Chapter 11: The School Records
My father drove me to school the next morning himself.
He held my hand as we walked through the entrance, past the colorful drawings on the walls and the little reading corner where I used to hide whenever the other children asked why my shoes were always broken.
The school smelled of crayons, floor polish, and the cinnamon rolls served in the cafeteria.
Everything looked normal.
That made what we were about to discover even more frightening.
The principal, Mrs. Whitmore, met us in her office.
"Daniel, I received your call. Is everything all right?""
"No," Daddy answered.
"I need to review Lily's emergency contact and collection records.""
Mrs. Whitmore frowned.
"Of course. Is there a problem?""
"Someone may have submitted unauthorized changes.""
She looked concerned immediately.
"Lily, sweetheart, why don't you sit over there with Ms. Parker while your father and I look at the records?""
My teacher was waiting outside the office. She took me to the reading corner and gave me a picture book, but I couldn't concentrate.
Through the half-open door, I heard Daddy speaking in a low voice.
"Who authorized this change?""
Mrs. Whitmore sounded confused.
"The form was submitted last year. It listed Vanessa Carter as the primary guardian and removed you as the first emergency contact.""
"Why wasn't I notified?""
"According to the form, you signed the authorization.""
"I did not.""
There was a long pause.
Then Mrs. Whitmore said, "Daniel, I'm looking at your signature.""
Daddy replied, "Then someone forged it.""
My teacher sat beside me.
"Would you like some water, Lily?""
I nodded.
She handed me a cup.
"Did something happen at home?""
I looked down at the book.
"I asked for shoes.""
She waited.
"My stepmother slapped me.""
Ms. Parker went completely still.
"Oh, Lily.""
"Please don't tell her I said that.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Sweetheart, I can't promise to keep something like that secret. My job is to help keep you safe.""
I understood.
For the first time, an adult had told me the truth about what happened when a child was hurt.
She didn't tell me to stop complaining.
She didn't tell me to be grateful.
She didn't tell me to hide my tears.
She simply held my hand until Daddy came to get me.
His face looked grim.
"The school has suspended Vanessa's collection authorization while they verify the records.""
I looked up.
"Can she still come get me?""
"Not without my permission. And she won't be coming.""
He crouched beside me.
"You're safe, sweetheart.""
Mrs. Whitmore joined us, carrying a folder.
"We found something else," she said.
"Last year, someone requested copies of Lily's academic and medical records. The request claimed to come from a family attorney.""
Daddy took the folder.
"Was the attorney's name listed?""
"Yes. But when our administration called the law firm, they said they had never represented Lily.""
Robert, who had arrived at the school, examined the request.
"Do you have the original email?""
Mrs. Whitmore nodded.
She turned on her computer and opened the archived message.
The sender had used an address that looked almost identical to the real law firm's domain.
The email requested information about my allergies, medical history, school performance, and behavioral assessments.
Daddy stared at the screen.
"Why would Vanessa need all of this?""
Robert read the message again.
"She may have been gathering information to support a guardianship petition. If she wanted to claim that Daniel was unable to care for Lily, she might have been looking for records she could misrepresent.""
My stomach tightened.
"Was I bad at school?""
Mrs. Whitmore turned toward me.
"No, darling. You're a lovely student.""
"Then why would she need my school records?""
Nobody answered immediately.
Daddy took my hand.
"Because she wanted control, Lily. And she was willing to do things that hurt you to get it.""
Before we left, Mrs. Whitmore printed copies of the relevant records and confirmed that all future changes would require direct verification with my father.
Daddy thanked her.
Then he asked to speak privately with Ms. Parker.
I waited in the hallway, tracing the edge of my new purple sneakers against the floor.
When he returned, he looked both furious and heartbroken.
"What did she tell you?"" I asked.
He hesitated.
"Your teacher said you often stayed after class because you were afraid to go home.""
I looked away.
"Sometimes.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
I rubbed the seam of my jacket.
"Vanessa said you worked hard because I was difficult. She said if I made you worry, you might decide you didn't want me anymore.""
Daddy knelt in front of me.
"Lily, listen carefully. You never have to protect me from the truth about how someone treats you.""
"But you were always tired.""
"That was my responsibility to manage. Not yours.""
He wrapped his arms around me.
"I should have noticed. I'm sorry.""
I held him tightly.
For years, I had believed that being a good daughter meant being quiet, needing nothing, and never making anyone uncomfortable.
Now my father was telling me that I had been allowed to ask for help all along.
That afternoon, Robert received an email from the forensic investigator examining Vanessa's financial records.
Several documents had been recovered from a cloud account connected to her old laptop.
Among them was a draft guardianship petition.
The petition claimed that Daniel Carter was emotionally unstable following his wife's death and financially incapable of caring for his daughter.
It also included a statement from an alleged witness.
The witness claimed that Lily had repeatedly been neglected at home.
Daddy read the document twice.
"Who wrote this?""
Robert scrolled to the final page.
The draft had been created under Vanessa's account, but the witness statement carried another person's name.
Michael Carter.
My uncle.
The same man who had denied knowing anything about Vanessa's plans.
Daddy slowly closed the laptop.
"He's going to explain this.""
But before Robert could arrange another meeting, Michael sent a message.
It contained only one sentence.
Daniel, I need to tell you what Vanessa threatened to do if I refused to help her.
May you like
And attached to the message was a photograph of a signed agreement.
An agreement that suggested my uncle had been blackmailed into helping Vanessa take control of my life.
