Chapter 2: The Money That Disappeared
My father carried me to the couch and wrapped his suit jacket around my shoulders.
I remember how warm it smelled, like his aftershave and the peppermint candies he kept in his office drawer.
"Stay right here, sweetheart," he said.
"I'm going to get you some ice.""
"I can get it," Vanessa interrupted.
"Daniel, honestly, you're making her think she can manipulate you.""
He turned toward her.
"She is seven years old. Her cheek is swollen.""
"She was being difficult.""
"She asked you for shoes.""
"Exactly!"" Vanessa snapped.
"She sees her stepsisters getting things and suddenly decides she deserves everything they have.""
Daddy glanced at the shopping bags scattered across the room.
"Everything?""
Vanessa lifted her chin.
"Don't twist my words.""
He picked up the receipt from the coffee table.
"What did you spend today?""
"That's none of your concern.""
His eyes narrowed.
"On whose credit card did you make these purchases?""
Vanessa hesitated.
"Yours, obviously. We share expenses.""
"That card is for household costs and Lily's necessities. I transfer you fifteen hundred dollars every month specifically for her clothes, shoes, school supplies, and other needs.""
I looked up.
Vanessa had told me something very different.
Three months earlier, when I had asked for a winter coat because my old one no longer covered my wrists, she had said my father was struggling financially.
"Daddy doesn't have extra money for you," she had explained while fastening a new necklace around her own neck.
"You should be grateful he's willing to keep paying for your school.""
I had believed her.
Now my father's voice softened.
"Lily, did Vanessa tell you I stopped sending money for you?""
I nodded.
"She said you didn't want to spend it on me anymore.""
Daddy went completely still.
Vanessa rushed forward.
"She's confused! Children misunderstand things all the time.""
"No," I whispered.
Everyone looked at me.
I clutched the edge of Daddy's jacket.
"She said if I told you about my shoes, you'd get angry and send me away.""
My father knelt in front of me again.
"Send you away? Lily, why would I ever send you away?""
Vanessa made an impatient sound.
"Oh, for heaven's sake. I was trying to teach her not to be demanding.""
Daddy rose slowly.
"How much money have I given you over the last two years?""
"Daniel, I don't keep every little detail in my head.""
"Fifteen hundred dollars a month.""
He took out his phone.
"That's eighteen thousand dollars a year. And I also pay the school directly. So explain why my daughter is wearing shoes with holes in them while your daughters have five new pairs between them.""
Vanessa's face reddened.
"Because Madison and Chloe actually take care of their things. Lily destroys everything she owns.""
I looked at my broken sneaker.
I had worn those shoes for almost a year. I had cleaned them with an old toothbrush because Vanessa said dirty shoes made the entire family look poor.
Daddy opened the receipt.
His eyes moved down the page.
Then stopped.
"What is this?""
Vanessa reached for the paper.
"Give that to me.""
He pulled it away.
"A twelve-thousand-eight-hundred-dollar jewelry purchase?""
The room fell silent.
My father read the line again, as if the numbers might rearrange themselves.
"This was charged to my account yesterday.""
Vanessa pressed her lips together.
"It was a special purchase.""
"Special for whom?""
"For me! I deserve something nice after everything I do for this family.""
Daddy stared at her.
"You spent nearly thirteen thousand dollars on jewelry while telling me Lily had everything she needed?""
"I never said that!""
"You just told me she destroys her belongings. You didn't even know what size shoes she wears, did you?""
Vanessa opened her mouth but said nothing.
From the couch, Madison suddenly spoke.
"Mom, is that why you told us never to show Dad the receipts?""
Vanessa spun around.
"Madison, shut your mouth!""
The little girl flinched.
My father stepped between them.
"Don't speak to her like that. Madison, what receipts are you talking about?""
Madison twisted the hem of her new dress between her fingers.
"The ones in Mom's purse. She said some things were presents for Lily, but we weren't allowed to tell you.""
Vanessa lunged for her handbag.
Daddy moved first.
He picked it up from the armchair and set it on the table.
"Nobody is touching anything until I understand what's happening.""
"Daniel, you're humiliating me in front of the children!""
"You slapped my daughter in front of them. Don't lecture me about humiliation.""
He called his bank and asked to speak with the fraud department. While he waited, Vanessa paced between the kitchen and the living room, muttering about how ungrateful everyone was.
Then Daddy opened the account statement on his phone.
I watched his expression change as he scrolled.
There were transfers he didn't recognize. Repeated withdrawals. Payments to a private jewelry boutique. Purchases from stores nowhere near our neighborhood.
"Vanessa," he said quietly, "what is V.C. Luxury Holdings?""
She stopped pacing.
"An investment account.""
"An investment account in your name?""
"It's complicated.""
"Then simplify it.""
She snatched a tissue from the table and dabbed at her eyes.
"I have sacrificed so much for you. I look after three children. I manage this house. You work all the time, and now you come home and treat me like a criminal because your daughter is crying.""
Daddy didn't move.
"I'm looking at money that was supposed to pay for my daughter's needs.""
"She has food! She has a bedroom! What more does she need?""
"Shoes that fit.""
For a second, even the refrigerator seemed to stop humming.
Then Madison climbed down from the couch.
She walked toward my father, holding something tightly in her fist.
"Dad?""
He turned.
"What is it, Madison?""
She opened her hand.
A small brass key rested in her palm.
"Mom keeps a box in her closet. She told us never to touch it. But yesterday, I heard her talking to someone on the phone.""
Madison looked at Vanessa, then back at Daddy.
"She said Lily's money was almost gone.""
My father's fingers closed around the key.
"What box?""
May you like
Madison's voice dropped to a whisper.
"The one with Lily's name on it.""
