Chapter 14: The Woman Behind the Locked Door
I stared at the photograph until my eyes burned.
It couldn't be real.
My mother had been dead for six years.
I had watched them lower her coffin into the ground.
I had stood beside my father while people told me how brave I was.
I had slept with one of her scarves under my pillow for months because it still smelled like her perfume.
And now someone was showing me a photograph of her alive.
"Emily," Michael said gently.
I handed him the phone.
He stared at the image.
Then he whispered:
"Laura.""
Richard grabbed the phone.
His face turned completely white.
"Where did you get this?""
"Someone sent it to me.""
He looked at the timestamp.
It had been taken three days earlier.
Three days.
My mother had supposedly been dead for six years.
Eleanor immediately contacted the district attorney.
Within twenty minutes, we were in a conference room with two investigators.
They examined the photograph and confirmed that the building belonged to a company associated with Daniel Cross.
One investigator, Detective Harris, studied the image.
"Nobody goes there alone. If this photograph is authentic, we could be dealing with an unlawful confinement.""
Michael stood.
"I'm coming.""
"So am I," Richard said.
I looked at him.
"You don't get to make decisions for me anymore.""
He nodded.
"You're right. But I am going because I owe Laura the truth.""
The investigators arranged a warrant.
An hour later, we arrived at the old medical facility.
It stood behind a row of dead trees on the outskirts of Dallas.
The windows were covered with metal screens.
A faded sign hung above the entrance.
*CEDAR RIDGE RECOVERY CENTER.*
The building looked abandoned.
But a light glowed on the second floor.
Detective Harris raised his hand.
"Stay behind us.""
The front door was unlocked.
Inside, the air smelled of disinfectant and damp carpet.
A receptionist's desk stood empty.
There were fresh footprints in the dust.
We followed them down a corridor.
At the end was a locked door.
The investigator tried the handle.
Nothing.
Then Michael noticed a small nameplate.
Room 12.
He touched it.
"Laura was transferred here.""
Richard looked at him.
"How do you know?""
"Because she told me about this place years ago. She said Daniel had purchased it before you married Vanessa.""
The investigators forced the lock.
The door swung open.
The room was empty.
A narrow bed stood against the wall.
There was a chair beside the window, a small television, and a half-finished cup of tea.
Someone had been here recently.
On the bedside table was a photograph of me wearing my angel costume at age ten.
My mother had written something on the back.
*My Emily. Always my angel.*
I picked it up.
My hands shook.
"She's been here.""
Detective Harris checked the bathroom.
"There's nobody in here.""
Then Michael noticed a second door hidden behind a wardrobe.
He pulled it open.
A narrow staircase led downstairs.
We followed it into a basement.
There were several rooms.
Most were empty.
But one had a desk covered with medical records.
Another contained old security monitors.
And in the final room, we found a locked metal cabinet.
Detective Harris opened it.
Inside were dozens of patient files.
One had my mother's name.
*LAURA BENNETT — PRIVATE PATIENT RECORD.*
The first page contained a handwritten note.
Patient remains conscious. Family access restricted by order of Daniel Cross.
I covered my mouth.
The second page was dated six years earlier.
Patient requested contact with daughter. Request denied.
The third page was even worse.
Patient informed that daughter has died.
I couldn't breathe.
"They told my mother I was dead?""
Michael wrapped his arms around my shoulders.
"Emily...""
I kept reading.
For six years, my mother had been living in this facility under another name.
Her medication had been controlled.
Her visitors restricted.
Her identity erased.
And someone had convinced her that I had died.
A noise came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Detective Harris raised his weapon.
"Police! Identify yourself!""
A woman appeared at the basement entrance.
She was wearing a gray cardigan and holding a small handbag.
Her hair was silver.
Her face was thinner than I remembered.
But when she looked at me, her eyes filled with tears.
"Emily?""
My heart stopped.
I couldn't speak.
She took one step forward.
"My baby.""
I ran.
I threw my arms around her so hard that she stumbled backward.
She smelled of lavender soap and the faintest trace of the perfume I remembered from childhood.
I held her face between my hands.
"Mom?""
She nodded.
I started sobbing.
"You're alive.""
She touched my cheeks.
"I thought you were dead.""
I shook my head.
"No. No, Mom. I'm here.""
She began crying.
"They told me you had died in the hospital. They showed me a document. They said there was nothing they could do.""
I held her tighter.
"Who told you?""
Her expression changed.
"Daniel.""
Michael stepped forward.
Laura looked at him.
For a moment, neither moved.
Then she whispered:
"Michael.""
He covered his mouth.
"I never stopped looking for you.""
Laura reached for his hand.
"I know.""
Richard stood a few feet away.
He looked broken.
"Laura...""
She turned toward him.
Her eyes hardened.
"Richard.""
He started crying.
"I'm sorry.""
Laura looked at the medical records in my hands.
"You let them tell me Emily was dead.""
"I didn't know you were alive.""
"You never looked hard enough.""
He lowered his head.
Then Laura turned back to me.
"Emily, listen carefully. We don't have much time.""
"Why?""
She gripped my hands.
"Daniel knows you're here.""
Detective Harris moved toward the hallway.
"How do you know that?""
Laura looked toward the security monitors.
One of the screens suddenly flickered.
A man appeared on camera, walking through the main entrance.
Daniel Cross.
He looked directly into the security camera.
Then he smiled.
Laura began shaking.
"He's coming for the original documents.""
Michael stepped in front of her.
"Let him come.""
But Laura grabbed his arm.
"No. You don't understand.""
She looked at me.
"Daniel isn't trying to destroy the inheritance anymore.""
"Then what does he want?""
My mother swallowed.
"He's trying to destroy the evidence that proves he is your biological grandfather.""
I froze.
"What?""
Laura nodded, tears running down her face.
"Emily, Michael is your father. But Daniel is his father.""
The room went silent.
Daniel Cross wasn't just connected to my past.
He was my grandfather.
And Vanessa had married Richard to gain access to the money belonging to the granddaughter of the man who had threatened her own family.
Then the basement lights went out.
A door slammed upstairs.
May you like
And Daniel's voice echoed through the darkness.
"Hello, Laura.""
