Chapter 13: The Truth Behind The Family

The photograph sat between us on the kitchen table.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody needed to.

The truth was already screaming from the image.

My mother.

My uncle.

Laura.

Together.

Years before Laura ever entered our home.

I looked at my father.

“How?””

My voice was barely a whisper.

“How was she connected to my mother?””

My father looked older than he had that morning.

Older than I had ever seen him.

“I don’t know everything.””

I shook my head.

“But you know something.””

He looked down.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt more than a lie.

“Tell me.””

He took a long breath.

“Before your mother died, she discovered that Laura had been involved with a company she was investigating.””

“What company?””

“One that was taking money from families through fake investment programs.””

My stomach tightened.

“And my mother found out?””

“Yes.””

My father looked at the photograph.

“She was planning to expose them.””

The room became silent.

Mia stepped closer.

“And Mom was involved?””

My father nodded slowly.

“I didn’t know how deeply.””

My hands trembled.

“So all of this…”

I looked at the broken pieces of my life.

“The dress.””

“The video.””

“The graduation.””

“It wasn’t just jealousy.””

My father looked at me.

“No.””

“It was a distraction.””

The realization hit me.

Someone wanted everyone focused on my humiliation.

Because while we were fighting…

They were hiding something else.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

I answered.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was only breathing.

Then a man’s voice.

“Emily?””

I couldn’t move.

The investigator’s words came back.

My uncle.

The person who was supposed to be dead.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

“I’m your mother’s brother.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Why are you contacting me?””

“Because I tried to stop them.””

“Stop who?””

Another pause.

“Laura.””

My father closed his eyes.

My uncle continued.

“Your mother found documents proving what she did.””

“What documents?””

“The original files.””

I looked at my father.

“Where are they?””

“I don’t know.””

“You contacted me just to tell me that?””

“No.””

His voice became urgent.

“I contacted you because Laura knows I’m alive.””

My blood ran cold.

“How?””

“Because she was the one who tried to make sure I disappeared.””

Nobody spoke.

My uncle continued.

“Emily, you are in danger.””

The call ended.

I stood there holding the phone.

Mia whispered:

“She knew?””

My father nodded.

And for the first time, I saw something in Mia’s eyes.

Not jealousy.

Fear.

“My entire life…”

She covered her mouth.

“My entire life, I thought she was protecting me.””

I looked at her.

“She was protecting herself.””

A sound came from outside.

A car door closing.

Everyone turned.

My father walked toward the window.

Then stopped.

Because Laura was standing outside.

Watching the house.

She wasn’t angry.

She wasn’t afraid.

She was calm.

Like she had been waiting.

My father stepped outside.

I followed.

Mia followed behind me.

Laura looked at all three of us.

Then she smiled.

“I guess the truth finally came out.””

My father’s voice was cold.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

“How long?””

Laura looked at me.

“Long enough.””

My chest tightened.

“Why?””

She stared at me.

“Because your mother ruined everything.””

I felt my father move beside me.

“That is not an excuse.””

Laura laughed quietly.

“You don’t understand.””

“No,” I said.

“You don’t understand.””

She looked surprised.

I stepped forward.

“You destroyed my graduation because you wanted control.””

Her face changed.

“You think this is about a dress?””

“No.””

I looked directly at her.

“It’s about you spending years trying to make me smaller.””

For the first time, Laura had no response.

Then she reached into her coat.

My father immediately moved.

“What are you doing?””

Laura pulled out an old envelope.

She held it up.

“The documents you’re looking for.””

Everyone froze.

“You have them?”” my father asked.

She smiled.

“Yes.””

Then she looked at me.

“But before you get them…”

May you like

Her expression hardened.

“You need to know why your mother died.””
