Chapter 12: The Witness Vanessa Thought Was Dead

Vanessa stood so quickly that her chair fell backward.

"She's not supposed to be here!""

The judge struck his gavel.

"Mrs. Bennett, sit down.""

Margaret walked toward the witness stand.

Her hands were trembling, but her voice was steady.

"I apologize for the interruption, Your Honor. I have been avoiding public appearances because I received threats against my family.""

Eleanor approached her.

"Ms. Hale, are you willing to testify under oath?""

"Yes.""

Gregory stood.

"Your Honor, this woman has no verified connection to the matter before the court.""

Margaret opened her folder.

"I have six years of hospital records, internal emails, medication logs, and a copy of the original patient transfer request.""

The judge looked at Gregory.

"Let her speak.""

Margaret took the oath.

Eleanor began carefully.

"Ms. Hale, did you work at Dallas Memorial Hospital six years ago?""

"Yes. I was director of patient services.""

"Were you familiar with Laura Bennett?""

"Very familiar. She was admitted after a fall at her home.""

"Was she conscious when she arrived?""

"Yes.""

"Did she tell you how she had fallen?""

Margaret nodded.

"She said a woman had pushed her.""

The courtroom became completely silent.

Eleanor continued.

"Did she identify that woman?""

Margaret looked directly at Vanessa.

"Yes. She identified Vanessa Bennett.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"That's a lie.""

The judge raised his hand.

"Mrs. Bennett, one more interruption and you will be removed.""

Margaret continued.

"Laura was frightened. She believed Vanessa had been trying to steal her daughter's inheritance. She asked me to contact Michael Carter.""

Michael lowered his head.

I reached for his hand.

Eleanor placed a document on the screen.

"Can you identify this?""

Margaret examined it.

"Yes. That's the original medication authorization.""

"And whose signature is on it?""

Margaret pointed.

"Daniel Cross.""

A wave of whispers moved through the courtroom.

Richard stood.

"What?""

Margaret turned toward him.

"Mr. Bennett, your signature was forged. The original form was signed by Daniel Cross using a physician's credentials that had already been deactivated.""

I stared at Vanessa.

Her face was rigid.

Eleanor continued.

"Was Dr. Samuel Whitmore alive when this authorization was submitted?""

"No. He had been dead for two years.""

"Then how was his identity used?""

"Someone accessed his old hospital account.""

"Who had access?""

Margaret opened another file.

"Three people. Daniel Cross, Gregory Shaw, and Vanessa Bennett.""

Gregory immediately objected.

"This is outrageous.""

The judge leaned forward.

"Mr. Shaw, sit down.""

Margaret produced another document.

It was an internal hospital email.

The subject line read:

*ROOM 314 TRANSFER — URGENT.*

The message instructed staff to move Laura into a room with restricted visitor access.

The sender was Vanessa.

The recipient was the hospital's chief financial officer.

Eleanor displayed it.

"Why was Laura moved?""

"Because she had requested to speak with an investigator. Vanessa wanted to prevent her from meeting anyone without supervision.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"Was my mother aware?""

Margaret looked at me.

"Yes, Emily. She knew something was wrong.""

Tears filled her eyes.

"She asked me to get you out of the hospital before Vanessa could reach you.""

I remembered the photograph.

Me sitting outside Room 314.

Margaret holding an envelope.

"Did you give me something that night?"" I asked.

Margaret nodded.

"Yes.""

"What?""

"A small envelope. Your mother had written your name on it.""

I stood up.

"Where is it?""

Margaret looked toward Vanessa.

"Vanessa took it.""

Vanessa suddenly slammed her hand on the table.

"That's enough!""

The judge ordered her to sit.

But Margaret wasn't finished.

She removed a second envelope from her folder.

"This is a copy of the letter Laura wrote before she died.""

Eleanor accepted it.

The letter was addressed to me.

I recognized my mother's handwriting immediately.

The judge allowed it to be read aloud.

My darling Emily,

If you're hearing this, I may not be able to come home.

I need you to know that your father is not the man you think he is, but neither is the man who has been raising you.

I looked at Richard.

His eyes filled with tears.

Eleanor continued.

Michael is your biological father. Richard loves you, but he made a terrible mistake. He signed documents that allowed Vanessa to gain access to our financial records. He believed he was protecting us.

I don't know whether he understood what he was signing.

But I know this: the money Vanessa wants was never meant for her. It was meant to give you a life where no one could control you.

I covered my mouth.

The letter continued.

There is one more thing you must know.

The person who helped Vanessa enter our family was not Daniel.

It was someone much closer to us.

Eleanor stopped reading.

The next page was missing.

"Where's the rest?"" I whispered.

Margaret shook her head.

"Vanessa took it from the hospital.""

Eleanor turned toward the judge.

"Your Honor, we request that this testimony and these documents be entered into the record. We also request that the guardianship petition be dismissed.""

Gregory stood.

"Objection. The witness is making allegations unrelated to the minor's current capacity.""

The judge studied the documents.

"I am not prepared to dismiss this matter without reviewing the evidence. However, I see serious concerns about the authenticity of the submitted psychological evaluation.""

He looked toward Vanessa.

"Mrs. Bennett, do you recognize this document?""

She stared at the screen.

It was the email she had sent to Daniel.

The one Brielle had found.

*THE GIRL'S EIGHTEENTH BIRTHDAY.*

Gregory whispered something to her.

Vanessa didn't respond.

Then the courtroom doors opened again.

Two uniformed officers entered.

One approached the judge and handed him a sealed document.

The judge read it.

His expression changed.

"Mrs. Bennett, please remain seated.""

Vanessa slowly stood.

"What is this?""

The officer answered.

"We have a warrant for your arrest.""

Vanessa looked at Richard.

Then at Brielle.

Then finally at me.

"You think you've won?"" she whispered.

I said nothing.

She turned toward the officer.

"You don't understand. If I go down, everyone goes down.""

The officer reached for her wrists.

She suddenly shouted:

"Ask Richard who really introduced me to Daniel! Ask him who arranged the wedding! Ask him why Laura agreed to marry him in the first place!""

Richard stood.

"Vanessa, stop!""

But she was already being handcuffed.

As the officers led her toward the exit, she turned one last time.

"Emily, your mother didn't marry Richard because she loved him.""

I felt my blood run cold.

Vanessa smiled.

"She married him because he promised to keep you safe from your real family.""

The courtroom doors closed behind her.

Nobody spoke.

Then Margaret approached me.

She placed a small photograph in my hand.

It showed my mother standing beside Richard, Vanessa, and another man at a restaurant.

The photograph was dated three months before Vanessa married my father.

On the back, my mother had written:

*The night Richard agreed to bring Vanessa into our home.*

I looked at Richard.

He was crying.

"Tell me the truth," I whispered.

He took a shaky breath.

Then he finally revealed the secret my mother had tried to hide.

"Emily, Vanessa didn't meet me by accident. I introduced her to Laura.""

I stared at him.

"Why?""

He closed his eyes.

"Because six years earlier, I had made a deal with Daniel Cross.""

My hands began to shake.

"What kind of deal?""

Richard looked directly at me.

"The deal that was supposed to keep you alive.""

May you like

And then he told me what the agreement actually required.

*My mother had to surrender custody of me before my eighteenth birthday—or Daniel would reveal why I had been hidden from him in the first place.*
