Chapter 9: The Evidence They Missed

The police station smelled like old paper and coffee.

I sat across from the investigator while my father held my hand.

Mia sat beside us.

Quiet.

Broken.

Different.

The investigator placed a folder on the table.

“Emily, we found evidence that changes the situation.””

I looked at the folder.

“What kind of evidence?””

He opened it.

Inside were screenshots.

Messages.

Payment records.

Photos.

My stomach tightened.

“What am I looking at?””

The investigator pointed.

“Ethan wasn’t acting alone.””

My father leaned forward.

“We know about Laura.””

The investigator nodded.

“She was involved.””

Mia closed her eyes.

“But Ethan’s motivation was different.””

I looked at the messages.

There were conversations between Ethan and another person.

A person I recognized.

My breath caught.

“No.””

My father looked at me.

“Who is that?””

I couldn’t answer immediately.

Because the name on the screen belonged to someone I trusted.

Someone who had congratulated me.

Someone who had hugged me the week before graduation.

My best friend, Olivia.

The investigator continued.

“She provided Ethan with information about your schedule, your ceremony details, and your personal posts.””

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.””

The investigator looked at me carefully.

“We understand this is difficult.””

“No.””

I pushed the papers away.

“Olivia wouldn’t do this.””

My father looked at the evidence.

“Sometimes people surprise us.””

I remembered every conversation.

Every time Olivia asked about my dress.

Every time she asked what time I would arrive at graduation.

Every time she said she was excited to see me succeed.

My chest felt heavy.

The investigator showed another message.

Ethan had written:

*“Once she loses everything, everyone will stop pretending she’s special.””*

And Olivia replied:

*“Make sure she never finds out I helped.””*

I covered my mouth.

Mia reached toward me.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

For the first time, I saw genuine regret.

Not jealousy.

Not anger.

Just regret.

“I should have told you.””

I nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

She wiped her eyes.

“I know.””

The investigator closed the folder.

“We still need your statement.””

I looked at my father.

Then at Mia.

Then at the evidence.

Months ago, I thought my biggest enemy was my stepsister.

Then I thought it was Ethan.

Now I realized something worse.

Sometimes the people closest to you are the ones who know exactly where to hurt you.

When we left the station, my father stopped outside.

“Are you okay?””

I looked at him.

“No.””

He nodded.

“That’s honest.””

I smiled slightly.

“I thought graduation would be the day I proved myself.””

My father placed a hand on my shoulder.

“You already did.””

We stood there quietly.

Then Mia walked toward us.

“I need to tell you something else.””

My father looked at her.

“What?””

She took a deep breath.

“The dress…”

I frowned.

“What about it?””

Mia looked down.

“I didn’t cut all of it.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

She reached into her bag and pulled out a small piece of fabric.

The hidden inner lining.

“I saved this.””

I stared.

“Why?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because even when I was angry at you…”

She swallowed.

“I never actually wanted to destroy your dream.””

I didn’t know what to say.

Because forgiveness wasn’t simple.

But neither was hate.

Then my phone buzzed.

Another message.

This time from an unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence appeared:

*“You found the people who helped me. But you still haven’t found the reason why they chose you.””*

I looked at my father.

Because the investigation was supposed to be over.

But someone else was still watching.

And they knew a secret about my past that even I didn’t know.
