.
“Because he was trying to protect me.””
Ryan laughed quietly.
“Or because he didn’t trust anyone.””
That sentence bothered me.
Because part of me wondered if Ryan was right.
My father had spent years hiding things.
From me.
From everyone.
I looked at Emily.
“What happened after my father died?””
She hesitated.
“I started looking for answers.””
“By stealing my documents?””
“I wasn’t trying to hurt you.””
“You broke into my office.””
“I needed proof.””
“Proof of what?””
Her eyes hardened.
“That my father wasn’t responsible.””
I froze.
“Your father?””
She nodded.
“Michael Carter wasn’t the person who stole from your father.””
Ryan looked shocked.
“What?””
Emily looked at him.
“I found out years ago.””
Ryan stepped forward.
“You knew my father was framed?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Emily’s voice became softer.
“Because I needed the documents first.””
Ryan stared at her.
“You used me.””
She didn’t deny it.
I felt something strange.
For the first time, I saw Emily lose control.
Not the confident woman who planned everything.
Not the woman who searched my home.
Just someone trapped by choices she had made.
But sympathy wasn’t enough.
Not anymore.
I walked back to the computer.
“We need to find the original documents.””
Ryan nodded.
“The trust.””
“And the evidence against whoever actually did this.””
Emily looked at me.
“You’re going to believe me now?””
I stared at her.
“No.””
Her face fell.
“I’m going to believe the evidence.””
That was the only thing I had left.
Evidence.
Facts.
Something that couldn’t lie to me.
The three of us searched the house.
Every room.
Every cabinet.
Every hidden place.
Nothing.
Whoever took the documents had been careful.
Then Ryan stopped near the bookshelf in my father’s old office.
“Wait.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He ran his fingers along the wooden frame.
“There’s something here.””
He pressed a small section of the shelf.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside was a second envelope.
My hands shook as I pulled it out.
My father’s handwriting was on it.
But this time, the words weren’t for me.
They were for someone else.
I opened it.
The letter began:
Michael,
If you are reading this, then I failed to stop them.
Ryan moved closer.
His face changed.
“That’s my father’s name.””
I kept reading.
I could feel both of them watching.
My father had written about the company.
About the stolen money.
About the person responsible.
Then I reached the final paragraph.
And my blood ran cold.
Because my father had written:
“The person who destroyed both our families was never Michael Carter.””
I looked up.
Ryan was staring at me.
Emily was holding her breath.
I read the final sentence aloud.
“It was someone we both trusted.””
At that exact moment, the front door opened downstairs.
Someone walked into the house.
A familiar voice called out:
“Daniel?””
My heart stopped.
Because I knew that voice.
May you like
It belonged to someone who should not have been there.
My mother.
