Chapter 9: The Price of a Mother's Silence
Melissa arrived at David's office twenty minutes later, escorted by a police officer.
Her face was pale, and her hair hung loose around her shoulders. She carried a folder pressed against her chest as though it were the only thing keeping her upright.
“Where are my daughters?”” she demanded.
No one answered immediately.
The officer explained that investigators were tracing the photograph and attempting to locate the vehicle. Melissa sank into a chair.
“I should never have listened to him,” she whispered.
I stood across the room.
“No. You shouldn't have.””
She looked up at me, tears spilling down her cheeks.
“I know you hate me.””
“This isn't about whether I hate you.””
“Then what is it about?””
“Your daughters are missing. Caleb has been threatened. My wife may have spent four years hiding because of what Daniel did.
We need facts, Melissa. Not excuses.””
She lowered her head.
For several seconds, the only sound was the ticking clock above David's desk.
Then she opened the folder.
“I brought everything.””
Inside were bank statements, printed emails, and a small notebook with Melissa's handwriting across the pages.
David took the documents and began sorting them.
“Where did you get these?”” he asked.
“Daniel gave me copies of the guardianship paperwork. I kept the emails because I was afraid he'd deny everything if something went wrong.””
“Why didn't you bring them to us sooner?””
Melissa looked at me.
“Because I was part of it.””
The admission hung in the room.
She took a shaky breath.
“When Daniel approached me, he told me Michael was vulnerable. He said Caleb needed a mother figure, and that I could build a stable family with him.””
I stared at her.
“Did you know about Emily?””
“Not at first. I learned about the investigation after we married. Daniel showed me documents suggesting Emily had been involved in financial fraud. He said she'd abandoned Caleb and that she might return to take him away.””
“And you believed him?””
“I wanted to believe him.””
“Why?””
She looked down at her hands.
“Because I was afraid you'd never love me as much as you loved Emily. Because I wanted my daughters to have a secure home. Because Daniel kept telling me that if Emily came back, everything I'd built would disappear.””
Her voice cracked.
“So I started treating Caleb like a problem I needed to manage.””
I felt sick.
“You didn't manage a problem. You hurt a child.””
“I know.””
“Do you?””
She looked at me, and for the first time, she didn't try to defend herself.
“Yes.””
David interrupted gently.
“Melissa, we need to focus on the documents. Is there anything here that could help us locate Brooke and Lily?””
She flipped through the notebook.
“Daniel used a storage facility outside Savannah. He told me he kept files there because he didn't want them at his house.””
“Do you know the address?””
She found a page near the back and pointed to a handwritten location.
David immediately passed it to the officer.
“We'll send this to the investigators. Do not contact Daniel.””
Melissa nodded.
Then she turned to me.
“There's something else. I think I know why he wanted Caleb's trust.””
I waited.
“Daniel said Emily discovered that money was being moved through accounts belonging to people who had died or disappeared. Some accounts were connected to children whose parents had lost custody.””
David's expression hardened.
“Did he provide any evidence?””
“Only partial statements. He said the money was being held until the children became adults, but I saw transfers going to private companies.””
“Did you recognize any of the companies?””
She handed David another page.
He examined it carefully.
One company name appeared beside several large transfers.
Carter Family Holdings.
My company.
I stepped back.
“That can't be right.””
Melissa shook her head.
“Daniel told me the company had been used without your knowledge. He said Emily discovered the connection before she disappeared.””
David reviewed the statement.
“These records need independent verification. A company name alone doesn't establish that Michael was involved.””
“Of course I wasn't involved,” I said.
“I've never seen this account.””
“I believe you,” David replied.
“But we need to trace the transfers and determine who controlled them.””
The officer's phone rang.
He stepped into the hallway, spoke briefly, then returned.
“We've located the vehicle from the photograph. It was seen near a storage facility outside Savannah, but it has since left the area. Investigators are checking nearby cameras.””
Melissa pressed both hands over her mouth.
“Are my girls alive?””
“We have no evidence that they've been harmed,” the officer said.
