Chapter 6: The Recording My Father Left Behind
I stared at the flash drive.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
The entire world seemed to shrink down to that tiny piece of plastic sitting in Emily’s hand.
My father had hidden it.
Not in a bank.
Not in a safe deposit box.
Inside the one thing I treasured most.
The pocket watch box.
Because he knew I would protect it.
Because he knew nobody else would think to look there.
Emily looked at me.
“I found it before you did.””
I felt a wave of anger.
“You went through my father’s belongings.””
“I was trying to understand what he knew.””
“You were trying to steal it.””
Her jaw tightened.
“That’s not the whole story.””
I looked at Ryan.
“Do you know what’s on it?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
Emily looked between us.
“I do.””
The answer made my stomach twist.
“You watched it?””
She didn’t respond.
That was enough.
I reached for the flash drive.
She pulled it back.
“Daniel, if you watch this, everything changes.””
I laughed quietly.
“Everything already changed.””
For several seconds, she stared at me.
Then she handed it over.
“Fine.””
I took the flash drive into my office.
The same office where someone had searched through my things.
The same office where my father’s final secret waited.
I connected it to my computer.
There was only one file.
No title.
No date.
Just a video.
I clicked play.
The screen went black.
Then my father appeared.
Older.
Tired.
Sitting behind his desk.
The desk that now sat three feet away from me.
My throat tightened.
“Daniel,” his voice said.
I stopped breathing.
“If you’re watching this, something went wrong.””
I covered my mouth.
Hearing his voice after two years felt impossible.
“I need you to listen carefully.””
My father looked directly into the camera.
“The person you trust most may be the person you should fear.””
I glanced through the office window.
Emily stood in the hallway.
Watching.
My father continued.
“I spent years investigating missing money from my company.””
The screen showed copies of documents.
Bank transfers.
Signatures.
Records.
“I discovered someone was using my name to move funds.””
My father paused.
“And I discovered they were connected to someone inside my home.””
My heart pounded.
Then my father said:
“Emily Carter.””
The room went silent.
Even though the video continued, I couldn’t hear anything for a few seconds.
My father knew.
He knew before I did.
The video continued.
“I do not know whether Emily married my son because she loved him or because she wanted access to my estate.””
My hands shook.
“But I know she has been searching for the evidence I kept hidden.””
The screen changed.
A photograph appeared.
Emily.
Standing beside another person.
A man I didn’t recognize.
My father’s voice continued.
“This man helped her enter my company records.””
Ryan stepped closer.
“Who is that?””
I paused the video.
The picture remained on screen.
Emily younger.
Standing beside a man wearing a company badge.
I looked at her.
Her face had lost all color.
“Who is he?””
She didn’t answer.
Ryan looked at the picture.
Then his eyes widened.
“No.””
I turned toward him.
“What?””
Ryan stepped closer to the screen.
“That’s impossible.””
“Who is he?””
Ryan looked at me.
His voice barely came out.
“That’s my father.””
The room went completely silent.
The man my father accused.
The man connected to Emily.
The man Ryan had spent his entire life believing was innocent.
I looked back at Emily.
“You knew.””
She whispered:
“Daniel…”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“You knew exactly who Ryan was.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I didn’t know at first.””
“At first?””
She looked down.
Then my computer made a sound.
A new message appeared.
Not from the video.
From an unknown sender.
One sentence.
May you like
One sentence that made all of us freeze.
*You found the truth too late. The original documents are already gone.*
