Chapter 10: The Papers That Could Have Stolen My Family
For several seconds after the recording ended, nobody moved.
My father stood beside the kitchen table, staring at the voice recorder as if my mother's voice might return and explain everything.
Aunt Rachel sat across from him, twisting a tissue between her fingers.
I climbed onto the chair beside her.
"What did Vanessa want to do with me?""
Rachel looked at Daddy before answering.
"She wanted to become your legal guardian, sweetheart. She said your father was too busy with work to take care of you properly.""
Daddy's face hardened.
"She told Emily that?""
"She told your mother you were planning to send Lily to boarding school. She said she was afraid Lily would grow up neglected.""
"That's a lie!""
"I know that now, Daniel. But Vanessa made everything sound reasonable. She brought documents to the hospital and said they were temporary arrangements in case Emily's condition worsened.""
My father gripped the edge of the table.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Rachel's eyes filled with tears.
"Because I believed her.""
The admission seemed to hurt him more than any excuse could have.
Rachel continued.
"Your mother was frightened. She had been taking strong medication, and Vanessa kept telling her that signing the papers would protect Lily. I witnessed one document because Vanessa said it was a medical authorization.""
"What document?"" Daddy asked.
Rachel opened her canvas bag and removed a yellowed folder.
Inside were photocopies of legal papers, hospital notes, and several handwritten letters.
She placed one document in front of him.
The heading read Proposed Guardianship and Financial Administration Agreement.
Daddy read the first page.
Then the second.
His expression changed.
"This would have given Vanessa control over Lily's trust if Emily died and I was deemed unable to provide care.""
Rachel nodded.
"That was what I eventually discovered.""
"But I was never declared unable to provide care.""
"No. The agreement was never completed. Emily refused to sign the final page.""
Daddy looked up.
"Why?""
Rachel hesitated.
"Because she found a different document in Vanessa's folder. A document naming someone else as Lily's proposed guardian.""
"Who?""
Rachel lowered her eyes.
"Vanessa's former husband.""
The name meant nothing to me, but Daddy recognized it.
"Peter Lawson?""
Rachel nodded.
"Vanessa told Emily that Peter had agreed to help raise Lily if anything happened to both of you. But when I contacted him last year, he told me he had never agreed to anything like that.""
Daddy pushed the document away.
"So Vanessa wanted to separate Lily from me and put her under the care of a man who hadn't even consented?""
"That's what it appears to show.""
"Why?""
Rachel looked toward me.
"I think Vanessa believed she could gain control of Lily's inheritance if she became her legal guardian. The agreement included language allowing the proposed guardian to oversee certain financial matters.""
Daddy stood and paced toward the window.
"She married me knowing about Emily's trust.""
Rachel nodded.
"Vanessa had been asking questions about the estate months before your wedding. I didn't understand why at the time.""
I felt cold.
"Did she marry Daddy because of my money?""
Rachel didn't answer immediately.
That silence told me more than words could have.
Daddy came back to the table and knelt beside me.
"Whatever her reasons were, sweetheart, none of this was your fault.""
"But she said I was expensive.""
His eyes filled with tears.
"You were never expensive. You were a little girl who needed someone to take care of her.""
I pressed my face against his shoulder.
Rachel began crying quietly.
"I'm sorry, Lily. I should have questioned her. I should have told your father what I suspected.""
Daddy looked at her.
"Why did you disappear?""
Rachel wiped her cheeks.
"Because I found evidence that Vanessa had changed the insurance beneficiary. When I confronted her, she told me that if I made accusations without proof, she would tell everyone I had stolen money from Emily's estate.""
"Did you?""
"No! I never took a penny from Emily or Lily.""
"Then why didn't you fight her?""
"Because Vanessa showed me bank records suggesting that money had been transferred into an account associated with my name. I was terrified that I would be blamed.""
Robert, who had arrived shortly before the recording played, leaned forward.
"Do you still have those records?""
Rachel nodded.
She pulled out another envelope.
Inside were bank statements showing several deposits into an account she had closed eighteen months earlier.
The transfers totaled nearly sixty thousand dollars.
Rachel had never withdrawn the money. According to the statements, it had been moved out again within days.
Robert examined the documents carefully.
"These transactions may be significant. If someone used your identity to route money through your account, we need to preserve every record.""
Rachel nodded.
"I brought everything I could find.""
Daddy's anger had not disappeared, but something else was beginning to replace it.
Understanding.
Vanessa had not simply lied about money. She had created a maze of documents, accounts, and false accusations that made innocent people afraid to speak.
And she had used that fear to keep me silent.
Robert gathered the papers.
"These documents give us several leads, but we need independent verification. The original guardianship agreement, the insurance records, and the trust transfers should all be examined together.""
Daddy agreed.
Then Rachel reached into her bag one final time.
"I found this inside Emily's old desk after she died," she said.
"I was too frightened to give it to Daniel until now.""
She placed a small folded note in front of my father.
My mother's handwriting covered the front.
For Daniel. Read this only if Vanessa refuses to leave Lily alone.
Daddy unfolded it.
He read the first line.
Then his face drained of color.
He looked at Rachel.
"Did you know about this?""
Rachel shook her head.
"No. I swear I didn't.""
Daddy turned toward me.
His voice was barely audible.
"Emily wrote that Vanessa had already tried to contact someone at Lily's school.""
Robert took the note.
He read it carefully.
Then he looked up.
"Mr. Carter, we need to contact the school immediately.""
May you like
Because according to my mother's letter, Vanessa had been trying to change my emergency contacts, my medical authorizations, and even the person permitted to collect me from school.
And the date on the letter showed that she had started doing it before she married my father.
