Chapter 14: The Name on the File

The police cruiser smelled like vinyl, rain, and disinfectant.

I sat in the back seat beside Lily.

Dad, Ethan, Chloe, and Marcus were in separate vehicles.

Nobody explained anything.

Not until we reached the station.

A detective named Harris met us in an interview room.

He placed a thick folder on the table.

“Claire, I need you to stay calm.””

I almost laughed.

“Tonight my mother framed my brother, my uncle tried to destroy evidence, my childhood house burned down, and now you're telling me to stay calm.””

Detective Harris nodded.

“Fair.””

He opened the folder.

“This case began twenty-four years ago.””

He slid a photograph toward me.

A young woman.

A hospital bracelet.

A newborn baby.

My breath caught.

“That’s Mom.””

“Yes.””

“Who's the baby?””

Harris looked at me.

“You.””

Lily stared at the photograph.

“What does that mean?””

Harris opened another document.

“The baby was registered under a different name.””

I looked at the page.

*Emily Grace Walker.*

My hands went cold.

“Who is Emily?””

Harris didn't answer immediately.

Then he said:

“She was the daughter of a woman named Sarah Walker.””

I stared at him.

“Was?””

“Sarah died in a house fire twenty-four years ago.””

Lily whispered, “The old house.””

Harris nodded.

“No. Another house.””

He pulled out another photograph.

A burned building.

A family standing outside.

And a little girl.

The girl looked exactly like me.

I pushed the photograph away.

“No.””

Dad entered the room.

“Claire.””

I turned toward him.

“Tell me I'm your daughter.””

He froze.

“Claire…”

“Say it.””

He sat beside me.

“You're my daughter.””

“Biologically?””

His eyes filled.

“I don't know.””

I looked at Mom's file.

Harris continued.

“Your mother was working for Sarah Walker's family at the time.””

“Working as what?””

“Caretaker.””

Marcus stood in the doorway.

“She took the baby.””

Everyone turned.

Harris didn't stop him.

Marcus continued.

“Sarah discovered that your grandfather was stealing money from her company.””

I stared at him.

“He killed her?””

“No.””

“Then who?””

Marcus looked at Dad.

“David.””

Dad's face hardened.

“My brother?””

Marcus nodded.

“David caused the fire to destroy the financial records.””

I whispered:

“And Mom took me?””

“She believed Sarah was dead.””

“Was she?””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

The room went silent.

Harris opened another file.

“Sarah survived the fire.””

I stared at him.

“Where is she?””

He looked at me.

“She disappeared.””

“Twenty-four years ago?””

“Yes.””

“Why are you telling me now?””

Harris placed the charred paper on the table.

“Because we found a matching document tonight.””

My hands shook.

“What document?””

He pulled out a DNA report.

The name at the top made my heart stop.

*SARAH WALKER.*

Below it was another name.

*CLAIRE MORGAN.*

The probability of a mother-child relationship was 99.99%.

I couldn't speak.

Lily grabbed my hand.

“She’s alive.””

Harris nodded.

“We believe so.””

“Where?””

He looked toward the observation window.

“That's the problem.””

I followed his gaze.

Someone stood behind the glass.

A woman.

Gray hair.

A scar across one cheek.

She was staring directly at me.

I couldn't breathe.

Harris opened the door.

The woman stepped inside.

She looked at me for several seconds.

Then she whispered:

“Emily?””

I stood.

“Who are you?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I've waited twenty-four years to answer that question.””

She reached into her coat.

Dad stepped forward.

“Don't.””

The woman stopped.

Then she pulled out a photograph.

It showed a young woman holding a newborn baby.

The baby had a tiny birthmark on her wrist.

I looked at my own wrist.

The same mark.

The woman whispered:

“You were stolen from me.””

I looked at Mom through the glass.

She was being escorted down the hallway in handcuffs.

For the first time, she wasn't crying.

She was smiling.

I turned back toward Sarah.

“Why would my mother steal me?””

Sarah's expression broke.

“Because she thought you were the only thing standing between her and a murder conviction.””

My blood ran cold.

“What murder?””

Sarah looked toward Dad.

Then Marcus.

Then Lily.

Finally, she looked at me.

“Your father didn't die.””

I frowned.

“My father is right there.””

Sarah shook her head.

“Not John.””

She leaned closer.

“The man who died in the first fire wasn't your father.””

“He was your brother.””

Dad went pale.

“And the person who ordered that fire…”

Sarah stopped.

The station lights flickered.

A police officer rushed into the room.

“Detective!””

Harris turned.

“What?””

“We have a problem.””

“What kind?””

May you like

The officer looked at me.

“Your mother just escaped.””
