Chapter 1: The Five-Minute Order

“Get out of my house.””

Dad’s voice cracked through the living room, louder than Chloe’s screaming had been.

Ethan stood beneath the hallway light, still wearing his gray work shirt and plastic employee badge. His car keys trembled between his fingers.

“Dad, I didn’t touch her,” Ethan said.

Chloe sobbed into Mom’s shoulder. Her torn shirt hung crookedly from one shoulder, and a red mark streaked across her neck.

“He grabbed me,” she whispered.

Mom tightened her arms around Chloe.

“I knew something was wrong with him,” she said.

I stared at her.

“What does that even mean?””

Mom turned sharply.

“Not now, Claire.””

Outside, rain tapped against the windows. The smell of Ethan’s wet jacket mixed with the burnt garlic from dinner. Everything about the room looked painfully normal—the family photos on the wall, Dad’s recliner, the lamp lying shattered across the carpet.

Except my brother looked like a stranger.

Not because of what he had done.

Because everyone was looking at him like he had done it.

Dad pointed toward the stairs.

“Ethan, pack a bag.””

Ethan swallowed.

“You’re serious?””

“You have five minutes.””

“I just walked through the door.””

“I don’t care.””

Ethan looked at Mom.

“Mom, please. Tell him you know me.””

Mom wouldn't meet his eyes.

“The police will figure it out.””

Ethan gave a short, broken laugh.

“The police?””

Chloe immediately started crying harder.

“He threatened me too.””

Dad stepped forward.

“Enough.””

I grabbed Ethan’s wrist before he could move.

“Dad, stop. Look at him.””

Dad’s jaw tightened.

“Let go of him.””

“He still has his work badge on. He came straight home.””

“That proves nothing.””

“It proves he wasn't here when—”

“I said let go.””

Ethan gently pulled his arm from mine.

“Claire, don’t.””

His voice was quiet.

That frightened me more than yelling would have.

He looked at Chloe.

“Why would you do this?””

Chloe’s eyes widened.

“See? He’s threatening me again.””

“I asked you a question.””

Dad shoved himself between them.

“You’re done.””

Ethan looked at me.

“Tell them I didn't do it.””

“I will.””

His eyes stayed on mine for a second.

Then he nodded.

“I knew you would.””

He disappeared upstairs.

Mom kept stroking Chloe’s hair.

“You're safe now,” she whispered.

Chloe nodded against her chest.

But something bothered me.

Chloe hadn't looked frightened when Ethan asked why she was lying.

She had looked angry.

Five minutes later, Ethan came downstairs carrying an old duffel bag.

Dad opened the front door.

“You can stay at a hotel tonight.””

“I don't have money for a hotel,” Ethan said.

“Then figure it out.””

“Dad…”

“Leave.””

Ethan stepped outside.

Before the door shut, he looked back at me.

“I didn't do this.””

“I know.””

The door slammed.

Silence filled the room.

Then Lily appeared halfway down the staircase.

She was sixteen, barefoot, and holding her phone in both hands.

Her face was pale.

“Dad?””

He turned.

“What?””

Lily looked at Chloe.

Then Mom.

Then me.

“I think you need to see something.””

Chloe’s crying stopped.

May you like

Just for half a second.

And that was the moment I knew whatever was on Lily’s phone could change everything.
