Chapter 2: The Bottle in His Pocket

I had never seen my wife lose control like that.

Vanessa grabbed my wrist so forcefully that my phone nearly slipped from my hand.

“Give me that,” she demanded.

I pulled away.

“Don't touch me.””

Her eyes widened, as if those three words had offended her more deeply than anything else that had happened that evening.

Behind us, my brother Daniel stepped forward.

“Vanessa, back off.””

“This is a family matter!”” she shouted.

Daniel looked at Caleb's cheek.

“Then why did you hit a child?””

“He attacked me first!””

“He knocked over a glass,” I said.

“You slapped him.””

“He could have ruined everything!””

The words escaped her before she could stop them.

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

She pressed her lips together.

Around us, thirty guests had become an unwilling audience to a scene nobody would forget. My mother was crying quietly near the sofa. My cousin Rachel had moved the younger children into the living room.

Jessica remained beside the cake.

She hadn't moved an inch.

I raised my phone again and dialed 911.

Vanessa's face changed.

“Michael, think about what you're doing,” she said, suddenly lowering her voice.

“You're upset. Caleb is confused. If you bring the police into this, you'll destroy our family over nothing.””

“Then you should have nothing to worry about.””

The operator answered.

I gave our address and explained that my wife had struck our ten-year-old son and that the child believed someone had tampered with my drink.

I didn't know whether the juice contained anything dangerous.

I wasn't going to gamble my life on finding out.

While I spoke, Vanessa began picking up the broken glass.

“Don't touch that!”” Daniel snapped.

She froze with a paper towel in her hand.

“I'm cleaning up.””

“Leave it alone,” I said.

She dropped the towel onto the table.

“You're treating me like a criminal.””

“No,” I replied.

“I'm treating this like something I don't understand yet.””

The operator asked whether anyone needed immediate medical attention. I said Caleb had been slapped and that I was concerned about possible poisoning. She instructed us to keep everyone away from the spilled drink and to wait for officers.

When I ended the call, Vanessa turned toward the guests.

“I'm sorry you all had to witness this,” she said, wiping her eyes.

“Michael has been under tremendous pressure lately. He's not thinking clearly.””

A few people looked uncomfortable.

Nobody answered.

She approached my mother and took her hands.

“You know how much I love him, don't you?””

My mother slowly pulled her hands away.

“I know how much he loves you.””

Vanessa's face tightened.

I led Caleb to the sofa and sat beside him.

“Tell me everything you remember,” I said gently.

He stared at his shoes.

“Mom said not to come into the kitchen yesterday.””

“Why?””

“She said she was making you something special.””

“What did you see?””

“A little brown bottle. She took the cap off and poured some into a spoon. Then she put the spoon in your orange juice.””

My stomach twisted.

“Did you tell anyone?””

He shook his head.

“I tried to tell Aunt Jessica.””

Jessica looked up sharply.

Caleb continued.

“She told me to stop talking because Mom would get mad.””

I turned toward Jessica.

“Is that true?””

She began twisting the strap of her handbag.

“Michael, I didn't know what he was talking about.””

Caleb wiped his nose with his sleeve.

“You told Mom I was watching.””

Jessica's eyes filled with tears.

Vanessa marched across the room.

“That's enough! Caleb has been listening at doors and making up stories. He's always wanted attention when adults are talking.””

“Then why are you so afraid of what he's saying?”” I asked.

She stopped.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she forced a laugh.

“Afraid? I'm furious. There's a difference.””

She grabbed her purse from the side table.

“I need some air.””

Daniel stepped into her path.

“Sit down.””

“Move.””

“Not until the police arrive.””

She lifted her chin.

“You can't tell me what to do in my own house.””

“It's Michael's house too,” Daniel replied.

“And right now, nobody's leaving until the officers hear what happened.””

I expected Vanessa to scream again.

Instead, she looked at Caleb.

Her expression softened in a way that made my skin crawl.

“Sweetheart,” she said, “come here. Mommy knows you're confused.””

Caleb immediately pressed against my side.

“No.””

Vanessa blinked.

“Excuse me?””

“I said no.””

Her mouth opened, then closed.

My son had never refused her so directly before.

I wrapped an arm around his shoulders.

“You don't have to go anywhere you don't feel safe.””

Vanessa's face turned cold.

“Fine. Keep filling his head with nonsense.””

Then Caleb suddenly sat upright.

“Daddy, I have something.””

He reached into the front pocket of his jeans and pulled out a small brown bottle.

The label had been partially peeled away. A few letters remained, along with a prescription number and the name of a pharmacy.

Vanessa made a sound I had never heard from her before.

A short, strangled gasp.

“Give me that!””

She lunged across the coffee table.

I caught her arm and pushed it away.

“Don't!””

The bottle slipped from Caleb's fingers, bounced off the cushion, and landed near my shoe.

I picked it up carefully by the cap.

Vanessa began screaming.

“That's mine! You have no right to take my personal property!””

I turned the bottle over.

There was a prescription label, but the patient's name wasn't mine. The remaining letters were enough to show that the medication had been issued to someone else.

I didn't know what it was, and I wasn't going to guess.

I knew only that my wife had been giving me drinks, my son claimed he'd seen her add something to them, and she was now desperate to get the bottle back.

“Why is your medication in a bottle with someone else's name on it?”” I asked.

Vanessa's eyes darted toward Jessica.

That was when I noticed Jessica was crying.

Not quietly anymore.

Tears rolled down her cheeks as she stared at the bottle in my hand.

“Vanessa,” she whispered, “you told me you got rid of that.””

The entire room seemed to tilt.

I looked at Jessica.

“What exactly did she tell you?””

Vanessa pointed at her sister.

“Shut up.””

Jessica flinched.

“Don't speak to me like that!””

“Jessica, I said shut your mouth!””

Daniel moved closer to me.

“Michael, I think we'd better keep everyone separated until the police arrive.””

I nodded.

Then I heard sirens approaching outside.

Relief washed through me so quickly that my knees nearly weakened.

The front door opened a minute later, and two uniformed officers stepped inside. One introduced himself as Officer Harris, while his partner, Officer Bennett, began speaking with the guests.

I explained what Caleb had witnessed and handed Officer Harris the bottle.

He put on gloves before examining it.

“Do you know what's in here, sir?””

“No.””

“Has anyone consumed the drink?””

“No. My son knocked it out of my hand before I could take a sip.””

Officer Harris glanced toward Caleb.

“You did the right thing telling your father.””

My son began crying again.

I pulled him into my arms.

For the first time that evening, he seemed able to breathe.

Then Officer Bennett approached us with a notepad.

“Mr. Carter, we need to ask your wife a few questions. We may also need the drink and the surrounding area preserved for examination.””

“Of course.””

Vanessa stood near the fireplace, her arms crossed.

“This is absurd,” she announced.

“My husband is making a mistake, and you're all encouraging him.””

Officer Harris turned toward her.

“Ma'am, we'd like you to remain here while we establish what happened.””

She stared at him.

“You can't possibly be serious.””

“I'm serious.””

She looked at me, and her voice dropped to a whisper.

“You have no idea what you've just done.””

Before I could answer, Caleb tugged at my sleeve.

His face had gone pale again.

“Daddy,” he whispered, “there's another thing you need to know.””

I knelt beside him.

“What is it?””

May you like

He looked at Vanessa's handbag.

“That's where she keeps the pictures of you sleeping.””