“We're treating this as an urgent missing-person investigation.””
I wanted to comfort her, but every time I looked at her, I saw Caleb's empty lunchbox.
I couldn't pretend we were on the same side simply because we now feared the same man.
David continued reviewing the notebook.
“Melissa, what is this entry?””
She leaned forward.
The page contained a date, a bank reference, and a handwritten note:
*Final transfer—after the mother returns.*
Below it was another line.
*The boy's signature is required.*
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
Melissa shook her head.
“I don't know.””
David tapped the page.
“Did Daniel ever mention a meeting where Caleb would be required to sign something?””
“Yes. He said there was a final document that would temporarily place Caleb's trust under the control of a court-appointed guardian.””
“And who was supposed to be that guardian?””
“Jason. My brother.””
I stared at her.
“Did Jason know?””
“I don't think so. Daniel told me he'd already spoken to him, but I never heard them discuss it.””
“Then we need to contact Jason.””
Melissa nodded and called her brother on speakerphone.
Jason answered after several rings.
“Melissa? What's going on?””
“Jason, did Daniel Reeves ask you to become Caleb's guardian?””
Silence.
Then Jason said, “He told me it was a temporary arrangement. He said Michael was under investigation and that the boy needed somewhere stable to stay.””
“Did you agree?””
“I signed an acknowledgment that I'd be willing to help if the court requested it. I didn't sign a guardianship order.””
David leaned toward the phone.
“Mr. Carter's attorney speaking. Did Daniel explain the financial implications?””
“No. He said there might be school expenses and medical bills. I thought I was helping a child.””
“Do you have a copy of what you signed?””
“Yes. I kept it because the language seemed strange.””
“Please preserve it and send it to the authorities.””
Jason's voice grew anxious.
“Melissa, where are Brooke and Lily?””
“We don't know.””
“Oh, God.””
“Jason, did Daniel ever mention a storage facility in Savannah?””
Another pause.
“Yes. He asked me to pick up an envelope there last week. I refused because I didn't know what was inside.””
“Do you still have the address?””
“I can find it.””
David asked him to send it directly to the investigating officer.
When the call ended, Melissa looked as though she might collapse.
“I didn't know he would take my girls.””
I held her gaze.
“But you knew he was using my son.””
She nodded, crying silently.
“I did.””
For a moment, I saw the woman I'd married—the woman who had once helped Caleb build a blanket fort and read him bedtime stories. I wondered whether any of that had been genuine.
Then I remembered the recording.
Remember, nobody believes children who tell lies.
I looked away.
The officer returned with another update.
A surveillance camera near the storage facility had captured Daniel entering the property that morning. He'd left carrying a large envelope and had driven toward a private airfield outside Savannah.
The investigators were moving quickly, but they still had no confirmed location for the girls.
My phone rang.
Sarah.
“Michael,” she said, breathless, “I found something in Emily's old correspondence. A message she sent me before she disappeared.””
“What does it say?””
“She wrote that if Daniel ever tried to use Caleb's trust, the only person who could expose the entire scheme was the woman who signed the original transfer authorization.””
“Dr. Morris?””
“No. Someone else.””
My pulse quickened.
“Who?””
Sarah hesitated.
“Emily called her the second mother. She said this woman had raised Daniel Reeves's younger sister after their own mother died.””
I looked at David.
He was already listening.
“Sarah, do you know her name?””
“Yes,” she whispered.
“It's Evelyn Reeves.””
The room fell silent.
“Daniel's mother?”” I asked.
“His adoptive mother,” Sarah corrected.
“And according to Emily, she's the one who knows where the missing hospital records are hidden.””
Before I could ask another question, Sarah's voice broke.
“Michael, there's something else. Evelyn contacted me ten minutes ago. She says Emily is alive, and she's ready to tell the truth.””
I gripped the phone.
“Where is she?””
Sarah gave me an address in Savannah.
May you like
Then she whispered the words that made my blood run cold.
“She's at the same place where Daniel is holding your daughters.””
