Chapter 2: The Footage

The room became painfully quiet.

The security monitor played the same few seconds again and again.

Vanessa.

Standing behind Noah’s stroller.

Alone.

My fingers went cold.

“No,” Vanessa whispered.

I slowly turned toward her.

She looked at the screen.

Not angry.

Not confused.

Terrified.

“Daniel, wait.””

I stared at her.

“What am I waiting for?””

She swallowed.

“It’s not what it looks like.””

Those six words.

The words people say when it is exactly what it looks like.

Maria covered her mouth.

“I told you,” she whispered.

Vanessa immediately turned.

“Be quiet.””

Maria flinched.

I noticed.

And that bothered me more than anything.

Because Maria had never been afraid of Vanessa before.

Not once.

I looked back at the monitor.

The footage continued.

Vanessa approached the stroller.

She bent down.

Her body blocked part of the camera angle.

Then the stroller moved.

Slowly.

Toward the pool.

I stopped the video.

“Why?””

My voice sounded strange.

Vanessa shook her head.

“Daniel, you don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She stepped closer.

“I was trying to scare you.””

The room felt like it tilted.

“What?””

She started crying.

“I wasn’t trying to hurt Noah.””

Maria stared at her.

“You pushed him toward the pool.””

Vanessa looked at Maria with anger.

“You don’t know anything.””

“No,” I said quietly.

Vanessa looked back at me.

“I know enough.””

Her face changed.

The tears remained, but something harder appeared underneath.

“You have been watching me for months.””

I didn’t answer.

Because it was true.

“You put cameras around my house.””

“Our house.””

She laughed bitterly.

“Your cameras. Your rules. Your accounts. Your decisions.””

I looked at my son sleeping in my arms.

The words felt impossible.

This was the woman I had married.

The woman who cried when we first saw Noah’s heartbeat on an ultrasound.

The woman who promised we would protect him together.

“What were you trying to scare me into doing?”” I asked.

Vanessa looked away.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she whispered:

“Making you listen to me.””

I stared.

“That’s your explanation?””

“You never hear me anymore.””

“That’s why you put our baby’s life at risk?””

Her eyes flashed.

“I knew you would come home.””

A cold feeling spread through my chest.

“What did you just say?””

Vanessa immediately looked away.

“I mean… I knew you would find him.””

Maria stepped forward.

“Sir, she knew you were coming?””

Vanessa turned sharply.

“Don’t involve yourself.””

“No,” I said.

My voice was louder this time.

“Answer her.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“I wanted you to finally understand how scared I am.””

“Scared of what?””

She looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw something I didn’t recognize.

Not sadness.

Not guilt.

Desperation.

“You were going to leave me.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“You think I don’t know about the lawyer?””

The room went silent.

My heart sank.

Because I had spoken to a divorce attorney.

But only once.

A week earlier.

I had not told anyone.

Not even Maria.

“How did you know?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That silence told me more than words.

I looked at the footage again.

At my son’s stroller.

At my wife standing behind it.

Then I noticed something.

Something the first time I watched, I missed.

A second figure appeared near the patio door.

Only for a moment.

Someone who had entered the backyard before Vanessa.

Someone who had handed Vanessa something.

I zoomed in.

Vanessa’s face went pale.

“Daniel…”

I looked closer.

The person on the screen turned slightly.

And I recognized the face.

It was someone I never expected to be part of this.

Someone who knew exactly how to manipulate my wife.

Someone who had been inside my home before.

My brother-in-law, Marcus.

And beneath the frozen image was a timestamp.

Five minutes before Noah’s stroller moved toward the pool.
