Chapter 10: The Woman Who Raised the Monster

“She's at the same place where Daniel is holding your daughters.””

Sarah's words seemed to freeze the air around me.

I looked at David, who had already grabbed his phone.

“Give me the address again,” I said.

Sarah repeated it. David wrote it down, then immediately passed it to the investigator coordinating the search for Brooke and Lily.

“No one is going there alone,” he told me.

“The authorities will handle the approach.””

I nodded, but my hands were shaking.

Two little girls were missing. My son had been threatened. And somewhere in Savannah, a woman named Evelyn Reeves apparently held the key to the truth about my first wife's disappearance.

I needed answers.

But I needed those children alive more.

Within forty minutes, David and I were in a conference room with two investigators. They had mapped the address Sarah provided: a former rehabilitation center on the outskirts of Savannah, surrounded by pine trees and an old chain-link fence.

The building had been closed for years.

According to property records, it belonged to a holding company registered under a name none of us recognized.

One investigator pointed to a photograph of the building.

“Traffic cameras recorded Daniel's vehicle entering the property at 9:12 this morning. We haven't confirmed whether the girls are inside.””

“Can we see them?”” I asked.

“Not yet.””

“Then how do we know they're alive?””

The investigator met my eyes.

“We don't have confirmation, Mr. Carter. That's why we're treating this as urgent.””

My stomach tightened.

David placed a hand on my shoulder.

“We'll do everything we can.””

At 12:26 p.m., a second investigator entered the room carrying a sealed envelope.

“We've located Evelyn Reeves.””

Everyone turned.

“She contacted the local sheriff's office herself,” he continued.

“She's currently at a secure location and has agreed to provide a statement.””

“Does she know where the girls are?”” I asked.

“She claims she does. She also says she can identify the people involved in Emily Carter's disappearance.””

I leaned forward.

“Can I speak with her?””

“After the initial interview, if she agrees.””

I hated waiting.

But I understood that rushing into the abandoned building could endanger the girls.

So I waited.

At 1:03 p.m., the investigator returned and told us Evelyn was ready to speak.

She appeared on a secure video call from a plain room with white walls and a single window. She was in her late sixties, with silver hair and deep lines around her mouth. Her hands trembled as she adjusted her glasses.

“Mr. Carter,” she said, “I owe you an apology.””

I stared at her.

“Do you know where my son is?””

“I believe Caleb is safe with your brother.””

“I'm asking about Brooke and Lily.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Yes. I know where they are.””

“Then tell me.””

“Daniel took them to the old center. He believes they're useful leverage against you.””

My jaw tightened.

“Why would he take two children who have nothing to do with this?””

“Because Daniel has always believed that people are easiest to control when they're frightened.””

“Then you know him well.””

Evelyn looked down.

“I raised him.””

“Then you helped create this.””

She flinched.

“Yes,” she whispered.

“And I've spent years pretending I didn't see what he was becoming.””

I wanted to shout at her. I wanted to demand why she'd stayed silent while families were threatened and children were used as bargaining chips.

Instead, I asked the question that mattered most.

“Where is Emily?””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Alive.””

The word struck me with the force of a physical blow.

“Where?””

“I don't know her current location. Daniel moved her several times after she discovered the financial scheme. But I know she escaped his control months ago.””

“Why didn't she come home?””

“Because she believed he would hurt Caleb if she did.””

I thought of the birthday card, the letter, and the words Emily had written.

She hadn't stopped loving our son.

She had been trying to protect him.

“What happened four years ago?”” I asked.

Evelyn drew a shaky breath.

“Emily discovered that Daniel and several associates were using fraudulent guardianship petitions to gain control over the financial accounts of vulnerable families. Some of the children involved had inherited money. Others had parents who were missing, incapacitated, or falsely reported as unfit.””

“And my wife's death?””

“Daniel arranged for Emily to be transferred from the hospital before the death certification was completed. He used a false identity to conceal her location and submitted documents suggesting she had died.””

“Who was buried in her grave?””

Evelyn hesitated.

“The authorities will need to establish that through the original records and forensic evidence. I won't speculate.””

It was the first honest answer I'd heard all day.

I swallowed hard.

“Why did you help him?””

“I didn't understand everything at first. Daniel told me he was protecting Emily from people who wanted to destroy her. When I realized what he'd done, I was afraid he would turn on my grandchildren.””

“You let him continue.””

“Yes.””

Her voice cracked.

“I told myself that silence was protecting the family. But silence protected Daniel.””

I stared at her.

“What changed?””

“Brooke and Lily.””

She wiped her eyes.

“I saw them at the center yesterday. They were frightened, and Daniel was telling them their mother had abandoned them. I heard him say he would use them to force you into signing the trust documents.””

“Why didn't you take them and leave?””

“Because Daniel had security cameras and men watching the property. If I'd tried to remove them alone, he might have moved them somewhere worse.””

“So you called the authorities.””

“Yes. And I gave them the records I had hidden for years.””

The investigator beside David nodded.

“Ms. Reeves has provided copies of financial records and an original transfer authorization. We're verifying them now.””

I leaned toward the screen.

“Evelyn, did Emily know about the trust?””

“Yes. She created it for Caleb before she disappeared. Daniel believes the trust contains assets connected to the fraudulent transfers. He wants control of it because he thinks the records can be used to conceal where the money went.””

“But the trust is for my son.””

“Exactly.””

My phone vibrated.

A message from Robert.

*Caleb is safe. He wants to know when you'll be home.*

I closed my eyes for a moment.

“I'll be home as soon as I can,” I typed back.

Then I looked at Evelyn.

“Why are you helping us now?””

She took off her glasses and wiped them with a tissue.

“Because I finally understand that protecting Daniel isn't the same as loving him.””

Her voice trembled.

“And because Emily made me promise something before she disappeared.””

“What?””

Evelyn looked directly into the camera.

“She told me that if I ever had the chance to bring her family back together, I had to choose the truth, even if it destroyed mine.””

The call ended shortly afterward.

The investigators began preparing the next steps.

At 2:17 p.m., one of them received a message from the team monitoring the former rehabilitation center.

A light had turned on in an upstairs room.

Someone was moving behind the curtains.

Then another message arrived.

*Two children visible through the east window. One adult male entering the building.*

The investigator stood.

“We have a possible visual confirmation of the girls.””

I rose with him.

“Are they safe?””

“We're working on it.””

He reached for his radio.

And before anyone could say another word, a third message appeared.

*Daniel Reeves has exited the building. He is carrying a document folder and heading toward a vehicle.*

The investigator looked at me.

“Mr. Carter, whatever happens next, you must let us handle this.””

I nodded.

But as I watched the live photograph of the old center appear on the screen, I noticed something in the upstairs window.

A woman.

She stood behind the curtains, one hand pressed against the glass.

Her face was partially obscured, but I recognized the shape of her shoulders.

The familiar tilt of her head.

And the silver necklace around her neck.

Emily.

May you like

My wife was alive.

And she was standing inside the building where Daniel had taken my daughters.
