Chapter 12: The Woman Who Knew the Truth
Vanessa arrived at Rebecca's office at three o'clock, accompanied by her attorney.
She looked exhausted. Her hair was pulled into a loose bun, and the silver necklace I had bought her hung crookedly against her collar.
For a moment, I remembered the woman who had sat beside me in a hospital room five years earlier, holding newborn Sophie against her chest.
Then I remembered the garden hose.
I remained seated.
“Tell me why you did it.””
Vanessa lowered herself into the chair opposite me.
“I know you hate me.””
“That isn't an answer.””
“I didn't intend for Sophie to be hurt.””
“You intended to frighten her. You photographed her. You told her I would stop loving her if she spoke. You helped prepare false allegations against me.””
Tears gathered in her eyes.
“I know.””
“Then explain.””
Rebecca sat beside me while Vanessa's attorney remained near the door.
Vanessa folded her hands.
“Richard contacted me six months ago. He said he wanted to meet Sophie.””
“Why?””
“He claimed he was dying.””
I stared at her.
“Is he?””
“I don't know. He told me his doctors had given him less than a year.””
“And you believed him?””
“I wanted to. He's my father.””
“You've spent our entire marriage hiding him from me.””
“Because he told me you would never understand.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You didn't give me the chance.””
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
“When I was young, Richard controlled everything. He chose where I went to school, who I spoke to, what I wore. After Claire died, he became obsessed with the children and the trust.””
“Why was Claire important to him?””
“She was his daughter, too. But she refused to let him control her life. She wanted her children to grow up without knowing about the money.””
Rebecca leaned forward.
“What happened to Claire?””
Vanessa looked down.
“I don't know everything. I was twenty-one. I remember Dad calling me late one night and telling me there had been an accident in Savannah. He said Claire was dead and that I needed to help him protect the children.””
“Protect them how?”” I asked.
“He told me one child had already been placed with a trusted family. The other needed somewhere safe.””
“Did you take one of the children?””
Vanessa began crying.
“Yes.””
I felt the room tilt.
“Which one?””
“Sophie Bennett. The baby who later became my niece in the family records.””
“Your niece?””
“Claire was my half-sister. Richard was my biological father, but my mother had never told me the full story until after Claire died.””
I tried to make sense of it.
“Where did you take the baby?””
“To a family friend. I thought it was temporary. But when I returned months later, the child was gone.””
“Gone where?””
“I never found out.””
Rebecca exchanged a glance with her attorney.
“Did you ever see the other twin?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No. Richard told me Samuel had been placed with someone who could protect him. Years later, I learned that Thomas Mercer had been involved.””
I looked at David's empty chair beside me. He had stayed away from the meeting, unwilling to face Vanessa until he knew what the documents meant.
“Why did you marry me?”” I asked.
Vanessa looked up sharply.
“Because I loved you.””
“Did you know who I was when we met?””
She hesitated.
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Vanessa.””
“Yes,” she whispered.
“I knew your last name. I knew your father had worked with Richard. But I didn't know everything.””
“Did you marry me to get access to the trust?””
“No.””
“Then why did you hide all of this?””
“Because I thought if I told you, you'd leave. And because Richard said the trust would be destroyed if the family secrets became public.””
I leaned back.
“You were willing to risk our daughter to protect a trust?””
“No.”” She shook her head desperately.
“I was trying to secure her future.””
“By making her believe I didn't love her?””
Vanessa covered her face.
For several seconds, all I could hear was the hum of the air conditioner.
Then Rebecca asked, “What exactly did Daniel tell you to do?””
Vanessa lowered her hands.
“He said Richard wanted Sophie placed in a temporary residence until the trust dispute was settled. He told me that if I filed an emergency petition, the court would restrict Michael's access while the allegations were investigated.””
“And the photographs?””
“He said they would support the claim that Sophie was being harmed.””
“You deliberately created the circumstances shown in those photographs,” Rebecca said.
Vanessa nodded.
“I thought the injury would be minor. Daniel said the pictures needed to look convincing. I was supposed to wet Sophie's clothes and make her appear frightened.””
My hands clenched beneath the table.
“And when she fell?””
“I panicked.””
“You kept spraying her.””
“I know.””
“You could have killed her.””
Vanessa broke down completely.
“I know!””
Her attorney put a hand on her shoulder, but she pushed it away.
“I know what I did, Michael. I hear her crying every time I close my eyes.””
I wanted to believe she felt remorse.
But remorse couldn't erase what had happened.
Rebecca asked the next question.
“Who is the man who arranged the residence?””
“Richard's associate. His name is Peter Lang.””
I exchanged a glance with Rebecca.
Peter had visited my father's house the previous day, claiming to represent the trustee.
“Is Peter working for Richard?””
Vanessa nodded.
“He's been helping Richard locate the original trust documents.””
“Why?””
“Because the original documents contain a clause that gives Sophie independent control of the protective trust when she reaches adulthood. Richard cannot manage that money himself.””
“And what does he gain by taking her?””
Vanessa's voice dropped.
“If he establishes himself as the person responsible for her welfare, he believes he can challenge the clause and appoint someone loyal to him as trustee.””
Rebecca's expression hardened.
“That's a serious allegation. Do you have evidence?””
Vanessa reached into her handbag and removed a small flash drive.
“Daniel sent me copies of the emails. I saved them because I was afraid he would blame everything on me.””
She placed the drive on the table.
“There's also a recording of Richard discussing what he wants to do with Sophie.””
I stared at the device.
“What does he say?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“He says once Sophie is under his control, he can force the trustee to release the money. He says Michael will never be able to stop him.””
Rebecca took possession of the drive and documented the handover for review.
Vanessa looked at me.
“I'll cooperate. I'll tell the court everything.””
I stood.
“Cooperating doesn't mean you'll get to take Sophie home.””
“I know.””
“You won't be alone with her until the professionals say it's safe.””
She nodded, crying silently.
At the door, she stopped.
“Michael, there's one more thing.””
I didn't turn around.
“What?””
“Richard didn't choose Sophie because she's the only beneficiary.””
I looked at her.
“What do you mean?””
Vanessa's face had gone pale.
“The trust has another condition. If Sophie has a living sibling descended from Claire Bennett, the two children must be protected together.””
I felt a chill crawl up my spine.
“Sophie doesn't have a sibling.””
Vanessa stared at me.
“That's what Richard wants you to believe.””
She opened her handbag and removed a photograph.
It showed two young children standing beside Claire Bennett in a hospital garden. One was a baby boy. The other was a little girl, perhaps four years old.
On the back was a name.
*Evelyn Brooks.*
Vanessa's voice trembled.
“Evelyn didn't just help hide Samuel. She raised the other child.””
I stared at the photograph.
David had been searching for Evelyn Brooks for years.
And now I understood why.
The woman who knew the truth about the missing children wasn't merely a witness.
She was the person who had raised the girl Richard Cross had spent decades trying to find.
Vanessa looked directly at me.
“Michael, if Richard discovers where Evelyn is, he'll go after her next.””
Then my phone rang.
The caller ID displayed an unfamiliar number.
I answered.
A frightened woman's voice whispered, “Mr. Mercer? My name is Evelyn Brooks. I have your father's original letter.””
A loud crash sounded in the background.
She gasped.

Then she said three words before the call abruptly ended.
“*He's found us.*”
