Chapter 4: The Man at My Front Door
“Vanessa, we have a problem. The plan has changed.””
Daniel Cross's voice carried through the front door.
My wife stared at me, her face drained of color. For the first time since I had known her, she looked less like a woman caught in a lie and more like someone terrified of the person standing outside.
I slipped my phone into my pocket.
“Go ahead,” I said.
“Open the door.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Michael, please. You don't understand what's happening.””
“Then explain it.””
She glanced at the hallway.
“Not here.””
“Why? Is your attorney afraid I'll hear something?””
Three sharp knocks interrupted us.
“Vanessa!”” Daniel called again.
“Open the damn door.””
I walked toward the entrance before she could stop me.
When I opened it, Daniel stood on the porch wearing a charcoal suit and holding the same black leather folder I had seen in Robert's footage. His expression changed when he saw me.
“Michael,” he said carefully.
“I wasn't expecting you to be home.””
“Funny. I wasn't expecting to find you planning to take my daughter away.””
Daniel's eyes flicked toward Vanessa.
She stood behind me, twisting her wedding ring around her finger.
“Let's not make accusations,” Daniel said.
“We're all adults here.””
“You were on my property while my five-year-old was bleeding. You handed my wife custody documents. What exactly should I call that?””
He straightened his jacket.
“I was providing legal assistance. Your wife expressed concerns about the safety of your household.””
“My household?””
“Yes.””
I stepped aside, allowing him to see the photograph still displayed on my phone.
“Then perhaps you can explain this.””
His eyes landed on the image of the unfamiliar bedroom.
For a split second, his composure cracked.
“Where did you get that?””
“That's not an answer.””
Daniel reached for his phone.
“I think this conversation would be better handled through counsel.””
“Excellent. My attorney will be delighted to speak with you. In fact, she's already seen the security footage.””
That stopped him.
Vanessa moved forward.
“You showed him the footage?””
“I didn't show him anything,” I said.
“Robert did.””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“You've made a serious mistake, Michael.””
“Is that a threat?””
“No. It's advice. You have a child, a business, and a reputation. You should consider what happens when private family matters become public.””
I looked him directly in the eyes.
“Are you threatening to destroy my reputation because I caught you helping my wife?””
“I'm warning you that accusations can damage everyone involved.””
“Then let's make sure the evidence speaks for itself.””
I started closing the door.
Daniel put his hand against it.
“Wait. Vanessa, we need to talk.””
“Not here,” she whispered.
He looked at her with open contempt.
“You told me everything was under control.””
“I said I'd handle it.””
“And now your husband has the video.””
I stared at them.
There it was. Not a denial. Not even an attempt to pretend the footage was innocent.
They were discussing their plan as though I weren't standing between them.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“You need to remember what's at stake. If this falls apart, you lose everything.””
Vanessa flinched.
“Stop talking.””
He ignored her.
“You signed the documents. You agreed to the arrangement. You don't get to change your mind because things became uncomfortable.””
“What arrangement?”” I demanded.
Daniel stepped back.
“Ask your wife.””
He turned and walked toward his car.
Before getting inside, he looked over his shoulder.
“One more thing, Michael. If I were you, I wouldn't assume that video is going to save you.””
Then he drove away.
I shut the door and turned to Vanessa.
“What arrangement?””
She walked toward the kitchen without answering.
“Vanessa.””
She stopped beside the island.
“You need to calm down.””
I laughed once, without humor.
“My daughter needed stitches today. A man I barely know is threatening me on my own porch. Someone has prepared a bedroom for Sophie at an address I don't recognize. And you're telling me to calm down?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“I was trying to protect her.””
“From what?””
“From you.””
The words landed between us.
For a moment, neither of us moved.
Then I asked, “Have I ever hurt Sophie?””
Vanessa looked away.
“Have I ever threatened her?””
“It's not that simple.””
“Answer me.””
She wiped her cheeks.
“No.””
“Then why are you accusing me?””
Her expression hardened again.
“Because you don't listen. You think money gives you the right to make every decision. You decide where we live, what we buy, when we travel. Everyone thinks you're wonderful because you provide for us.””
“That isn't an answer.””
“You never see what happens when you're gone!””
“I was gone for work. Not because I didn't care about my family.””
She grabbed her purse.
“I can't do this tonight.””
“Where are you going?””
“Somewhere I can think.””
I stepped away from the doorway.
“Go. But Sophie is staying with Emily until the police and our attorneys have sorted this out.””
Vanessa stopped dead.
“You cannot keep my daughter from me.””
“I'm not keeping her from you. I'm protecting her while we figure out what happened.””
“You don't get to decide that!””
“And neither do you.””
She stared at me with a hatred so sudden and raw that I barely recognized her.
Then she leaned closer.
“You have no idea what I've already set in motion.””
She stormed upstairs.
I remained in the kitchen, listening to drawers open and close.
A few minutes later, she came down carrying a small overnight bag.
At the front door, she turned back.
“Michael, when the truth comes out, you'll wish you'd trusted me.””
I watched her leave.
The moment her car disappeared down the street, I called Rebecca.
She answered immediately.
“Tell me you didn't confront her.””
“I did. Daniel showed up, and I caught them discussing the plan.””
Rebecca sighed.
“Michael, I need you to listen carefully. Don't threaten Vanessa, don't enter any property you don't own, and don't try to resolve this privately. We're dealing with allegations that could have serious legal consequences.””
“What about the bedroom? Someone has prepared a place for Sophie.””
“Send me the photograph. I'll have my colleague determine what lawful steps we can take to identify the location.””
I forwarded the image.
Then Rebecca said something that chilled me.
“There's one more thing. I checked the public court docket using the information you gave me. A request has been submitted for an emergency hearing tomorrow morning.””
“Already?””
“Yes. And Michael, the filing contains a sworn statement claiming Sophie is afraid to be alone with you.””
I closed my eyes.
My daughter had been crying in my arms that afternoon, begging me not to answer her mother's calls.
Now someone was preparing to use her fear against me.
“Can they take her tomorrow?”” I asked.
“I can't promise what a judge will decide. We need the complete filing, the original video, and evidence of what happened today.””
I looked toward the dark patio.
The faint stain between the bricks was still visible.
“Then we'll get it.””
After we hung up, I returned to the kitchen to collect my keys.
A small envelope lay beneath the chair where Vanessa had been sitting.
My name was written across it in her handwriting.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
It read:
If you want to know why Daniel is involved, ask your father what happened in Savannah in 2019.
I read it twice.
Then I turned the page over, hoping there would be an explanation.

Instead, I found a second sentence.
He knows why Sophie was never supposed to be born.
