Chapter 4: The Man Behind the Plan
I stared at the frozen image on the security monitor.
Marcus.
My wife’s older brother.
The man who had smiled at Noah’s first birthday.
The man who had held my son and told everyone in the room that he was “the future of the family.””
My hands tightened around the edge of the desk.
“Daniel,” Vanessa whispered.
I didn’t look at her.
“Why was Marcus here?””
She said nothing.
That silence was the answer I didn’t want.
Maria stepped closer, her voice shaking.
“Sir… I think you need to see the rest.””
I pressed play.
The footage continued.
Marcus walked onto the patio carrying a small black bag. Vanessa met him near the pool. Their conversation had no audio, but their expressions told a story.
Marcus was calm.
Vanessa was nervous.
He touched her shoulder.
She stepped away.
Then he pointed toward the stroller.
My stomach twisted.
“What was he telling you to do?”” I asked.
Vanessa wiped her tears.
“You don’t understand.””
I turned.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
My voice was quiet, but it scared her more than shouting would have.
“First Maria. Now you. Everyone has a reason why I shouldn’t believe what I’m seeing.””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“I didn’t want this to happen.””
“Then why did you let it?””
She had no answer.
The monitor showed Marcus leaving the patio.
Five minutes later, Vanessa moved the stroller.
Then Maria appeared.
Running.
Jumping into the pool.
Saving my son.
The truth was sitting in front of me.
Not completely.
Not yet.
But enough.
I grabbed my phone.
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“Who are you calling?””
“The police.””
Her face changed.
“Daniel, wait.””
“No.””
“Please.””
I looked at her.
That same word again.
Please.
But this time it didn’t sound like a wife asking her husband for help.
It sounded like someone trying to stop a door from opening.
“You almost let an innocent woman take the blame for something you did.””
“I panicked.””
“You accused Maria.””
“I was scared.””
“You pointed at her and told me she tried to kill our child.””
Vanessa started crying harder.
“I thought I could fix it.””
“How?””
She looked away.
“I don’t know.””
That answer hurt more than a lie.
Because it meant she had actually done something without thinking about the consequences.
A knock suddenly came from the front door.
Everyone froze.
I looked toward the hallway.
Nobody had called anyone yet.
The doorbell rang again.
Vanessa’s face went white.
“Who is that?””
I walked toward the entrance.
Before I reached the door, my phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
I opened the message.
One sentence.
*You need to listen to your wife before you destroy your family.*
My blood ran cold.
Because beneath the message was a photo.
A photo of Noah sleeping in his crib.
Taken from inside my house.
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked terrified.
Not surprised.
Terrified.

And that was when I realized something worse than the pool incident.
Someone else had been watching us.
