Chapter 8: The House Where My Daughter Was Supposed to Disappear
The judge ordered the hearing suspended while the attorneys addressed the new information.
Jonathan requested that the relevant authorities be notified about the potential risk to Sophie. Judge Harrison directed the appropriate officials to assess the situation and instructed both parties not to remove the child from the agreed safe arrangement without further legal direction.
I called Emily from the courthouse corridor.
“Keep Sophie inside,” I told her.
“Lock the doors, and don't answer anyone you don't recognize.””
“What happened?”” she asked.
“Vanessa's father is involved. His name is Richard Cross. Someone may be coming for Sophie.””
Emily's voice sharpened.
“Is she safe?””
“She is right now. Please stay with her until I get there.””
“I will. Michael, hurry.””
Rebecca joined me a moment later.
“We have to be careful,” she said.
“We can't simply drive to that address and confront Richard. The court has been notified, and the appropriate authorities need to handle any immediate safety concerns.””
“I can't sit here while my daughter is in danger.””
“You won't be sitting here. But you must not turn this into a confrontation that puts you or Sophie at greater risk.””
Jonathan came out of the courtroom carrying a copy of the trust notice.
“We've contacted the relevant authorities,” he said.
“The address Vanessa provided is being checked. Until we know more, stay with us and follow the safety plan.””
I forced myself to nod.
For the first time in my life, waiting felt unbearable.
At 11:35, Emily called.
“Michael, a black SUV just drove past my building twice.””
My pulse accelerated.
“Did it stop?””
“Not yet. But there are two men inside. They were looking up at the windows.””
“Get Sophie away from the windows. Don't approach them.””
“I've already taken her into the back bedroom.””
I looked at Rebecca.
She immediately relayed the information to the officials handling the situation.
Emily stayed on the phone with me.
“Sophie wants to talk to you.””
“Put her on.””
A few seconds later, I heard my daughter's small voice.
“Daddy?””
“Hi, sweetheart.””
“Are you coming home?””
“As soon as I can.””
“Mommy said Grandpa Richard was going to take me on a special trip.””
I closed my eyes.
“Did you ever meet Grandpa Richard?””
“No.””
“Did Mommy tell you what the trip was for?””
Sophie was quiet.
Then she whispered, “She said I had to stay in a house with a yellow door until you stopped being angry.””
My chest tightened.
“Baby, I'm not angry with you. Not now, not ever.””
“She said you wouldn't come because you didn't want me anymore.””
I struggled to keep my voice steady.
“That isn't true. I love you more than anything.””
“Promise?””
“I promise.””
Emily came back on the line.
“She needs to rest. I'll call you if anything changes.””
I thanked her and ended the call.
At noon, Rebecca received an update from the officials investigating the address. They had located the property and were assessing the circumstances.
The house stood on a quiet road outside Atlanta. According to the initial information, it had been rented through a company connected to Daniel Cross.
No one could yet confirm who was inside.
Then Rebecca's phone rang again.
She listened without speaking, her expression growing darker.
When she hung up, she turned to me.
“They found the SUV near the property.””
“Who was inside?””
“Two men. One of them gave a statement saying he was waiting for instructions from Richard Cross.””
I stood.
“Where is Richard?””
“We don't know yet.””
“Did they find the room?””
Rebecca nodded slowly.
“The officials located a child's bedroom. There were clothes, toys, and a suitcase. They also found a folder containing copies of Sophie's medical information and the custody petition.””
My stomach turned.
“Anything else?””
Rebecca hesitated.
“A printed travel itinerary.””
“Where was Sophie supposed to go?””
“Savannah.””
The name struck me like a blow.
Savannah was where Claire Bennett had died. It was where my father had apparently hidden secrets for years. And it was where Richard Cross wanted to take my daughter.
“Why Savannah?”” I asked.
“That's what we're trying to establish.””
At 1:15 p.m., Daniel Cross was escorted into a separate interview room at the courthouse. He had stopped pretending to be calm.
His attorney emerged twenty minutes later and approached Rebecca.
“Mr. Cross is willing to clarify several matters,” he said.
“But he wants assurances that his cooperation won't automatically be treated as an admission of wrongdoing.””
Rebecca folded her arms.
“That's a discussion for the appropriate authorities. What is he offering?””
“A full account of Richard Cross's involvement.””
I felt my pulse quicken.
“Then let him talk.””
The attorney looked at me.
“Mr. Mercer, this may involve your father.””
“Everything seems to involve my father.””
He lowered his voice.
“Daniel says Richard believes your father took something from him before he died. Something connected to the trust.””
“What did he take?””
“A set of original documents.””
Rebecca and I exchanged a glance.
“Which documents?”” she asked.
“The original trust amendment and a sealed letter written by Claire Bennett.””
I remembered the brown envelope David had brought the previous night.
“Does Daniel know where they are?””
“He claims Richard believes they were hidden among your father's personal belongings.””
My mouth went dry.
Dad's house had been sold months ago, but I still kept several boxes of his papers in my garage.
If the documents existed, they might explain why Richard had targeted Sophie.
Then Daniel's attorney delivered another revelation.
“Daniel also says Richard believes the letter proves Sophie is not the only child entitled to the trust.””
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
“He wouldn't elaborate without a formal interview.””
I turned to Rebecca.
“We need those documents.””
“We'll arrange a lawful review of your father's records,” she said.
“But first, we need to make sure Sophie is safe.””
At 2:40 p.m., the officials confirmed that the property had been secured for further investigation. Richard Cross was not there.
Neither was the person who had arranged the travel itinerary.
A search of the property revealed a handwritten note tucked inside the child's suitcase.
It contained a date, a time, and a short instruction.
*When the father comes looking, tell him the girl has already been returned to her real family.*
I read the words twice.
Returned?
Sophie had never lived with anyone but Vanessa and me.
I called David.
“Do you remember anything else Dad said about Claire's daughter?””
David was quiet for a moment.
“He once told me Claire had given birth to twins.””
I stopped breathing.
“Twins?””
“Yes. He said one child was placed with a relative, and the other disappeared from the records after Claire died.””
My mind raced.
“Do you know who adopted them?””
“No. But Dad said he never stopped looking for the second child.””
I stared at the note.
The girl had already been returned to her real family.
The words weren't describing Sophie.
They were describing someone else.
May you like
And if David was right, there had been another child connected to Claire Bennett all along.
A child Richard Cross might still be searching for.
