Chapter 2: The Woman Behind the Camera
The first recording showed Melissa packing lunches the previous morning.
I watched in silence as she prepared the girls' food with the same careful attention I'd witnessed minutes earlier. She sliced strawberries, wrapped sandwiches, and tucked small notes beneath the lids.
Then she picked up Caleb's lunchbox.
This time, she filled it with a ham sandwich, apple slices, and two crackers.
For one brief second, relief flickered through me.
Then Melissa glanced toward the hallway.
She removed every piece of food, dropped it into the trash, and wiped the inside of the lunchbox with a paper towel.
Finally, she placed a single napkin inside and zipped it shut.
My hand tightened around the phone.
Beside me, Caleb stared at the floor.
“Did she do this yesterday, too?”” I asked.
He nodded without looking up.
“And the day before?””
Another nod.
“How long, buddy?””
He whispered, “I don't know.””
Melissa snatched a dish towel from the counter.
“This is ridiculous. You're taking a few seconds of video and inventing a crime.””
I ignored her and kept watching.
The recording continued.
Melissa crouched beside Caleb, who was sitting at the kitchen table with his schoolbag between his feet. She placed one finger against her lips.
“Remember what we discussed?”” she asked him.
Caleb nodded.
“If Daddy asks about your lunch, what do you say?””
“That I ate at school.””
“Good. And if you tell him anything else?””
Caleb's little shoulders rose toward his ears.
“You'll be disappointed in me.””
Melissa shook her head.
“No, sweetheart. I'll make sure Daddy understands that you have a problem with lying. Nobody believes children who tell lies.””
The video ended.
For several seconds, I couldn't move.
Then I looked at the woman standing across from me.
“You said you loved him.””
“I do love him.””
“Then explain that recording.””
Melissa dropped the dish towel.
“He's difficult, Michael. He asks for attention constantly. Everything has to be about Caleb because you can't stop feeling guilty about Emily.””
The mention of my first wife hit like a slap.
“Don't bring Emily into this.””
“Why not?”” Melissa demanded.
“She died, and somehow I'm still competing with a ghost. Every time Caleb cries, you rush to rescue him. Every time Brooke or Lily needs something, you tell them to be patient because Caleb has been through so much.””
Brooke pushed her chair back.
“That's not true.””
Melissa turned on her.
“Stay out of this.””
“But it is true,” Brooke said, her voice shaking.
“You tell us Caleb is the reason we can't have nice things anymore.””
Lily wiped her cheeks with both hands.
“You told us his mommy left because she didn't want him.””
Caleb went completely still.
I felt him stiffen against my side.
I lowered the phone.
“What did you just say?””
Lily looked at her mother, terrified.
Melissa stepped toward her youngest daughter.
“Lily, sweetheart, you misunderstood.””
“No, I didn't!”” Lily cried.
“You showed us the picture and said his mommy was a bad woman. You said Daddy only kept Caleb because he felt sorry for him.””
My son pulled away from me.
He walked toward the kitchen table and sat down in the chair closest to the wall, curling his arms around his stomach.
“Caleb,” I said softly.
He shook his head.
“It's okay, buddy.””
“No, Daddy.”” His voice was barely audible.
“Maybe Mommy Emily didn't want me.””
Something inside me broke.
I knelt beside him and took both his hands.
“Listen to me. Your mother loved you more than anything in this world. She loved you before you were born, every day you were alive, and every second she had with you. Nothing Melissa says can ever change that.””
Caleb searched my face.
“Then why does Mommy Melissa hate me?””
I had no answer that wouldn't make the truth hurt even more.
Behind us, Melissa began pacing.
“This is exactly what I mean. You're letting him manipulate you.””
I stood.
“He's eight years old.””
“And I'm the only person who has to manage this household while you're at work!””
“By withholding his food?””
“I never starved him!””
I held up the phone.
“The recording says otherwise.””
Her eyes darted toward the screen.
For a moment, she seemed to consider grabbing it. Then she forced herself to smile.
“Fine. Believe whatever you want. But you should know that school staff have already raised concerns about Caleb's weight. If you start accusing me of abuse, they'll ask why you didn't notice sooner.””
The threat landed with deliberate precision.
She knew my deepest fear: that I had failed the promise I'd made to Emily.
I looked at Caleb's thin wrists, the sleeves of his sweatshirt hanging loosely around them.
“How long has he been losing weight?””
Melissa shrugged.
“Months, maybe. He's a picky eater.””
“And you didn't tell me?””
“You're always working.””
I turned back to the camera recordings.
There were dozens of files.
I opened one from the previous Friday.
The timestamp read 4:37 p.m.
Melissa sat at the kitchen island, scrolling through her phone. Brooke and Lily were upstairs. Caleb sat alone at the table, picking at a dry piece of toast.
Melissa placed a call on speakerphone.
A man's voice came through the device.
“Did you do it?””
Melissa lowered her voice.
“Yes. The school contacted us about his weight loss. They're starting to ask questions.””
“Good,” the man replied.
“That gives us leverage.””
My stomach tightened.
Melissa glanced toward Caleb.
“Michael still thinks he's just being picky. Once the school decides he's an unfit father, the custody complaint should be easier.””
The man chuckled.
“And the boy?””
“He'll be fine. He's too scared to say anything.””
I paused the video.
My pulse hammered against my ears.
Melissa's face had gone white.
I turned toward her slowly.
“Who was that man?””
She didn't answer.
“Melissa. Who were you talking to?””
She grabbed her purse.
“I have to take the girls to school.””
“You're not going anywhere until you tell me what's happening.””
“Get out of my way, Michael.””
I stepped aside only when Brooke moved toward me, crying.
“Dad,” she whispered, “please don't let Mom take Caleb away.””
I stared at her.
“What do you mean?””
Brooke opened her mouth, but Melissa seized her wrist.
“That's enough.””
“Mom, stop!”” Brooke cried.
Melissa released her, then pointed toward the front door.
“Everyone out. Now.””
I took Caleb's hand and led him outside, leaving Melissa behind.
In the car, I called my attorney, then the school, and arranged to have Caleb examined by his pediatrician that afternoon.
I didn't know yet what I was going to do about my marriage.
But I knew I would never leave my son alone with Melissa again.
As I reached for the ignition, Caleb tugged at my sleeve.
“Daddy?””
“Yes, buddy?””
“There's something else you need to see.””
He reached into his backpack and pulled out a folded sheet of paper.
The edges were creased, and several words had been written in a child's uneven handwriting.
At the top was his full name.
Beneath it was a statement claiming that he wanted to live with Melissa's brother, a man Caleb had met only twice.
At the bottom was a signature.
My son's signature.
“Mommy Melissa made me sign it yesterday,” Caleb whispered.
“She said if I didn't, she'd tell you that I hurt Lily.””
I stared at the paper.
Then I noticed the date.
It was dated two weeks earlier.
And beneath the signature was a line that made my blood run cold:
*Witness: Daniel Reeves, Family Services Consultant.*
I knew that name.
Daniel Reeves was the man who had called Melissa on the recording.
