Chapter 12: The Choice
I couldn’t breathe.
The photograph shook in my hand.
The baby.
The bracelet.
The date.
Everything connected in a way my mind refused to accept.
“You’re lying.””
Ethan didn’t react.
“I expected you to say that.””
“Then why show me?””
“Because you deserve the truth.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She was crying.
But she wasn’t surprised.
That was the part that hurt the most.
“You knew.””
Her eyes lifted.
“I knew something.””
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“You knew enough.””
Vanessa looked broken.
“I didn’t know where Evelyn was.””
“But you knew she existed.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She looked down.
“Because she came to me.””
The words shocked me.
“When?””
“Before Noah was born.””
I stared.
“What did she want?””
Vanessa wiped her tears.
“She wanted someone to protect him.””
I looked at Ethan.
“From who?””
Nobody answered.
Then Ethan spoke.
“From the people who wanted to control him.””
I frowned.
“What makes Noah so important?””
Ethan looked at the photograph.
“Because Noah was born with something they wanted.””
I felt anger rise.
“He’s a baby.””
“I know.””
“Not a weapon.””
“I know.””
“Not a project.””
“I know.””
Ethan’s voice became softer.
“That’s why Evelyn ran.””
The warehouse went silent.
I looked at the photograph again.
At the woman I supposedly forgot.
At the child I loved.
At the truth that had been hidden from me.
“What happened to my memory?””
Ethan looked at Vanessa.
She looked away.
My stomach dropped.
“Vanessa.””
She whispered:
“I didn’t know.””
“Don’t.””
“I swear.””
Ethan interrupted.
“She wasn’t responsible.””
I looked at him.
“Then who was?””
His expression darkened.
“The same people who sent the message.””
A phone suddenly rang.
Everyone froze.
Not mine.
Not Vanessa’s.
Ethan reached into his pocket.
His face changed when he saw the screen.
“What?””
He listened.
Then his expression became serious.
“We have a problem.””
I stepped forward.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“They know you found out.””
The words barely left his mouth before the warehouse lights went out.
Darkness swallowed everything.
Vanessa screamed.
A loud crash came from the entrance.
Someone had forced the door open.
I grabbed Vanessa’s hand.
“Stay behind me.””
Footsteps echoed through the warehouse.
Slow.
Confident.
Someone was walking toward us.
Ethan moved beside me.
For the first time, we weren’t enemies.
We were facing the same threat.
A voice came from the darkness.
“Daniel.””
I froze.
Because I knew that voice.
Not from today.
Not from the phone.
From somewhere buried deep inside my missing memories.
The figure stepped into the faint emergency light.
A woman.
Older.
Tired.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Daniel…”
My heart stopped.
Because I knew her.
Somehow.
Somewhere.
“Evelyn?”” I whispered.
She looked at me.
May you like
And then she said the words that shattered everything.
“I’m sorry I left you with the wrong child.””
