Chapter 3: The Letter My Father Hid
Emily holding my father’s letter felt like watching a stranger touch something sacred.
For years, I had imagined the last things my father wanted to tell me.
After his funeral, I searched through his belongings hoping to find some final message.
A note.
A recording.
Anything.
But there was nothing.
Or at least, that was what I believed.
Now my wife was standing in front of me with a letter that had my name written across it in my father’s handwriting.
“Give it to me,” I said.
Emily tightened her grip.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
“No.””
My voice surprised even me.
It wasn’t loud.
It didn’t need to be.
“Give me the letter.””
Ryan stepped closer.
“Emily, maybe you should stop pretending you’re protecting him.””
She looked at him sharply.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
Ryan laughed bitterly.
“I know exactly what I’m talking about.””
I looked between them.
“Someone explain.””
Neither answered.
That made the silence worse.
Finally, Ryan spoke.
“Your father knew someone would try to take control of the property after he died.””
I frowned.
“My father trusted everyone.””
“No,” Ryan said.
“Your father trusted very few people.””
That sentence hit me.
Because it was true.
My father was kind, but he wasn’t careless.
He had spent thirty years building his company from nothing.
He always told me:
“People show you who they are when they think there’s something to gain.””
I looked at Emily.
She looked down.
And suddenly I remembered all the small things I had ignored.
The questions about my father’s estate.
The way she suddenly became interested in old family documents.
The nights she asked about my passwords.
I had called it curiosity.
I had called it love.
Ryan watched my face change.
“You didn’t know.””
It wasn’t a question.
I didn’t answer.
Emily stepped forward.
“Daniel, there’s more to this.””
I almost laughed.
“More?””
She swallowed.
“Yes.””
I stared at her.
“You brought another man into our house while I was at work. You searched through my father’s documents. You lied to me.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
But I couldn’t tell if they were real.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She looked at Ryan.
Then at the letter.
Then back at me.
“My mother knew your father before he met your mother.””
The room became quiet.
I felt like the floor had shifted beneath me.
“My father was married before?””
Ryan shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“He wasn’t married.””
A cold feeling spread through my chest.
“Then what?””
Ryan looked down.
“He had a relationship he never told anyone about.””
I stared at him.
“You’re saying my father cheated?””
Ryan didn’t answer immediately.
That was enough.
My father had always been my hero.
The man who taught me honesty.
The man who told me never to make promises I couldn’t keep.
And now, everything I thought I knew about him was changing.
Emily finally spoke.
“Your father left money for Ryan.””
I looked at her.
“And?””
“And he also left instructions.””
“What instructions?””
She didn’t respond.
Ryan reached for the letter.
“Open it.””
Emily grabbed his wrist.
“No.””
The two of them stared at each other.
And that was when I understood.
They weren’t partners anymore.
Something had changed.
Ryan pulled away.
“You promised me you only wanted the documents.””
Emily’s face went pale.
“And you promised you wouldn’t tell him.””
My heart sank.
They had made a deal.
A deal involving my family.
My inheritance.
My father’s final wishes.
I grabbed the letter from Emily’s hand before either of them could react.
The envelope tore as I opened it.
Inside was a single page.
I unfolded it slowly.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
My father’s.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, then someone has already tried to take what belongs to you.
I stopped breathing.
The next sentence made my hands shake.
I looked at Emily.
Then at Ryan.
Then back at the letter.
Because my father had written something I never expected.
Something that changed everything.
Ryan was not the only secret he had left behind.

The final line of the letter said:
“Your wife knows exactly why I never trusted her.””
