Chapter 10: The Man Behind the Fire

Chloe stood at the top of the basement stairs with the steel box pressed against her chest.

Behind her was a man I had never seen before.

But Dad had.

His face changed the instant he saw him.

“David?””

The man smiled without warmth.

“Hello, John.””

Dad moved toward the stairs.

“What are you doing here?””

David descended one step.

“Cleaning up a mistake.””

Ethan stepped beside Dad.

“You're the one Mom was working with.””

David looked at him.

“You grew up.””

Ethan's jaw tightened.

“You remember me.””

“Of course.””

“You left me in that garage.””

David's smile disappeared.

“I didn't leave you.””

“You locked the door.””

“I was following instructions.””

Dad looked at Mom.

“What instructions?””

Mom's eyes stayed on David.

“Don't.””

David laughed.

“Still protecting him?””

Dad pointed toward his brother.

“Tell me what happened.””

David descended another step.

“Your wife wanted money. I helped her create the opportunity.””

Dad's voice shook.

“You planned the fire.””

“We planned an accident.””

Ethan scoffed.

“You planned to kill my father.””

David shrugged.

“That was never the intention.””

“But you increased Dad's life insurance,” Ethan said.

David looked impressed.

“You really did find everything.””

Dad turned toward Mom.

“You knew?””

Mom nodded.

“I knew about the policy.””

“And David?””

“He arranged it.””

Dad looked sick.

“Why?””

David answered.

“Because John was worth more dead than alive.””

The words landed like a physical blow.

Dad stared at his brother.

“You were my brother.””

David shrugged.

“And you were always the lucky one.””

Mom suddenly spoke.

“It wasn't supposed to happen that way.””

David turned toward her.

“You lit the match.””

“I panicked.””

“You took the money.””

“Because you threatened me.””

David laughed.

“I gave you exactly what you asked for.””

I looked at Chloe.

“Why are you holding the box?””

She looked down.

“Because David told me to get it.””

Ethan stepped toward her.

“Chloe, put it down.””

She shook her head.

“I can't.””

“Why?””

“Because he has something.””

David smiled.

“What do I have, Chloe?””

She stared at him.

“You know.””

David pulled a phone from his pocket.

He tapped the screen.

A video appeared.

Chloe as a little girl.

The old house.

Smoke.

A younger Mom screaming.

And then little Chloe running toward the garage.

The video stopped.

Dad stared.

“What is that?””

David answered.

“Insurance.””

Ethan looked at Chloe.

“You saw the fire.””

“I was eight.””

“You saw Mom lock me inside.””

Chloe started crying.

“I didn't know what to do.””

“You could have told someone.””

“I was scared.””

“You stayed silent for twelve years.””

She looked at him.

“I thought you'd hate me.””

“I do.””

Chloe flinched.

Ethan immediately looked away.

Dad's expression softened slightly.

Then David raised his phone.

“If this recording gets released, every person in this family becomes part of the story.””

Dad stared.

“You're blackmailing us.””

“I'm protecting myself.””

Mom suddenly stepped forward.

“David, give me the phone.””

He laughed.

“You don't give orders anymore.””

Mom's face hardened.

“You promised me.””

“I promised you money.””

“You promised nobody would get hurt.””

David's smile vanished.

“That was before your husband started digging.””

Dad looked at Ethan.

“You've been investigating him?””

“For months.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because every time I tried, Mom stopped me.””

Mom whispered, “I was trying to keep you alive.””

Ethan shook his head.

“You were trying to keep your secret alive.””

A siren sounded in the distance.

Everyone froze.

David looked toward the ceiling.

“Who called the police?””

I raised my hand.

“I did.””

David's expression changed.

He grabbed Chloe by the arm.

“Move.””

She screamed.

Ethan lunged.

The steel box fell.

It hit the floor.

The lid popped open.

Documents scattered across the basement.

Dad bent down.

One page caught his eye.

He picked it up.

His face went completely white.

“Claire…”

I looked at him.

“What?””

He handed me the paper.

It wasn't an insurance policy.

May you like

It was a DNA test.

And the names at the top were mine and David's.
