Chapter 4: The Woman My Father Warned Me About
The words on the page blurred.
Your wife knows exactly why I never trusted her.
I read that sentence again.
And again.
Each time, it felt less like ink on paper and more like a knife being pushed deeper.
My father was gone.
He couldn’t explain.
He couldn’t defend himself.
And the one person who should have been standing beside me was standing across the room, silently watching me discover a truth she had hidden.
I looked at Emily.
“How long?””
Her face tightened.
“Daniel…”
“How long have you known about this?””
She looked away.
That was all the answer I needed.
Ryan folded his arms.
“I told you he deserved to know.””
Emily turned toward him.
“You don’t get to act like you’re innocent.””
A bitter laugh escaped him.
“Neither do you.””
I held up the letter.
“Enough.””
My voice echoed through the kitchen.
Both of them stopped.
I looked at Emily.
“Start talking.””
She wiped under her eyes.
“I didn’t want it to happen this way.””
“That’s your explanation?””
“No.””
She took a step toward me.
“I made mistakes.””
“Mistakes?””
I looked around the kitchen.
The gloves.
The open document box.
The missing papers.
“You brought him into our home.””
She lowered her head.
“I was trying to protect myself.””
The sentence almost made me laugh.
“From what?””
She hesitated.
And that hesitation made my anger turn into something colder.
“From what, Emily?””
She looked at Ryan.
Then back at me.
“From losing everything.””
The room went silent.
I stared at her.
“You were afraid of losing my inheritance?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“That’s not what I meant.””
“Then what did you mean?””
She didn’t answer.
Ryan stepped forward.
“She knew about the land before you did.””
I looked at him.
“How?””
He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.
“She contacted me six months ago.””
Emily’s expression changed.
“Ryan.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I’m done covering for you.””
He unlocked his phone and handed it to me.
There were messages.
Between Emily and Ryan.
My hands felt numb as I scrolled.
Emily had asked questions about my father.
About the property.
About the trust.
One message caught my attention.
Emily:
Daniel doesn’t know the real value of the land. We need the original documents before anyone else finds them.
I looked up.
“You wrote this?””
She didn’t deny it.
“Daniel, listen—”
“No.””
I placed the phone on the table.
“I want to understand something.””
My voice became quiet.
“Did you ever love me?””
The question seemed to hurt her more than anything else.
Her lips parted.
But no words came.
That silence was worse than an answer.
I walked into my office.
The safe was still open.
My personal files had been moved.
Someone had searched through everything.
But then I noticed something strange.
The trust document wasn’t the only thing missing.
A small wooden box was gone too.
A box my father gave me when I turned eighteen.
Inside was a pocket watch.
His pocket watch.
The only thing I had left that belonged to him.
I turned around slowly.
“Where is it?””
Emily looked confused.
“What?””
“The wooden box.””
Her expression changed.
Just slightly.
But I saw it.
“You took it.””
“No.””
“You know where it is.””
She shook her head.
“I don’t.””
Ryan looked at her.
And for the first time, he seemed uncertain.
“Emily?””
She looked angry.
“Why are you looking at me like that?””
“Because I thought we were only taking documents.””
The way he said it told me everything.
There were things happening behind my back that even Ryan didn’t know.
I stepped closer.
“What else did you take?””
Emily said nothing.
Then my phone rang.
The sound cut through the room.
I looked down.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then an older man’s voice spoke.
“Daniel?””
I froze.
Because I recognized that voice.
Not from memory.
From recordings.
My father’s old voicemail messages.
“Who is this?””
The man breathed heavily.
“You don’t know me, but I knew your father.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Who are you?””
A pause.
Then he said:
“I’m the person your father trusted to protect you from your wife.””
I looked at Emily.
Her face had gone completely white.
And the man continued:
“Daniel, you need to leave that house immediately.””
“Why?””
The answer came softly.
“Because Emily isn’t looking for your father’s money.””
May you like
A pause.
“She’s looking for the evidence that can destroy him.””
