Chapter 5: The Graduation Trap
The drive to the university felt longer than it ever had before.
Nobody talked.
My father kept one hand on the steering wheel and the other gripping my phone.
Mia sat in the back seat.
Silent.
For the first time in years, she wasn’t trying to compete with me.
She wasn’t trying to win.
She was afraid.
When we arrived, the campus was already crowded.
Families were taking pictures.
Graduates were laughing.
Everyone was celebrating.
And I felt like I was walking into a storm.
“I don’t want to go inside,” I whispered.
My father looked at me.
“Why?””
I looked around.
“What if everyone believes him?””
My father turned off the car.
“Look at me.””
I did.
“Your entire life cannot be controlled by someone who wants to hurt you.””
I swallowed.
“But what if they see the video?””
“Then they see the truth.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t understand how fast people judge.””
My father smiled sadly.
“No. I understand exactly.””
He looked toward the campus.
“When I was your age, I lost my job because someone lied about me.””
I blinked.
“You never told me that.””
“Because I didn’t want you carrying my pain.””
He paused.
“But I learned something.””
“What?””
“That people who build their lives on lies eventually have nothing left when the truth arrives.””
His words stayed with me.
Then someone called my name.
I turned.
My heart sank.
Ethan was walking toward us.
Perfect smile.
Perfect clothes.
Acting like nothing happened.
“Hey,” he said.
I stared at him.
“Why are you here?””
He laughed.
“What do you mean? We’re graduating.””
My father stepped slightly in front of me.
Ethan noticed.
His smile faded for a second.
Then returned.
“Mr. Carter.””
My father’s expression remained cold.
“Ethan.””
A few students nearby started looking over.
Ethan lowered his voice.
“I think there’s been a misunderstanding.””
“Is there?”” my father asked.
Ethan looked at me.
“I heard something happened with your dress.””
I froze.
“How did you know?””
He shrugged.
“People talk.””
My father watched him carefully.
“You seem very interested.””
Ethan smiled.
“Of course. She’s my classmate.””
I looked at him.
“You planned something.””
His face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””
My father took out his phone.
“Interesting.””
Ethan looked at the screen.
“What?””
My father played the audio recording.
Mia had secretly recorded part of Ethan’s conversation the night before.
His own voice filled the air.
“She thinks she’s special. Graduation will fix that.””
Ethan’s face went pale.
People around us started whispering.
“No,” Ethan said quickly.
“That’s edited.””
My father looked at him.
“You sound very confident for someone who didn’t know we had a recording.””
Ethan stepped back.
“This is ridiculous.””
Then he looked at Mia.
And his expression changed.
“You.””
Mia froze.
“You told them?””
She didn’t answer.
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“After everything I did for you?””
My eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
Silence.
A terrible silence.
Because Ethan had just revealed something.
Something none of us knew.
My father stepped closer.
“What did you do for Mia?””
Ethan realized his mistake.
Too late.
Mia looked terrified.
“Ethan…”
My father turned toward her.
“Mia.””
She looked away.
And I knew.
There was another secret.
One that had nothing to do with my dress.
One that explained why Ethan had been so sure he could control everything.
“What did you promise him?”” I asked.
Mia’s eyes filled with tears.
And before she could answer, the graduation announcement echoed across the campus.
The ceremony was starting.
May you like
But none of us moved.
Because the truth Mia was about to reveal could change everything.
