Chapter 6: The Truth She Hid

We found an empty hallway inside the administration building.

The noise of graduation continued outside.

Families cheering.

Students laughing.

Cameras flashing.

A celebration happening only a few steps away.

But inside that hallway, it felt like the world had stopped.

My father stood with his arms crossed.

Mia sat on a bench.

Ethan was gone.

He disappeared the moment he realized his plan had failed.

“Talk,” my father said.

Mia wiped her tears.

“I met Ethan last year.””

I frowned.

“So?””

“He helped me with school.””

I waited.

“That’s not all.””

She looked at me.

“He knew I was jealous of you.””

My heart sank.

“He knew?””

Mia nodded.

“He noticed every time I got angry when Dad praised you.””

My father’s face changed.

“Mia…”

“I know.””

She looked ashamed.

“He told me I deserved more attention.””

I stared at her.

“And you believed him?””

“At first.””

She looked down.

“He made me feel like someone finally understood me.””

The hallway became quiet.

Then she continued.

“But slowly, he started saying things that scared me.””

“Like what?””

“He said you needed to be humbled.””

I felt sick.

“He convinced me that ruining your graduation would make everyone stop seeing you as perfect.””

My father shook his head.

“He used your insecurity.””

Mia nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked away.

I wanted to be angry.

I was angry.

But underneath that anger was something else.

Disappointment.

Because Mia didn’t destroy my dress because she hated me.

She destroyed it because someone convinced her my happiness was the reason for her unhappiness.

“What happened with the video?”” I asked.

Mia reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small flash drive.

My father immediately stood straighter.

“What is that?””

“The original video.””

I stared.

“You said you deleted it.””

“I lied.””

“Why?””

Mia looked at me.

“Because I knew if I gave this to anyone, Ethan would know I betrayed him.””

My father took the flash drive.

“Where did you get this?””

“He sent it to me.””

My face went cold.

“He trusted you?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“He wanted me to help spread it.””

I closed my eyes.

Everything suddenly made sense.

Ethan wasn’t just trying to embarrass me.

He was trying to turn people against me.

And Mia was supposed to be the person who made it believable.

My father looked at the flash drive.

“We need to see what’s on this.””

We found a computer in the office nearby.

The file opened.

For a moment, nobody breathed.

Then the video started.

It showed me.

But not the real me.

Clips were cut together.

Words were removed.

Moments were twisted.

It looked convincing.

Too convincing.

Then the final clip appeared.

The one Ethan planned to release.

And my blood froze.

Because the last few seconds weren’t edited.

They were real.

It showed Mia.

Standing outside my room.

Holding the scissors.

But then another person appeared behind her.

Someone who had been there before she cut the dress.

Someone who had handed her the scissors.

Someone who had been controlling everything from the beginning.

My father leaned closer to the screen.

His voice became barely audible.

“No…”

I looked at him.

“Dad?””

He pointed at the screen.

Because standing beside Mia was someone we never expected.

May you like

Someone from our own family.

And that person was smiling.
