Chapter 10: My Brother's Secret
For five seconds, I couldn't move.
Daniel sat across from me in Andrew's office, his hands resting on his knees. The afternoon sunlight fell across his face, revealing the faint scar above his left eyebrow he'd carried since we were teenagers.
My brother.
The man who had stood between Vanessa and me when she tried to grab my phone. The man who had helped me gather evidence, called my attorney, and promised Caleb would be safe.
The man Jessica had just accused of helping my wife steal control of my life.
“Michael?”” Daniel said quietly.
I lowered my phone.
“Jessica says you helped Vanessa establish the company.””
His expression changed.
Not dramatically. Not like someone caught in a lie.
He simply looked exhausted.
Then he rubbed both hands over his face.
“There's something you need to know.””
Andrew immediately closed his laptop.
“Daniel, before you say anything, I recommend that you obtain independent legal advice if you believe you may be implicated in any wrongdoing. I'm Michael's attorney, and my responsibility is to him.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“I understand.””
I stared at him.
“Tell me what happened.””
He looked toward the office door, then back at me.
“Three months ago, Vanessa called me. She said she was worried about you.””
“Worried about me how?””
“She said you were exhausted, that you were forgetting things, and that your business was putting too much pressure on you.””
I laughed once, without humor.
“So she told you the same story she told Jessica.””
“Yes.””
“And you believed her?””
“I believed you were working too hard. I didn't believe you were incapable of making decisions.””
“Then why did you help her?””
Daniel swallowed.
“She said she wanted to establish a family asset management company. She claimed it would protect the house and the business if anything happened to you.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
“Did you know she was trying to have me declared incapable?””
“No.””
“Did you know about the insurance policy?””
“No.””
“Did you sign anything?””
He looked down.
“Yes.””
The word landed like a physical blow.
Andrew remained silent, allowing me to continue asking questions.
“What did you sign?””
“A document confirming that I knew about the company. Vanessa said it was an acknowledgment that she was setting up a financial structure for the family.””
“Did you witness my signature?””
“No.””
“Did you sign anything saying you had?””
Daniel shook his head.
“Not knowingly.””
I stood and walked toward the window.
Outside, Atlanta traffic moved past the office building as though nothing had happened.
I wanted to believe my brother.
But I also knew that good intentions didn't erase the consequences of bad decisions.
“Why didn't you tell me?”” I asked.
“Because Vanessa said you would panic if you heard the word trust. She told me you'd been having problems with money and that she was trying to prevent you from making a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
“She never explained.””
I turned around.
“And that didn't concern you?””
Daniel's face crumpled.
“Yes. It did. But she's your wife, Michael. I thought she was trying to help.””
“She's also the woman who secretly submitted a medical statement under a dead doctor's name.””
“I didn't know that.””
“She was planning to take control of my finances and send my son away.””
Daniel looked sick.
“I swear to you, I didn't know.””
My anger didn't disappear, but something in his voice made me pause.
I had known Daniel for forty-one years. I'd seen him lie to avoid trouble when we were boys. I'd seen him hide mistakes he was ashamed of.
I'd never seen him look quite like this.
Andrew spoke carefully.
“Daniel, do you have copies of the documents you signed?””
“I think so. Vanessa emailed me some paperwork.””
“Please preserve the original emails and attachments. Don't forward or alter anything until you've received independent legal advice. The relevant investigators can determine what the documents show.””
Daniel nodded.
Then he looked at me.
“There was one thing that bothered me.””
“What?””
“She asked whether I would be willing to testify that you'd been acting strangely.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did you say?””
“I told her I wouldn't lie about my own brother.””
“Did she ask you again?””
He hesitated.
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Last week.””
I stared at him.
“What happened last week?””
Daniel leaned forward, lowering his voice.
“She said the medical application was almost complete and that she needed someone the family trusted to confirm your condition.””
“And you refused?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn't you call me?””
He had no answer.
I turned away, breathing slowly through my nose.
A few minutes later, Jessica joined the conversation by phone, with Officer Bennett aware that she was providing additional information.
She sounded terrified.
“Michael, I didn't know Daniel had been involved until Vanessa told me.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Jessica continued.
“She said your brother had agreed to help establish the company. She told me he'd signed a statement confirming that you'd become unreliable.””
Daniel leaned toward the phone.
“I never said that!””
“I didn't say you did,” Jessica replied.
“I'm telling Michael what Vanessa told me.””
Andrew interrupted before the conversation became an argument.
“Let's separate what each person personally witnessed from what someone else told them. That's important.””
Jessica took a shaky breath.
“There's another thing. Vanessa kept copies of every document in a blue folder. She said if anyone questioned the company, she had enough paperwork to prove everything was legitimate.””
“Where is the folder now?”” I asked.
“I don't know. She had it at the house.””
Officer Bennett had already been informed about the folder, and I relayed Jessica's latest statement to her.
She instructed us not to enter the house or attempt to retrieve anything ourselves.
Then Daniel's phone vibrated.
He glanced at the screen.
His face changed.
“What is it?”” I asked.
He hesitated before handing me the phone.
It was an email from Vanessa, sent two days earlier.
The subject line read: *FINAL DOCUMENTS — PLEASE CONFIRM.*
The message contained an attachment and three lines of text.
Everything must be completed before the end of the month.
If Michael asks questions, tell him the company is for Caleb.
We cannot afford another delay.
I opened the attachment only after Andrew confirmed we should preserve it as received and avoid altering the original.
It contained a draft financial authorization.
Daniel's name appeared as a witness.
My name appeared as the person granting authority.
And beneath the signature line was a scanned image of my signature.
Daniel stared at it.
“That's the first time I've seen that.””
Andrew leaned closer.
“We'll need to establish where that image originated and whether it was copied from another document.””
I looked at my brother.
“Did you ever give Vanessa a copy of my signature?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
“Did you ever help her access my records?””
“No.””
“Did you know she had been photographing me while I slept?””
His expression turned to horror.
“What?””
I told him about Caleb's account and Jessica's statement.
Daniel stood abruptly.
“I swear, Michael, I had nothing to do with that.””
I wanted to believe him.
But before I could respond, Officer Bennett called.
She had an update from the ongoing investigation.
“Mr. Carter, we've identified a discrepancy involving the company documents. We need to speak with Daniel separately, and we may need additional records from your brother.””
Daniel nodded when I told him.
“Of course. I'll cooperate.””
Then he looked at me.
“I know you don't trust me right now.””
I didn't answer.
He swallowed.
“But I want you to know something. Whatever Vanessa has done, I will not help her take Caleb away from you.””
I studied his face.
“I hope you mean that.””
“I do.””
After he left to arrange independent legal advice, Andrew sat beside me.
“Michael, don't decide who is guilty based on who looks frightened or who appears calm. Let the evidence establish what happened.””
I nodded.
I knew he was right.
But when I looked again at the scanned signature on the screen, one question kept returning.
If Daniel hadn't supplied it, and I hadn't signed the document, where had Vanessa obtained the image?
Then my phone rang.
It was Caleb.
I answered immediately.
“Hey, buddy. What's wrong?””
His voice trembled.
“Daddy, Grandma says someone came to the house.””
My blood ran cold.
“Who?””
“I don't know. A man in a suit. He asked for Mom.””
I sat upright.
“Did Grandma let him in?””
“No. But he gave her an envelope.””
“What did she do with it?””
Caleb whispered, “She opened it.””
“And?””
May you like
There was a long silence.
Then he said, “Daddy, it has your picture on it.””
