Chapter 7: The Night My Wife Finally Broke

“She said you were supposed to get very sick tonight, Daddy.””

Caleb's words hung in the living room long after he stopped speaking.

Officer Harris immediately moved closer to Vanessa.

“Mrs. Carter, I need you to remain where you are.””

Vanessa opened her eyes.

“You're making this sound like something it isn't.””

“Then explain what you meant when you said the insurance wasn't supposed to pay out tonight,” Officer Bennett replied.

Vanessa looked at me.

For twelve years, that look had meant a hundred different things. Sometimes it meant she wanted me to defend her. Sometimes it meant she was asking me to forgive her without making her apologize.

Tonight, it meant something else.

She wanted me to rescue her from the consequences of her own words.

I couldn't do it.

“Tell them the truth, Vanessa,” I said.

Her face twisted.

“You think you know everything because your son knocked over a glass?””

“No. I think I know enough to stop pretending.””

She stood abruptly.

“I never wanted to hurt you!””

“Then why was there something in my drink?””

“I didn't say there was!””

“Caleb saw you with the bottle. Jessica saw you with the bottle. And you just admitted you expected me to get sick tonight.””

“I meant you were supposed to rest! You've been working yourself to death!””

Officer Harris raised his hand.

“Mrs. Carter, stop. You're changing your explanation every time you're asked a question.””

Vanessa turned on him.

“Because nobody is listening to me!””

“I am listening,” I said.

“I've been listening to you for twelve years. Now I want answers.””

She stared at me with a hatred so sudden that I barely recognized her.

“You want answers? Fine! You want to know why I did everything? Because I was terrified!””

“Of what?””

“Of losing everything!””

She pointed around the room.

“The house. The business. The life we built.

You think money grows on trees? You think I don't know how much you've risked on those renovation projects?””

“My business is profitable.””

“Because I helped you keep it organized!””

“You helped me with paperwork. That doesn't give you the right to take control of my life.””

Her voice broke.

“You were going to leave me.””

I stared at her.

“Who told you that?””

“Nobody had to tell me. I could see it.””

“Did I ever say I wanted a divorce?””

She hesitated.

“No.””

“Did I ever threaten to take Caleb away from you?””

“No.””

“Then why were you making plans to take him away from me?””

Vanessa looked toward our son.

He immediately moved behind my mother.

Something in her expression faltered.

For one moment, I saw the woman who used to sit on the kitchen floor with Caleb when he was a baby, singing off-key lullabies until he fell asleep.

Then she looked back at me.

“You were never supposed to find out this way.””

My stomach tightened.

“Find out what?””

She shook her head.

Officer Bennett stepped forward.

“Mrs. Carter, I'm going to ask you again. What did you mean when you said the insurance wasn't supposed to pay out tonight?””

Vanessa's hands began trembling.

“I meant the policy wasn't supposed to pay out at all. It was supposed to be security for the family.””

“Then why mention tonight?””

“I misspoke!””

Jessica suddenly stepped away from the fireplace.

“No, you didn't.””

Vanessa turned toward her sister.

“Don't.””

Jessica's face was wet with tears.

“You told me the policy was a backup plan. You said Michael would be declared incapable, and you'd control the money until he recovered.””

“That is what I intended!””

“Then why did you tell me to make sure Caleb stayed upstairs during the party?””

The room went silent.

I looked at Jessica.

“What?””

She pressed a trembling hand against her mouth.

“Yesterday, Vanessa told me that if Caleb started asking questions, I had to keep him away from the kitchen. She said he'd been watching too closely.””

I turned toward my wife.

“Were you trying to keep our son away from the kitchen because you knew what you were doing?””

Vanessa shook her head violently.

“I was trying to prevent a scene!””

“A scene?”” Daniel snapped.

“Your ten-year-old nephew was scared enough to destroy a glass in front of thirty people, and you're worried about a scene?””

“He's my son!””

“And he's Michael's son, too!””

Officer Harris asked Jessica to step aside so he could take a fuller statement. Officer Bennett then told Vanessa that she needed to stop approaching family members and follow the officers' instructions.

Vanessa finally sat down.

Her shoulders sagged.

For a few seconds, the only sound was Caleb's quiet crying.

I went to him.

“Look at me, buddy.””

He raised his eyes.

“You are not responsible for what happened tonight. Do you understand?””

“But if I hadn't knocked the glass—”

“Stop right there.””

I gently held his face.

“You saw something that frightened you, and you acted to protect me. I'm proud of you.””

He threw his arms around me.

I held him tightly, fighting the urge to cry.

Then Officer Bennett approached.

“Mr. Carter, we're arranging for you to receive medical evaluation. Given what you've described, we don't want to assume you're safe simply because you feel all right.””

“I understand.””

She also explained that the bottle and the remaining drink would need to be examined. The officers would document the scene and determine what additional investigative steps were appropriate.

I looked toward the dining room.

The broken glass still lay beneath the table. My birthday cake remained untouched. The candles had burned down into little pools of wax.

I'd imagined this evening ending with photographs, laughter, and Caleb sneaking an extra slice of cake.

Instead, my wife sat under police supervision while my son clung to me as if the world might disappear if he let go.

As the officers continued their interviews, Vanessa suddenly called my name.

“Michael.””

I turned.

Her eyes were red, but her voice was steady.

“If you let this go any further, you'll never get your family back.””

I looked at Caleb.

Then at Jessica, who was finally telling the truth.

Then at the bottle sealed for examination.

I turned back to my wife.

“You should have thought about our family before you made my son afraid to speak.””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“Then don't say I didn't warn you.””

Officer Harris immediately asked her what she meant.

She looked down.

May you like

But as he escorted her toward the hallway for a separate conversation, she turned her head and whispered something that only I could hear.

“You have no idea who else is involved.””
