Chapter 14: The Last Betrayal

I turned slowly.

Toward Vanessa.

For a second, nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa started crying.

“No.””

The word came out immediately.

“No, Daniel, listen to me.””

I stared at her.

“Is it true?””

She shook her head.

“I never wanted to do it.””

My chest tightened.

“That wasn’t my question.””

She looked down.

That was enough.

Ethan stepped forward.

“I knew there was something wrong.””

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

“I was trying to prove it.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone was trying to protect me.””

I looked around.

“And somehow everyone destroyed me.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“I was manipulated.””

I looked at her.

“By Marcus?””

She nodded.

“He found me when I was vulnerable.””

“And told you what?””

Her tears fell.

“That you were going to leave me.””

I remembered.

The divorce papers.

The fights.

The distance between us.

But none of that justified what she had done.

“You moved our son toward a pool.””

“I stopped.””

“You didn’t know Maria would save him.””

“I know.””

Her voice broke.

“I know.””

For the first time, she looked truly ashamed.

“I saw what I was becoming.””

I shook my head.

“Then why continue?””

She closed her eyes.

“Because Marcus threatened me.””

“With what?””

She looked at Ethan.

“With the truth.””

Silence.

“He said if I didn’t cooperate, he would reveal everything about Noah.””

I looked at Evelyn.

“Everything?””

Evelyn nodded.

“They were using Vanessa because they knew she loved him.””

I looked at my wife.

“She was afraid.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“Fear explains actions.””

He looked at Vanessa.

“It doesn’t erase them.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I know.””

A sound came from outside.

Cars.

Multiple cars.

Ethan immediately looked toward the entrance.

“They’re here.””

My body reacted before my mind did.

“Noah.””

We rushed back to the estate.

The moment we arrived, I saw the lights.

Black vehicles surrounding the property.

Security guards were down.

Not hurt.

Just unconscious.

Maria stood inside the house with Noah.

She looked relieved when she saw me.

“Sir.””

I took Noah into my arms.

His tiny hand grabbed my finger.

The same innocent gesture.

The same reason I would fight anyone.

Then the front door opened.

Marcus walked inside.

But he wasn’t alone.

Several men stood behind him.

Vanessa froze.

“Marcus?””

He looked at her.

There was no warmth left.

“I’m sorry.””

My anger exploded.

“You used her.””

Marcus looked at me.

“I used everyone.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“You always were a coward.””

Marcus smiled.

“You still think you won?””

He looked at Noah.

“That child belongs with us.””

I held my son tighter.

“No.””

Marcus sighed.

“Daniel, you don’t understand what he is.””

I looked at him.

“He’s my son.””

Marcus smiled slightly.

“Both of them are.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Ethan.

Then Noah.

Marcus continued.

“You spent years protecting one child while forgetting the other.””

His smile disappeared.

“But now you have both.””

He stepped back.

“And now they want both.””

A loud crash came from outside.

The lights flickered.

Ethan looked toward the window.

“They’re not waiting anymore.””

I held Noah close.

“Who?””

Ethan looked at me.

“The people who started this.””

Then every phone in the room received the same message.

May you like

One sentence.

*Bring the children outside.*
