Chapter 13: The Deal That Stole My Childhood

For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything except the pounding of my own heart.

My father had introduced Vanessa to my mother.

He had helped bring the woman who destroyed our family into our home.

And now he was telling me there had been a deal.

"What did Daniel want?"" I asked.

Richard looked at Michael.

My biological father stood near the courtroom doors, his jaw clenched.

"Tell her," Michael said.

Richard swallowed.

"Before you were born, Daniel and Vanessa were involved in a financial scheme with several people. They used fake identities to purchase properties, move money, and hide assets. Michael discovered what they were doing.""

Michael stepped forward.

"I was an accountant at the company Daniel used. I found transfers connected to stolen investment money. I reported them.""

"Then why did Vanessa marry my father?"" I asked.

Richard looked down.

"Because Daniel wanted access to Laura's family.""

I frowned.

"What did my mother have to do with this?""

"Her grandfather had established a substantial inheritance. Daniel believed he could use the family trust to cover the money he had stolen.""

Michael shook his head.

"He also wanted to silence me. When I discovered the scheme, Daniel threatened to make sure I never saw my daughter.""

I turned toward Michael.

"You knew about me?""

He nodded.

"Your mother told me she was pregnant. I wanted to marry her. But Daniel had already started threatening us.""

"Why didn't you take her away?""

"Because your mother refused to leave Richard. She believed he could protect you.""

I looked at Richard.

"How?""

He rubbed his hands together.

"I worked for Daniel's company before I met Laura. I knew how he operated. I believed I could negotiate with him.""

Michael let out a bitter laugh.

"You believed you could negotiate with a man who had already threatened a pregnant woman?""

Richard didn't defend himself.

He continued.

"Daniel offered me a deal. If I helped him get close to Laura's family, he would leave Michael alone and make sure you were never targeted.""

I felt sick.

"So you introduced Vanessa to my mother?""

"Yes.""

"Knowing who she was?""

"Yes.""

My voice became a whisper.

"You brought her into our house.""

Richard nodded.

"I thought I could control the situation.""

Michael stepped closer.

"You didn't control anything. You gave Daniel a way inside.""

Richard's eyes filled.

"I know.""

I wanted to hate him.

Part of me already did.

But I also remembered him teaching me to ride a bicycle, holding my hand during thunderstorms, and carrying me on his shoulders at the state fair.

Those memories suddenly felt like photographs of someone else's childhood.

"What did the deal require?"" I asked.

Richard hesitated.

"Daniel wanted you.""

I stepped backward.

"What?""

"Not physically. He wanted legal control over your inheritance and access to the trust. He believed that because you were a minor, he could eventually become your financial guardian.""

"Why me?""

Michael answered.

"Because your mother had named you as the sole beneficiary. Daniel couldn't take the money while she was alive.""

"And Vanessa?""

"She was supposed to marry Richard, gain the family's trust, and arrange the transfer.""

I looked at the courtroom door through which Vanessa had disappeared.

"Then why did my mother allow the marriage?""

Richard's answer was barely audible.

"Because Daniel threatened to expose Michael's location and accuse him of kidnapping you.""

Michael closed his eyes.

"Laura was trying to protect both of us.""

I remembered the final line of my mother's letter.

The person who helped Vanessa enter our family was not Daniel. It was someone much closer to us.

She had been talking about Richard.

I sat down.

"Did Mom know you had made the deal?""

Richard nodded.

"She found out three weeks before she fell down the stairs. She confronted me. I told her I would end everything.""

"But you didn't.""

"No.""

"Why?""

He looked at me.

"Because Daniel showed me a photograph of you outside school. He knew your schedule. He knew where you went every afternoon.""

My stomach twisted.

"Did he follow me?""

"I believe so.""

Michael moved closer.

"Emily, that's why your mother kept me away. She thought Daniel would stop if he believed I had disappeared.""

"Did he?""

"No.""

I stared at the floor.

For seventeen years, I had believed my family had fallen apart because my mother died.

Now I understood that someone had been arranging the pieces long before she was gone.

A courthouse employee approached Eleanor and handed her an envelope.

She examined the seal.

"Emily, this came from the district attorney's office.""

Inside was a notice confirming that Vanessa had been arrested on charges relating to forgery, insurance fraud, and attempted financial exploitation.

But there was another document.

A search warrant for Daniel Cross's property.

Eleanor read it twice.

"There's something else. Daniel is being investigated for the disappearance of Margaret Hale.""

Michael stiffened.

"Margaret is alive. She testified today.""

"Yes," Eleanor replied.

"But the warrant concerns an earlier incident involving another person.""

She turned the page.

The missing person was listed as:

*Laura Bennett.*

I frowned.

"But my mother died in the hospital.""

Eleanor shook her head.

"The authorities have found evidence that Laura's death certificate may contain false information about her final hours.""

Richard stood.

"What are you saying?""

Eleanor looked at him.

"The hospital recorded a time of death that doesn't match the original emergency report.""

Michael grabbed the document.

"How different?""

"Eleven hours.""

The room went silent.

I looked at the date.

The date my mother supposedly died.

Then I noticed the time.

According to the emergency report, Laura had been transferred out of Room 314 eleven hours before her official death.

"Where was she taken?"" I asked.

Eleanor turned another page.

There was a handwritten destination.

A private medical facility outside Dallas.

And beside the transfer authorization was a name.

*MARGARET HALE.*

Michael stared at the document.

"Laura might have been alive when they moved her.""

My knees nearly gave way.

"Where is that facility?""

Eleanor checked the address.

"It's closed now.""

Thomas took the paper.

He recognized the name immediately.

"That's not possible.""

"What?"" I asked.

He pointed to the address.

"That's the property Daniel bought under his second identity.""

My phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

There was no greeting.

Just one sentence.

*Emily, if you want to know what happened to your mother, come to the old facility. Come before Daniel destroys what's left.*

Then a second message arrived.

A photograph.

A hospital room.

A woman sitting beside a window.

Her hair was gray.

Her face was thinner.

But I recognized the silver necklace.

May you like

And I recognized the woman wearing it.

My mother.
